Yes, I know violence happens in all parts of the world. This just serves as another reminder to be aware of your surroundings and remain proactive regarding personal safety.

All of us island-residents were at least as pi**ed-off as you guys

when we heard this awful news.

Our local Police force is buzzing, having had the ants nest stirred up! :D

The easiest bit of simple advice I can give is..

All you guys need to do is to leave your 'Bling' on board

in your cabin safe!

Two held for shooting of British tourists

Tue, March 19, 2013 - 7:51 AM

Police have two men in custody for the shooting of two British visitors on Sunday.

The visitors Philip and Ann Prior, 72-years-old and 59-years-old respectively,

were shot in Hincks Street, (Bridgetown) St Michael.

They were taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment.

Police public relations officer Inspect David Welch this morning said the tourists were robbed of a hand bag.

Not surprising: I didn't think it would take long to get results.

Islanders talk (gossip)

and that renders many a Police lead in their investigations!

Great advice! Pretty much the only jewelry I wear "off the ship" is a cheap watch (set to ship's time, of course).

I had not heard about this unfortunate incident when we sailed to Barbados on Equinox, earlier this month. Reading about it makes me glad that we decided to spend our day sailing with Silvermoon cats. The biggest danger there was falling overboard and being eaten by a giant turtle! ;)

Is it safe to take a taxi to the Hilton ? We plan to use the hotel facilities for the day. And, no, I don't wear ANY jewelry when I'm off the ship. I know that fake can look like real to someone who wants it.

You will be quite safe taking a taxi to the Hilton.

Yes, it is safe to do so.

We have done this a couple of times including this past March.

We walk along the main road from the Cruise Ship terminal into town. It's pretty to walk on the side near the water.

As you make your way into town eventually you turn left and the Synagogue is close by.

Do you feel it is safe to go visit the old synagogue in town if we are coming from the ship port?
If it were me, I'd simply take a taxi directly to the Synagogue

(now beautifully restored, over the last 20-30 yrs.)

Tell your driver you want to be put down in Synagogue Lane

where the main entrance is right before you..

..and when I was done with the Synagogue and its Museum

I'd ask someone "Which way to BROAD STREET,please?"

and have them point out which direction.

Broad Street is our main shopping drag,

and it's no more than two blocks away from the Synagogue in the correct direction!! :)

We've visited the Synagogue (and its very interesting cemetary) a number of times. We've walked back from there a couple of times. It's not a bad walk, and we've never felt unsafe.

Frightening indeed, I hope they recover quickly.

It would certainly be nice to hear how this ended and the recovery.

Seems these things are reported and we never find out "the end of the story".

Maybe someone knows. ????

Philip and Ann Prior not deterred by Barbados shooting

Philip and Ann Prior were shot during a robbery in Barbados

A couple who were shot in Barbados during a round-the-world cruise are back home and say they would be happy to revisit the Caribbean island.

Philip and Ann Prior, from Bedfield, Suffolk, were attacked in Bridgetown as they returned to the P&O ship from a sightseeing trip.

Mr Prior, who still has a bullet in his leg, said they were "very, very happy" to be home.

"I don't think it will put us off travelling," he said.

Mr Prior, 72, was shot in the groin and Mrs Prior, 59, in her right leg.

The couple were treated in hospital following the attack, where Mrs Prior's bag was stolen, before they rejoined the ship to continue with the cruise.

"There were a couple of places we didn't get to see," Mr Prior said. "I rather would have liked to have seen Virgin Gorda."

Mrs Prior, who said the couple had taken "every precaution" to avoid being robbed, is determined the experience will not deter them from future travels.

"I want to go back," she said. "Unfinished business, as it were."

The couple said they had written an open letter of thanks to a Barbados newspaper.

Mr Prior said: "There are a number of people who were so kind and attentive that you feel you'd love to go back and shake them by the hand in happier circumstances.”

Two men from St Philip, Barbados, have been charged in connection with the robbery and remanded in custody.

A sad story with a happy ending... :)

While I am not one to ignore danger or warnings of danger, I am perplexed why this thread is popping up 17 months after the incident. The criminals who did this were caught, so unless there have been other similar crimes, don't get carried away or let yourself be deterred from enjoying your time in port....wherever. It should be obvious not to flash jewelry, expensive cell phones or cameras, or a lot of cash whether in the Caribbean or Europe or the US.
