Guaranteed room

Has anyone ever gotten a crappy room by doing this? I’m booked on Paradise and the only option for a balcony was a guaranteed room.

We've done it once - inside guarantee. We ended up in a handicap room on Lido and were thrilled with it.

I’ve seen it both ways. I am extremely picky about my cabin and wouldn’t take the chance.

I just about always book guarantees and yep, have gotten a few "crappy" rooms. The "cheap" fares are my priority so it is insignificant in my case where the cabin is.

It would depend on what you consider "crappy." You could get a balcony room with a partially obstructed view or something like that. Or one that is not "exactly" where you want it to be on the ship.

We have in the past, a couple times, booked guaranteed rooms because we were going for the best rate. While we generally like to know where our room is and make a choice based on our experience about our consideration for what makes a good room, we are willing to take the gamble if we are doing what we call "a down and dirty" cruise. Meaning we are just happy to get away and any day on a cruise ship is better than a bad day at work.

We have been lucky and the couple times we have done it, we ended up with a room that we would have likely chosen, usually on a higher deck and in a decent location - all for a great rate.

You just don't know what you might get, so you have to be prepared to accept whatever it is.

I guess any room is better than being at work. I just hate to get something with an obstructed view since there wasn’t an option for me to choose rooms.

Something sounds wrong about this. If they don't have an available balcony, how would they have a balcony to guarentee? Are they expecting one or more balcony cancelations? If not, since they don't book below the level guarenteed, sounds like if there are no balcony cancelations, you are getting a suite.

That is always possible too. You are guaranteed a cabin in your class - or higher! You COULD maybe end up with a way better room too.

We have only booked a guarantee balcony once on Britannia and were allocated a cabin right at the back of the ship so had a view of the wake as we travelled only down side was it was floor above the night club and it was a late night venue. Put up with it the first night but second night by 1 am rang down to ask if anything could be done to turn it down. After two attempts by P&O to turn down the bass and by 2 am we were extremely fed up they said they would move us to another cabin the following day. The staff were excellent and helped us move so when we reboarded the following day we had very little to unpack. We have never booked a guarantee again but do have friends who have booked several and been very lucky.

If you are particular or picky about where you are on the ship or have a favorite side or deck then choose your own. I take great strides and care to choose our cabins and we have our favorites spots, I would not be able to stand not knowing that for our week on board someone else choose my families space.

Yes it happened to me and I learned my lesson well, ended up under the galley and in the middle of the night heard pots and pans falling, dishes breaking, carts rolling and the cabin for some reason was warmer, but tried it again a few years ago to end up having a handicap cabin that got flooded in the bathroom overtime we used the shower, because they don't have the step in the shower. I Know others who ended up under lounge chairs near the pool, under casino they claimed they heard footsteps, close to jacuzzi's and ended up getting a joining room of course the door is closed but it means if your neighbors are a bit loud or use the tv you have a higher chance of hearing it all.

You are talking about a Junior Suite (JS) guarantee?? They have obstructed ones.

The Paradise has no standard balcony cabins.

I just came back on a cruise with a guaranteed room. My room was first flior, all the way in the back. Very noisy and a long walk to the theatre, short walk to go up the elevator to lido. Did I say noisy? Very noisy......still a great cruise!

We have purchased a guaranteed stateroom on three cruises. Each time we had no problems with the staterooms or locations. On the Paradise, a Fantasy class ship, if my memory is correct all balcony staterooms (I think suites) are on the Upper and Verandah desks so you should not have a problem with a "bad" stateroom (suite) unless you don't want to be on a high deck and forward which would be the Verandah deck. The Upper deck balconies are about on the center line of the ship.

The only option is guaranteed. These are balconies that will be retro fitted in dry dock.

I wonder if once it’s out of dry dock will the have the option to choose a balcony? Anyone have experience with that?

I have booked a GTY well over a dozen times. Many times I got much more than I paid for even into the next class, other times I ended up in a cabin in line with my bargain fare. Just be happy you are on a cruise and be willing to be satisfied with whatever you get.
