NCL Smoking Ban

For all of the non-smokers that are so gleeful about banning smoking on the balconies (potentially) you need to look a little further ahead as to what the results will most likely be.

Ships like the Breakaway, Epic, and Getaway were designed and built to have the casinos be an area where people almost need to go through whether they want to be in the casino or not. (intentional as a cash generator) They were also done on the cheap as there could have been much better segregation and venting of the smoking sections from the non-smoking sections. People complain (rightfully so in my opinion) that the smell and smoke is not only confined to the casinos themselves but also into other surrounding restaurants and other public areas. Well it seems to me that this new (again potential) policy is going to make that problem a whole lot worse. You are kidding yourselves if you think they will ban smoking in the casinos any time soon. So prepare yourselves for a lot more smell and second hand smoke while you are anywhere near those areas of the ship.

Well here is an idea. Due to the poor layout of the casino how about Ncl makes the epic breakaway and getaway the 3 flagship non smoking ships!!!!

Oh wait prices and demand will skyrocket on those ships. Lol

Looking sooo forward to smoking on my 09/27 Getaway Cruise, & then on Royal Caribbean and MSC ships for all future cruises!!!

Did Royal start permitting smoking on balconies again? They had stopped it as of January .

Oh no. We are booked on the Getaway starts November 1st. Does this include that cruise as no smoking? I don't smoke but a few do on our group and I told them smoking is allowed on the balconies.

Does this apply to European/Asian cruises also ? Fleet wide ? All Ports ??

I smell conflict ..;)

Good question. I'll be interested to see how that is addressed in the expected announcement. May be tough to fill the balcony cabins on the European and South American itineraries if the balcony ban applies.

No drama here, just disappointment. We booked a cruise with NCL just to accommodate my husband who smokes. We had an aft balcony and were super excited. I called to check on this rumor and was told it will be banned everywhere but the casino, and that you will have to be actually gambling there to be there.

Just called NCL myself and yep, its true. No smoking on balconies and they're going to 'limit' the areas you can smoke in at the casino, on Epic, Breakaway and Getaway, is what the Rep told me. She said they've been getting a lot of complaints from guests about the smoke smell coming from the casino on the Epic, Breakaway and Getaway, so on these ships they'll be limited smoking areas in the casinos. She also said there will be more designated smoking areas in the Waterfront, starboard side of the ship, on Breakaway and Getaway.

VERY glad to hear this. Smoking sets off my asthma, and it always makes me sad when I could not use my balcony because someone upwind of me decided it was time to smoke.

I'll be glad to avoid the starboard side of the Waterfront if it means that I can walk down 678 without having to dodge smoke... or worse, take my rescue inhaler after arriving at the MDR or theater. I'm hoping that part of this means they are renovating the Casino to have some sort of air control and filtering system to keep the smoke contained to the smoking areas.

I have some sympathy for smokers -- it's a physical addition and hard to kick. But I'm also pretty darn addicted to breathing and don't care to stop, especially because I'm having an asthma attack brought on by someone else's smoke.

I can't image that to be true with banning everywhere but the casino. But guess we will see Wednesday. I can't imagine them having only the casino and what about the cigar lounge? Or enclosed areas on deck? If we can still smoke in the cigar lounge I'll just change my room to deck 8 nearby.

We just changed our Carnival cruise to NCL after Carnival banned smoking. We have a Med cruise booked with HAL in August that I hope will remain "safe". Looks like we will be cancelling our NCL cruise come Wednesday, then only sail with HAL. If they ban balcony smoking, we're back to land cruising, which we enjoyed before we got hooked on cruising the past few years. We generally book suites and buy lots of wine. I hope they all go broke!!!

Amen!

Looks like HAL will be close behind in changing their policy as well.

If the cruise lines thought they would go broke, they wouldn't make the decision. ;)

Why is everyone going crazy and canceling already? I have no intention on canceling. I'll deal with it. However if they do ban smoking everywhere but the casino then i don't know about cruising after my next one in November but if there are still other places like the cigar lounge or other outside places no big deal for me. I always stay at Marriott hotels and they are smoke free so I go outside. So I can deal with it. if they limit it to the casino now that's another story. Even I who does smoke think it's already to smokey in there they will create real havoc If that's what they end up doing.

Not surprised that it will probably become an "even playing field" for the cruise lines with similar smoking policies. They'll continue to make money since it remains one of the most reasonably priced vacations. All inclusive.

What all inclusives still allow smoking?

I'll be calling in the morning to cancel my cruise. Hope they can get me a land vacation so I don't have to pay the cancellation fee.

Where do you think you can smoke with a land vacation? It won't be in your room or on your balcony or patio. It won't be at the pool, bars or restaurant.

If smoker's love to cruise, I don't understand why they just don't go to the designated areas on the ship. They would have to do the same with any other vacation. Why stop cruising altogether? That is beyond me.

What a "hold" this addiction has on day to day life. So sad.

Probably going to cancel 2 cruises to the tune of $16,000. There are many all inclusives which allow smoking and have casinos..we will save a fortune not going back to my jeweler in St. Maarten 3 times a year..lol

Almost all of the AI resorts still allow smoking and then there will be the new Baha Mar opening in Cable Beach in a few months . Can't wait to go there. Yes I know we can get along without smoking on the Balcony, but we also don't have to if we can go elsewhere. It is a lot of lost money for NCL and I know they don't care but we have spent over $60,000 in the last 3 years at least. I am sure some heathy non smioker will make that up for them. Except they will not tolerate the casino. On well ..life goes on and I do have my daughters wedding to plan this year. Safe sailing everyone .

Atkantis, Hard Roxk, Punta Cana, most St, Marteen hotels, and Dubrivnik lol since we just returned from there all are ver accomadating if you smoke on your balcony. It is sad but we will manage. I love to crusie but I just love to travel so I am sure we will all be fine,

There are many countries where smoking doesn't have the stigma that it does in the U.S. There are also many areas in the States that aren't smoking-phobic yet. The South is still quite accepting of smokers. Don't you worry your pretty little heads about us, we'll be just fine :)

It does kind of suck though that the popcorn got cold waiting for the show, doesn't it?

Well, the odds of my wife quitting smoking before our planned 2015 cruise is somewhere between slim and none. And the odds of me booking that cruise and knowing she'll be miserable are absolutely zero. I'm very sad tonight.

Few if any are afraid of smokers. I think most people just don't want to breath in their cancer is all. I can promise you that few are worrying about you. :p

I'm just gonna put it out there and say, with all the cruises I have been on I have hardly seen balconies with people on them. I said to myself many times why do people pay for a balcony when they don't use them. Yes they come out for a few minutes when we dock or getting close to land. Between showering, eating breakfast, spending time at the pool or taking off as soon as the ship docks, having dinner and then seeing shows at night. When do you have time to notice people smoking on a balcony? Sorry I am really upset because my husband want to cancel our cruise, and I agree. Gotta go and look for a trip either to cancun or Aruba where we are not treated like we have a dreaded disease
