NCL Smoking Ban

My Dh and I and the people we travel with are all smokers. Will we cancel because of the change? No. We have not been able to smoke in public places, most bars, hotel balconies etc...for years. We do enjoy a cig with a cup of coffee in the morning but enjoy vacations and cruising more. We don't smoke in our cars or our house, only outdoors. This just might be the motivation we need to follow through on our plans to quit smoking altogether:)

This September will be our last cruise. I was thinking of giving up cruising anyway, and this will just reinforce that idea. I have been cruising since the late 80's and always enjoyed it. Lately, the lackluster entertainment, combined with the downgraded food, service are also factors. I am also tired of going to the same old ports.

Last year we went on a tour of costa Rica and had just as much fun. I am going to start looking at tours and all inclusives. The prices are usually about the same.

Well, I must say....the smokers and nonsmokers of NCL patrons are not attacking each other on this thread.

If you read the Carnival threads (and there are MANY), everyone is soooo mean to each other.

Oh, just wait. This is just getting started.

If this is indeed true, the anti smoking zealots are going to be so "in your face neener neener neener" that it WILL get very ugly around here. But, the moderators will allow the zealots to get their shots in before locking the thread rather than deleting them. But, they will delete a few posts from zealots opponents before locking. ;)

Yes tours and AIs are wonderful

I wonder if anyone will be able to find a bus tour of say Europe that will allow smoking?

I hear AIs in st Marteen allow smoking too

My point is that it is not just cruises that are limiting smoking. It is everywhere.

Even in Italy not one restaurant we frequented had smokers

Ok we were in tourist areas and the aces had both outdoor and indoor seating but nope not a smokers to be found not even on a Saturday night in July 50 yards from the Pantheon

And trust me there were all nationalities all around and from some smokers haven countries too

But nope no smoking. No issues.

Starting cruises after 11/1/14 no smoking except in the casino

Awesome. This news couldn't make me happier. My favorite cruise line, NCL, and my second favorite, CCL, are now that much better to me (not that I book many balconies). Now Breakaway has to institute a better smoke extraction system for the Atrium.

I think that it's very interesting to see so many reactions from smokers. I know that lots of people in southern Europe and South America smoke but I'm surprised that so many Americans smoke too!!

I have really thought about it and I can say that I don't even know a smoker! I don't know anyone who smoke! None of my friends or relatives smoke so noone I know should be affected if smoking was banned.

I don't say anything bad about smokers or non-smokers so don't accuse me of that, please! (I know what can happen in a thread like this...)

A well reasoned, thoughtful response. But remember that many of the hotels on tours will be non smoking, so you may be hanging around in some parking lots.

I suggested a few post back that NCL make the Breakaway its flagship non smoking vessel 100%

It is huge there is an enormous amount of non smokers that cruise and I bet it would be a very popular ship

of course the demand would be high so the prices would rise ( am already booked KSF) thus making way for the Getaway to join in as another non smoking vessel....the Epic etc

I start with BA because of the casino issue. Plus that is the one I am sailing next! LOL

Now for those that will say it won't work....ummmm not so..this is 2014 and the tide is toward banning smoking that certainly needs no explanation. Just think of all the things you said 20 years ago would never happen in your lifetime? It's mind numbing how things have changed. No explanation needed there either unless you have been living under a rock.

for those that will now drag up the Carnival Paradise all I can say is that was ancient history and it was the wrong time for it.

Not any longer.

Now....to all the NCL admistrative assistants that read and analyze these boards for the execs......Let's just do it!!!!!!

BTW...Thank you in advance for your prompt attention to this matter..:)

I don't think most smokers understand how important it is to non-smokers to have air not polluted with smoke.

As a non-smoker, I couldn't care less. Maybe you meant to say "how important it is to SOME non-smokers." Smoke doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Just shared the news with my husband that smokes and he didn't even flinch. He said he would just go to the smoking areas when he wanted to smoke. He did sat he hoped the cigar lounge will still be there though.

'Zealotry' depends on one's perspective I suppose.

From our viewpoint, not wishing to have our nostrils/eyes/clothing assaulted/permeated by pungent odors is reasonable almost to the extreme. ;)

Then you'll also want to stay away from the fish items at the buffet. :)

Guess Kevin didn't want to rename the Breakaway the Smokeaway... All I can say is Bravo!!! On our first sailing on her, there were times the casino was foggier than a Cher concert. I'd rather Norwegian not become a smokers haven, and the execs fix this problem. BW is our favorite ship, and the pollution will ruin her.

And it still hasn't been made official yet. This could all be smoke and mirrors. I'll wait until tomorrow.

I believe more than one poster confirmed it with NCL although I don't know if exact details were confirmed but something about limiting the smoking in the casino as well

Just spoke to my PCC in CAS he said he has not heard a thing about it yet. Which doesn't mean it's not happening. I smoke and I'm booked for November 30th. Will I cancel noooooo way. I just changed my cabin to deck 8 near the waterfront near the cigar lounge so all I have to do is walk a few steps to have my morning smoke with my coffee. I do know some people said it's only going to be smoking In the casino but I doubt they will not allow smoking in other areas i.e. The cigar lounge. Problem solved.

Same with me I can't imagine they take away the cigar lounge.

We did a cruise on the Epic in May 2011, and back then they did indeed have a smaller part of the casino as smoking-section (around the bar, plus around the slot machines). We then did another Epic cruise in August 2013, and the smoking-policy in the casino had changed to almost the opposite. At least last year (2013), you were only allowed to smoke WHILE PLAYING on any of the tables - if you were not playing at a table you could not smoke at all in the casino. That of course was kind of "self-conflicting" - because there were smokers at most of the tables, so the only real "non-smoking" section of the casino was around the slot machines.

That is very cool. I did not know that.

My ignore feature will be used a lot the next few days, just as it has been the last week, though most are already gone & I can't say I will sorry to see them go.

I called corporate this morning and I spoke to a supervisor who was messaging someone else. They have NO information on a ban of smoking on balconies.

No drama here, just disappointment. We booked a cruise with NCL just to accommodate my husband who smokes. We had an aft balcony and were super excited. I called to check on this rumor and was told it will be banned everywhere but the casino, and that you will have to be actually gambling there to be there.

Guess we are done cruising after our September Gem cruise for the same reason, my husband is a smoker. We absolutely love the Haven, which make NCL our line of choice. Very sad.

I am a non-smoker and I would much rather have the smoke outside than in. I hate walking anywhere near the casino.

Sorry, but that does not prove or confirm if there is or is not any change. And even if there was a change, they surely would not have the details.

It will be announced when it is announced.
