NCL Smoking Ban

Just spring for an interior as you will now hardly ever be in your room

Probably will.

We have one booked on the Getaway for May, finally talked 5 of our couple friends into joining us on a cruise, it will the first for all. We have 6 balcony rooms side by side and at least one of each couple is a smoker. It will be fun breaking the news, they will all probably want to cancel or switch to interior.

So if the real driving force behind the ban is regulation and the cost of retrofitting, does that hold out hope that new builds may have the sort of equipment that will make it safer for a portion of some ships to permit balcony smoking?

I can't imagine them spending that kind of money on something like that. Maybe 30 years ago when many more people smoked ...

The E-cig. I have contains NO NICOTINE...Just water vapor and certainly no smell. It is a cartridge and no fluid is required.................No way anyone could even think they smell anything -- nothing to smell AND is not harmful....Get your facts straight..............sail on HAL....

That would be great, if everyone used the type of e-cigarette you use, but unfortunately they don't. I was run away from a slot machine in Las Vegas because this young lady sat down and puffed away with this horrid sicken smell coming from her e-cigarette.

BTW I was all for e-cigarettes until I encountered this young lady and the putrid smell.

I doubt it as what they would have to do is very expensive whether retro-fitting or new build

No one knows either way. Many do contain nicotine and a lot in a very hazardous form, that is an undeniable fact.

Actually yes they do. Even in the current we wanna find fault in them FDA studies they have shown that e-cigs are much less harmful to both vaper and bystanders then smoking a real cigarette

That is an interesting point, I would have to think that the cost of such equipment as part of an existing build out would not be as difficult or as costly as a refit to current ships. I suppose it would be a matter of cost benefit analysis, if there was a demand for or against it on the new ships. Any line could do this from that point of view, most have new ships on order of one type or another. Though that would mean different smoking policies for different ships, I wonder if cruise lines would be reluctant to have different policies on different ships, though I suppose some do for different itineraries.

On the Dawn, in January, the cigar lounge was essentially unusable due o the amount of cigarette smoke.

Now, that is hilarious!:D Didn't know cigar smokers don't want to smell cigarette smoke!

We are non-smokers and really find either unpleasant. Our last cruise was the first time we had smokers are both sides of us, and boy howdy, did they smoke their 'butts' off!

I'm not sure that's how it's gonna pan out that only active players can smoke. I gamble every day the casino is open so that would not effect me. But what would effect me is if they make most of it non smoking. If the machines I like are in a smoking section and I can get to play it I'm good to go. What I'm worried about is there will be someone sitting at a machine and playing a penny at a time just to smoke and really have no interest in playing.

I'm with you. If someone is sitting down playing one cent a spin and the machines are full, I guess I can spend my gambling money in Las Vegas.

Actually I think it would be 9 cents a spin...Funnily enough I do that when I want to gamble as I hate slot machines and don't wanna spin the big bucks LOL

The more the merrier.

No more girl talk sitting in the GV smoking :( and having a fun time

So have it in the casino, or the cigar bar if you are lucky enough to have one. I will figure it out. I would figure it out on Carnival as well. They just won't get my money for a balcony as I wouldn't use it often enough to justify the expense

Well, I must say....the smokers and nonsmokers of NCL patrons are not attacking each other on this thread.

If you read the Carnival threads (and there are MANY), everyone is soooo mean to each other.

NCL has just granted me another reason to quit.

Good luck with it I quit for the Bicentennial in 1976 with cigarettes a minimum of 10.50 a pack in NYC or roughly 3800 a year i can either smoke a pack a day or take 3 nice vacations beleive me i enjoy a cruise or a week in HI a lot more than smoking

Just wondering if the cruise lines would consider something like the back 20 percent of one side of the ship for smoking balconies? If 20% of Americans smoke and 27% of Europeans smoke then there are going to be smokers on any given ship. Perhaps they could charge extra for those cabins and then leave the end of non smoking section empty, so one vertical row empty. If people really wanted to smoke they would probably gladly pay the extra. The cruise line could even sell the buffer cabins at a discount for non smokers who care less if their neighbors lights up on their balcony. That way the ship sails full and the only area left to complain about is the casino.

If a smoking on the balconies ban is truly is about the comfort of the majority of the passengers then smoking would not be allowed indoors. A non smoking balcony rule but smoking ok in the casino public indoor space policy sounds to me like a rule that says you can drink and drive as long as it's only three miles from home.

Some people will go into a casino and the smoke won't bother them much. There are a few who are allergic to smoke and I understand their position, I am not one of them. I however can't be in an enclosed area with the eciggs. I find it hard to breathe around those things. Out in the open have at it and smoke wherever and whatever you want. Smoking out in the open is so much less offensive to me than an enclosed area indoors. Signed, kim in Washington state.... where it's legal to smoke weed but light up a cigeratte or puff an ecig and the angry mobs may just tear you to shreds.

I quit when a pack was 50 cents. I smoked 3 packs a day, but I never saved the money for anything good...it went to my other vice, food LOL!

Well, setting aside smoking balconies is often discussed. However, if the true reason NCL is doing this is the new insurance restrictions mentioned a while back (and if that is correct, then my bet that is the real reason for this) then the expense to make the balconies compliant would be very expensive and I doubt that NCL would spend big bucks to make some balconies available for smoking.

Until it costs them big money, I doubt they will change their policy in the casino. They are a corporation looking at their bottom line.

"Anyways, as you've already heard, the rumors are true. She did tell me that in the Casino they will be limiting the smoking section AND limit smoking to people who are actively playing... which I assume would mean that the Casinos will be non-smoking while in port? (I didn't clarify, sorry - only thought of that after I'd hung up)"

I cant imagine them even enforcing this rule, they cant even enforce the chair issue on the pool deck !!!

Pardon my ignorance, but if some e-cigs don't have nicotine, why do people "smoke" them?

I think I can give some reasons, some for hand to mouth, some for the inhalation of the vapor, those are 2 things similar to a cigarette, or they have just downgraded from nicotine on their way to a full quit.

I tried to downgrade to 0 nic 3 weeks ago and failed. A lot of stress and I cheated, so I upped it again. My mistake was to drastic a drop, I should have done it slower, but live and learn.

I'm not saying all have the above reasons going on, but those are common. When I was in the ecig shop, I saw someone buying 0 and she wasn't a smoker, she just had to do it. That I can't agree with, as I'm trying to quit this.

I agree that the decision stems from a financial / insurance standpoint.

I agree....(AND I am sadly a smoker.) I am not happy with the change..but understand why it needs to be done...
