NCL Smoking Ban

Did Royal start permitting smoking on balconies again? They had stopped it as of January .

No they did not. Hope the poster you quoted knows that.

I'm just gonna put it out there and say, with all the cruises I have been on I have hardly seen balconies with people on them. I said to myself many times why do people pay for a balcony when they don't use them. Yes they come out for a few minutes when we dock or getting close to land. Between showering, eating breakfast, spending time at the pool or taking off as soon as the ship docks, having dinner and then seeing shows at night. When do you have time to notice people smoking on a balcony? Sorry I am really upset because my husband want to cancel our cruise, and I agree. Gotta go and look for a trip either to cancun or Aruba where we are not treated like we have a dreaded disease

we use our balcony ALL the time as long as there aren't smokers around us. Sail away..on our balcony...morning coffee...on our balcony...before everyone is ready for dinner...balcony. My sister and I spent pretty much the entire morning inMazatlan on our balcony watching their crazy construction practices.

We cruise with our son, so most evenings he goes to the kids club whilst we have a meal and a few drinks. We usually pick him up at around 10pm and then stay in our room.

One of my requirements when booking rooms is that I have access to my balcony whilst the sofa bed is in use (I only book Mini Suites on the Jewel ships for example). When our son is in bed, I go onto my balcony with my iPad and read, watch a film or just look at the stars for a couple of hours each night.

I have to say that whenever I look around when I'm out there I don't see much sign of lots of other people being on their balconies.

Oh no. We are booked on the Getaway starts November 1st. Does this include that cruise as no smoking? I don't smoke but a few do on our group and I told them smoking is allowed on the balconies.

Well, the odds of my wife quitting smoking before our planned 2015 cruise is somewhere between slim and none. And the odds of me booking that cruise and knowing she'll be miserable are absolutely zero. I'm very sad tonight.

Try HAL. They still allow smoking on balconies (for now). An added bonus: MUCH better food in the MDR and buffet.

You get what you pay for. Most are perfectly happy with current offerings on NCL and those who feel like they want to pay more for better food or atmosphere are free to do so in speciality restaurants and probably will still come ahead. :)

If I remember correctly, the Epic already has a non-smoking section. I do not recall seeing one on Getaway. It's good if they are going to divide it like that. The smell on the Epic was really not bad at all, but on the Getaway ... yikes! It was bad.

We did a cruise on the Epic in May 2011, and back then they did indeed have a smaller part of the casino as smoking-section (around the bar, plus around the slot machines). We then did another Epic cruise in August 2013, and the smoking-policy in the casino had changed to almost the opposite. At least last year (2013), you were only allowed to smoke WHILE PLAYING on any of the tables - if you were not playing at a table you could not smoke at all in the casino. That of course was kind of "self-conflicting" - because there were smokers at most of the tables, so the only real "non-smoking" section of the casino was around the slot machines.

Even though both DH and myself are smokers, and will certainly miss the opportunity to have a cigarette on the balcony while cruising - a smoking ban will NOT stop me from cruising with NCL. If I feel the need of a cigarette I will just go to one of the designated smoking areas on board - no big deal. I love cruising with NCL too much to let the new smoking policy change my mind about my favorite type of vacation. Actually the new smoking policy will lead to both my DH and myself smoking less during the cruise - and that is not a bad thing.... :p

Well, I am happy to be one within the 10-20% of cruisers who will be contributing to reduced demand and lower cabin prices for non-smokers. This news is ironic because I canceled 3 CCL cruises last week and obligated $8000 to NCL. Punta Cana on my search engine now. Refunds should pay for a great trip. Really annoyed that my customer service rep didn't mention this when I explained my recent cancelations when reserving aft balcony cabins.

I think there is a safety issue with balcony smoking. When we were on the Epic, someone flicked their still lit cigarette out to the ocean. However it never made it to the Ocean. It was sucked back in through the venting in the ship causing a small fire. It was caught early and resolved but it could have been much worse.

To smoke or not to smoke issue aside I believe this is what is driving the new policy. I vote for passenger and crew safety!

i did the same thing just yesterday cancelled CCL and jumped over here and explained why i changed. I am thrilled that land vacations are not an issue for us .. It is actually cheaper for us to take land vacation than a cruise.. we have a choice we can leave from the USA or Canada.

Well, I must say....the smokers and nonsmokers of NCL patrons are not attacking each other on this thread.

If you read the Carnival threads (and there are MANY), everyone is soooo mean to each other.

The "war" will begin when it's officially announced. So far, only a few know about it.

No argument with that. Idiots populate every group. My self - extinguishing ash tray can now be officially retired.

The vast majority of smokers don't allow a cigarette to rule their lives and plan their vacations. I think very few will jump ship. It makes me laugh and shake my head to see that some are.

Happy to provide you with early morning amusement. The difference is that when you commit to a cruise, you are essentially hostage to the ship for its duration. If I want to be hostage to a smoking zoo I'll start flying through Atlanta late at night where Delta holds me hostage overnight on a regular basis. Won't do it for a week or more though.

We do, too.but lat year on RCL, prior to the new policy we were actually smoked out by the rude biddies next door. They chain smoked and never left the balcony except to go into their suite and turn up the volume on their television. We had to involve the ship's staff after polite requests from us to please give us a little smoke- free time were ignored and mocked. Our bathing suits stank if we placed them on the chairs to dry, and our MB, which had a slider to the balcony, also stank of smoke despite what many will tell you on these boards. Housekeeping could find nothing to get rid of the smell- and I am not an anti smoking freak!!!

So to the poster who never sees people use their balconies- we TRY to!!!!

This was the first time we were totally smoked out. Did have a drunken jack weed drop a cigar on my kid on Disney- no injury , thank goodness. My child wasn't hurt, either.

Sea days reading on the balcony is a real treat- much more peaceful than on the sundeck.

If this is true I hope every smoker sits in front of the slot machines playing a penny a spin.

I don't understand this attitude. Why would you spend your whole vacation in front of a slot machine - to prove a point?

To " punish " the few cruise critic members who have voiced happiness that NCL is MAYBE going smoke free on balconies? How does this enrich your life? geriC has the right attitude.

I don't understand wishing ill on either the smokers or the non-smokers when one side does not get their way. The cruise line's decision is THAT- the CRUISE line's decision.

The whole ha ha in your face look how much money I spend and you don't pissing contest here on the smoking panels is a little icky.

How is that wishing ill will on non smokers, it's a smoking section and if the smokers can only smoke if playing then so be it. I happen to gamble a lot, I am just telling the smoking non gamblers what to do. If it costs NCL money due to the change then so be that too.

Did you ever once think that my attitude comes from the fact that the sanctimonious non smokers treat smokers like the anti-Christ with 3 sixes on our heads?

Smokers can smoke if they wish. It is their decision not mine.

However, if a smoker is upwind from me, while I am trying to enjoy my balcony, I am going to be forced to breath his poison.

I don't think most smokers understand how important it is to non-smokers to have air not polluted with smoke.

You did not read my entire post. I said on EITHER side.Iimme, there are NASTY comments about non smokers as well. I don't smoke and I do not treat smokers like Satan. Period. As to the 3 sixes, I have never seen your head, I doubt that it has any numbers on it- you have never mentioned that you are a politician.

I emailed with 2 different HD's I know last night on NCL. I find it odd that they have no knowledge of this upcoming change since it impacts their staff so much. I guess we will see what the "official" announcement brings.
