Velvetwater Posted July 23, 2014 #2 Share Posted July 23, 2014 (edited) Depends on the countries you are going to but a large majority of Cruise Med ports take Euros. If your cruise stops in places like Israel, Croatia or Turkey it is better to have shekels, kuna or lira for example (even though the big shops take Euros the lovely market/medinas often do not and thats where the best items and bargains are). Salsa25 Posted July 23, 2014 Author #4 Share Posted July 23, 2014 Will visit turkey, croatia, greece and italy. Planning to do our own exursions. We also have a travel cashcard so am wondering if it will be easy to withdraw euros from cash machines? Thanks for the help...
boulders Posted July 23, 2014 #5 Share Posted July 23, 2014 As long as your PIN is 4 digits, it's easy to withdraw euros from a bank machine. Keep in mind there will likely be a daily limit. You should take some money to get you started.
Extra Kim Posted July 23, 2014 #6 Share Posted July 23, 2014 Greece and Italy use Euros, Turkey and Croatia don't but in tourist areas they often accept Euros anyway. A Visacard would solve most of your problems if you want to shop in stores, on the beach and on the local market you would probably need cash. Velvetwater Posted July 23, 2014 #7 Share Posted July 23, 2014 (edited) I would also like to point out the best rate on currency is often at your local bank or post office BEFORE you go...well, it is in the UK anyway. Turkey use lira Croatia use kuna Others use euros. Edited July 23, 2014 by Velvetwater
thinfool Posted July 23, 2014 #8 Share Posted July 23, 2014 I would also like to point out the best rate on currency is often at your local bank or post office BEFORE you go...well, it is in the UK anyway. Turkey use lira Croatia use kuna Others use euros. This is not true for US based travelers. Usually the best rate is found by using your ATM card at an 'in country' ATM machine. While it is convenient to have some local currency in your pocket when you leave the ship, most European countries are awash with ATM machines where you can easily fund your day in that country. sail7seas Posted July 23, 2014 #10 Share Posted July 23, 2014 Be sure to have a back up plan in the event you have ATM problems.
Rare Keith1010 Posted July 23, 2014 #11 Share Posted July 23, 2014 For Turkey if you don't need money for entrance fees than USA Currency is fine if you are from the USA or you can use Euros or British Pounds. For Greece and Italy it would be Euros. Keith
Marie51 Posted July 23, 2014 #12 Share Posted July 23, 2014 I was in Greece, Croatia, and Italy last year. We used euros in all 3 places.
paul929207 Posted July 24, 2014 #13 Share Posted July 24, 2014 In Croatia, Euros are widely accepted except for government controlled expenses. Things like public transport or museums would require local currency. In markets, restaurants and other place catering to tourists, Euros would be accepted. All except Croatia use euros, including Turkey even though some else respond that Turkey is not on the euro. We have been to Turkey recenlty. You may be able to use eruos and us dollars in Croatia, often this is the case in other countries.

We have been to Turkey recenlty. You may be able to use eruos and us dollars in Croatia, often this is the case in other countries. Your post has me confused. Are you saying Turkey IS on the euro? (It is not.) Knowing that most tourist places will take euros is not the same thing as being on the euro. If one wants to go to any official site (museums, etc.) or take public transportation (not taxis), one will need Turkish lira.
dancinman66 Posted July 24, 2014 #16 Share Posted July 24, 2014 Euros and anything else just withdraw at an ATM when you dock Forget worrying about chasing obey at outlandish rates prior to cruising Sent from my iPhone using Forums
