Curious RCI Security Question

Recommended Posts

Well, we just returned from our very first cruise and I will share more of the wonderful experience soon. Here's what we are so curious about. On about the 6th day of the 8 day tour, suddenly a security guard was stationed in the hall right in front of the room across from us. The guard sat in a chair. A new guard would relieve the old one every one or two hours and continued for the rest of the trip, and one was still there as we were leaving to get off the ship.

All the guards were quite personable as we came and went out our door countless times during the day and night, but of course not a one was going to tell us why they were there. What do you think could possibly be the reason? We and some of the other passengers on that floor were very puzzled.

Has any,one else experienced that?

It could be any number of things. Fight, Drugs, Vandalism, Arrest Warrant.

It's not at all unusual.

A couple of years ago on Freedom of the Seas we were next door to a couple who were fighting continually really badly (words and fists !!!).

They gave the wife another cabin and then kept the guy in their original stateroom next door to us with a guard 24/7

Could have been a suicide watch.

Had someone on a TA once (likely just being dramatic) threaten to kill himself (lovers' quarrel). He was removed from his veranda cabin and moved to an inside for a few days until staff felt it was fine to let him out again.

Also could have been someone with Noro who was insistent they not be quarantined. Had this happen as well on that same cruise.

How is having someone sit outside a cabin going to prevent the person inside the cabin from committing suicide?

Normally, this happens when someone is being escorted off the ship in the next port.

Example: They caught a "flasher" in the ladies room so he was allowed to stay in his cabin ( guard outside the door) until we got to Grand Cayman.

I've seen it happen for drugs before.

Yes, saw this also on Indy TA 4 yrs ago. Found out after it was drug related, but 3 days into the cruise a balcony room down the hall was guarded 24/7. Day 6 in the morning luggage was in the hall as we disembarked visiting Ponte Delgada. Upon our return cabin door was open and an officer and attendant were in there cleaning and making up the room. They kicked the cruisers off the ship in the Azores.

We saw this on our Allure cruise last April. In our Behind the Scenes tour, I asked Security about it. It was for some bad behavior. They kept them in their rooms until the next port and then they were put off of the ship. Security disappeared from the hallway on our next port.

it at least stops the jumping off the ship option.

How would a guard in the hallway stop you from jumping off your balcony? He wouldn't even know you had done it. But, I agree with most of the others, they did something wrong and chose to ruin their own vacation.

This was in response to someone replying to my initial post, where security moved the person from their veranda cabin to an inside. Insides don't have verandas ;-) Refer to all 3 posts, #11, 12 and 13.

It was a table mate of mine who shared his story with me. It was a drama filled cruise - that TA... he disappeared from dinner for 3 nights, and on his return to dinner we got the story, from him and his love interest who he was upset about. Security also split them to 2 cabins, letting the other half stay in the veranda, as they didn't make any off the cuff comments about killing themselves.

Words have meaning and will get a reaction ....

There was a recent thread on the Celebrity boards about a woman upset that her non aqua family could not join her in the reserved BLU dining room, so she called customer service on land and threatened to shoot the guest service manager if he didn't give permission, obviously just saying it and likely not intending to do it. The land based agent then contacted ship side security about the comment. She opined how awful it was to have been called to security and listen to the recorded call and now have security following and shadowing her every move from that point forward. Security takes words very seriously.

Just about every possible reason has been listed already: drugs, fighting, vandalism, old arrest warrant discovered..........

I had the same experience as Delirious. There was a couple who had to be separated because of domestic violence. One half was clearly the aggressor, and the guard was outside her door, er, his/her door, 24/7. He, er s/he was given another cabin and his, er, his/her freedom to come and go.

;)

Ah, I see. Indeed, words DO have meaning and they should be taken seriously. I can't believe the woman who threatened the rep DARED to complain about her situation. She should have been escorted off the ship ASAP.

Yes, well I'm glad that RCI protects the cruise experience for the other passengers in this way. I'm sure the officers assigned to the post don't particularly like having to sit in the boring hall but at least they switched out often enough. I noticed all the security guards were from India, so maybe some company from that country has a contract with RCI? Anyway, the incident was surprising and just added some interest to the trip that we weren't expecting.

I find it very disturbing that she was permitted to sail. She clearly has severe anger management issues and could have turned on another passenger or crew member if something else triggered her temper. Corporations should never allow their employees to endure threats from customers. They should have given her the boot and banned her for life from ever sailing again.
