neverbeenhere Posted May 16, 2018 #2 Share Posted May 16, 2018 Try googs: Antarctica cruise video. Yes there are two C’s.
diane.in.ny Posted May 16, 2018 #3 Share Posted May 16, 2018 You could see ice flows, ice bergs, whales, seals, penguins. For the wildlife it just depends if you are in the right place at the right time.
rkacruiser Posted May 16, 2018 #4 Share Posted May 16, 2018 I sailed on the Zaandam for 4 days off Antarctica this past December/January and there were scenic sights each and every day! Sea birds that I have never seen before, whales, penguins, an ice flow that was 2 miles long, ice bergs of all sizes, shapes, and colors, fog, rain, mist, sunny blue skies, light snow (some of our Indonesian/Filipino crew were quite excited about that event one afternoon). I came home thinking: I have done that, don't need to visit that area again. I am re-considering! It was that magnificent.
Rare Coral Posted May 16, 2018 #5 Share Posted May 16, 2018 I booked. I still need to research it. I can't afford the cruise with landings so this maybe the best I get.

Are you doing the first or second one? We are on the first one and I already started a roll call https://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2635412 . rkacruiser Posted May 16, 2018 #7 Share Posted May 16, 2018 Even without the landings, I think you will be pleased with your experience. No idea what Princess may provide during your voyage, but HAL had a geologist, a biologist, a social scientist, and their own EXC specialist who provided commentary in scenic areas and conducted nearly 1x-2x daily presentations in the main show lounge about the area in which we were sailing. My cruise proved to be more educational than I anticipated.

I have been spellbound by "scenic cruising" in places like Milford Sound, Amalia Glacier, Glacier Bay, and so on. And I have no doubt that Princess will have experts on board to prepare us for what we will be experiencing. Am very excited that Princess is returning to this part of the world! Pam in CA Posted May 16, 2018 #11 Share Posted May 16, 2018 I’m sure you will have a good cruise on Princess. In my experience sailing both Princess and HAL in South America and Antarctica, the HAL cruise was exponentially better. My HAL cruise is still one of my all-time top three cruises. Much better overall experience, particularly in ports.

We are on the first one and I already started a roll call https://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2635412 . I held the one before yours (Christmas) and yours (there are 3). I haven't deposited yet. The one before yours is more expensive but fits better into my work schedule (school calendar).

DougH Posted May 17, 2018 #16 Share Posted May 17, 2018 I just booked today. Did a very similar one back in 2009 on the Star Princess, even though just a 'Drive by" it was a fantastic cruise. We stopped in front of several bases and scientists came on board for a presentation and lecture I saw more wildlife by far than on any of my Alaska cruises. cflutist Posted May 17, 2018 #17 Share Posted May 17, 2018 Although we currently have 4 Princess cruises booked, my hubby said that if we are traveling that far, that we are going to land in Antarctica. So we booked a 15-night in April 2017 for December 2018 the the Silversea Cloud luxury expedition ship. 200 pax maximum and 205 crew. Open bar (we don't drink), unlimited Internet but satellite coverage must be sparse down there.

FolksOfMeans - ByNoMeans Posted May 17, 2018 #20 Share Posted May 17, 2018 unlimited Internet but satellite coverage must be sparse down there. When we were there, a few years ago, we had very good Internet service. Enjoy your Cruise; it is a great experience.
diane.in.ny Posted May 17, 2018 #21 Share Posted May 17, 2018 For a more reasonably priced Antarctic landing experience, you might want to check Hurtigruten. https://www.hurtigruten.us/destinations/antarctica/ The fares start just under $7K

Rare Coral Posted May 17, 2018 #24 Share Posted May 17, 2018 which date did you book- I'm doing the 21st.yes will be expensive trip I have holds on December 20 and January 5th. December 20th works with my university schedule better but January 5th I have friends on and is cheaper. I have until this weekend to deposit. I just don't know if my boss will let me miss the beginning of semester (and it would require more vacation time as I have the week of Christmas off). Decisions, decisions. I have a big cruise next month - so I will be focusing on that and then when I get back will look into South America. I have never been and know very little about the area.
