Voyager back home, stuck in Galveston

. I can't imagine having to drive something like the Voyager in the fog..... .

Ships have no problem at sea in heavy fog. They have the equipment for it. We had heavy fog at night while at sea during our last cruise in Canada, Newfoundland and New England. The captain of the Eurodam told me their radar would pick up a rowboat. He said he felt as safe in heavy fog as a clear.

Getting in and out of ports is another thing for the port Authorities have control.

As bad as it is for the pax on board now, it would have been much worse to be stuck outside the harbor with all the TA pax on board AND the next group not knowing what to do already in Galveston. That would have been two ship loads of pax to deal with.

It will sail somewhere.

That's what happened to the Fantasy pax in Mobile. The ship never made it in yesterday. The people waiting to board spent the afternoon at the civic center, and then last evening they had to collect their luggage and head to hotels for the night.

The captain's announcement made it clear that their would be no compensation for missed ports or delayed departure. ( other than port fees ) Having paid for a 7-night cruise that was turning into a 5-night cruise, we had already decided to leave if we were given the option.

All of the onboard stores were closed as well as the casino. It was too cold to use the pools. Rock climbing wall was not open.

Being stuck on a ship in foggy Galvestion was not a vacation. We were told that we could leave the ship but the captain was very stern in his warning not to. The feeling of being trapped was growing.

While I was in line for the departure credit, my wife packed our stuff.

We were off the ship at 6:30 and on our way home. We felt better already.

Sure do hope they get out this morning. If nothing else it would be good to get the shops etc...open.

I doubt seriously they would remain docked for a week as those who want vacation this week would not be too happy so even at a loss RCCL is still ahead overall taking those still aboard somewhere in Mexico.

Some of the other ships stuck have crew who may have planned to get off when they get to their next port to go see family for Christmas but after a few extra days tied up in Galveston they may miss out on those plans. In total 90+ ships affected by the fog in Houston/Galveston alone.

Todd is sitting here looking at the screen with longing, saying "Too bad we didn't drive down last night and see if we could snag a really cheap suite!!" LOL! I wonder if any were available this morning!?

That could go in both ways. It's a great way to make something out of a bad situation by selling 5 night cruises at the pier but I don't think the people who paid for a 7 night with no compensation would be very happy. They'd probably have to price each category and give everyone that price regardless of booking date.
