Room Card - how do you carry it?

you know that room card that each person gets with their picture on it to get on/off the board, get into your room and to charge items on the ship...I hate having to carry a purse or bag with me to keep the card in if I don't have pockets. I think I read a post a few months back when people punched a whole in a corner to wear on a neck key chain. Is that allowed? I have some hanging key chain thing now. One for my work passes and work keys and one for my house and car keys. Yes, I do look like a gym teacher with all those keys around my neck but it keeps my hands free when I have 2 young ones around. Plus I won't lose anything. If I can do that, bring a little hole punch w/me and do it, that would be wonderful. Go to the Lido for my morning coffee and just hang that on my neck. Thoughts? Thanks.

what's a lanyard? Mine is just a long shoelace type material and at the end it is connected with a metal clip which you click your keys into or a work pass if there is a whole punched into it. Seriously, I look like a gym teacher but don't care. Got it from flying with Cathay Pacific in 2001 but still use it. Bet you can get it at the Dollar Store but haven't checked. Thanks.

I have used a lanyard in the past, and now I use a plain silver chain (not real silver, and somewhat sturdy). I've only ever been on one cruise line where they didn't punch a hole for you, and there they gave out little plastic sleeves to attach to your lanyard, so you could carry the card in that.

The other option, for all of you ladies out there, is to stick it in your bra. ;)

A lanyard is exactly what you just described! :) On Carnival, you can go to the casino & get a hole punched in the card.

We sailed on the Zuiderdam June 12 and we had our cards punched at the ships front desk. We used a lanyard and tucked them into our shirts. This worked great for my four year old daughter my wife and myself. Our daughter loved to whip out her key to let us into the room.

I put mine on my one and only cruise on a necklace made by http://www.boojeebeads.com/ they are in the USA..check them out...they are stylish, and I actually get a lot of nice comments on it..have a look and see what you think...I like it better than a lanyard.

This is a wonderful idea and the company store here sells these beads too! I'm gonna go get one!!!

We both use lanyards that we have purchased on previous cruises with HAL - so one says Alaska, and the other is a HAL. We bought lanyards that have a plastic sleeve, so we can carry the room card, expired gift card (used to open the safe) cocktail card, and coffee card. Our wallets stay locked in the room safe. On ports where we do not need a passport, I simply take the room card (it gets you back on the ship) and a credit card (for any purchases) in the plastic sleeve - then there is nothing else to keep track of except my camera.

Interesting questions since up till my last cruise, I just always kept mine in my pocket or in my husband's pocket ;). I never carry a purse on a cruise and although I like my nice designer purses at home while traveling/cruising I just bring a leather fanny pack. But back to while I am posting this past cruise the end of April I used a lanyard for the first time in 27 cruises and the fact that it hung around my neck made it easy to find it was still rather a pain to use. I have the very nice blue and clear beaded kind that HAL sells in their shops on board and has the clear puch holder for the card. At times it can become difficult to get it out from the plastic sleeve because it sticks and you are constantly pulling it out for the door, for a drink and of course going on and off the ship. I had originally purchased the landyard for my previous job where many areas were secured and I had to use a key card to get it but with that you just waved the card and did not have to take it out of the sleeve.

I do not care for the idea of punching a hole in my card so I may just go back to my old way of carrying my card :o

Cruies critic sells lanyard at very reasonable price in their 'store'. Go to the top of the page and you will find where you can shop for CC products.

While you're there...... Pick up some luggage tags. I really like my CC tags.

(:D - No, I don't get commission for selling CC products. :D )

I've used a lanyard for my cruise card since our 1st cruise.:)

It's a totally convenient/safe way to carry my card and I don't fear leaving/losing it somewhere.

Then when I get home and I'm missing being on the ship....I hang the lanyard with my cruise card attached on the entry hall closet door knob. Reminds me of being on the ship each time I open the door.:)

My first wife would have never gotten away with that.:o

:D ...... And then go 'fishing' at the gangway. :)

I am lost without a small purse at all times. Often, I carry a small wristlet and put my card in there with my glasses, small wallet, tissues, lipstick.....

I never carry a large purse or I end up carrying everything for DH.

I have a retractable badge holder you can get them a Staples punch a hole the the door card plastic sleve for the credit and gift card. The retactable can be clip to your pocket or sweater not as distraction as a laynard with a formal dress.

Ah - so when we get off at the ports carry it with me so they can get back on with. Makes sense; thank you.
You'll also have to use the cards for Security to scan you (and them) off the ship in each port. You won't leave the ship without them.

I purchased several beaded lanyards, which, collectively, coordinate with all my clothes. You can get all kinds. Some I like are linked below (sorry for the long urls. tried to use the tiny ones, but they weren't working):

You can ask the bartender at the main bar in the atrium to punch a hole in your card (and your soda card, if you purchase one). I attach a medium sized split ring to the lanyard (if one isn't already attached) so that I can slip the cards onto the ring.

She wouldn't to have had to "fish" too hard. ;) Now on to a serious answer. Mrs. K and I sometimes use the little "fannie" packs. Mrs. K isn't into carrying a purse on shore, partially because I might ask her to carry something for me. :D Got some with double latches so a snatch and run would not be too easy. Of course we often just wear cargo pants or shorts with lots of good pockets that can't be picked too easily.
