Norwegian Cruise Line to Stamp Out In-Cabin Smoking

I honestly always believed that NCL had the same smoking policy as the other lines, no smoking in cabins only on balconies. BUT this past cruise we were once affected by a smoker. We were walking through the hall to the elevator and OMG it was if we were walking through the casino. Evidently there was a heavy smoker in one of the cabins and the smoke was coming under the door. This was on the Sun, an older ship and perhaps the exhaust system isn't up to par. But there was no way to avoid the smoke if I wanted to get to the elevator. I couldn't even imagine the stench of that cabin after the heavy smoker was through with it. Gross.

Fact #1 - NCL is going public.

Fact #2 - NCL is changing Smoking Policy.

Your facts are correct. Is there a connection? Probably not. A business decision was made because a larger percentage of their passengers prefer non-smoking cabins. Fewer people are smoking these days. That's also a fact.

Actually that may or may not be correct and no one really knows for sure or will know for sure. As stated before they can only go by who they hear from. Since it is obvious that smokers would not be calling, writing, emailing that they want smoking out of the cabins (since it was already there). I as a smoker was not overly happy at the status quo (being banned from smoking in over 90% of public places on the ship) but was content if I chose to cruise NCL that was their policy or not cruise with them and didn't feel the need to contact NCL to state "I like smoking in the cabins". Nor did I feel the need to complain that I couldn't sit and enjoy a drink in a bar complete with cigarette.

So where did NCL get their "preference" from? The non-smokers who did wish to phone, write, email etc. Therefore, having NCL believe that this was the preference from "a larger percentage".

"Post hoc ergo propter hoc, Latin for "after this, therefore because of this," is a logical fallacy (of the questionable cause variety) that states, "Since that event followed this one, that event must have been caused by this one." It is often shortened to simply post hoc and is also sometimes referred to as false cause, coincidental correlation, or correlation not causation. It is subtly different from the fallacy cum hoc ergo propter hoc, in which the chronological ordering of a correlation is insignificant."

While the smoking policy change may have resulted as part of their plans to go public, the fallacy lies in the assumption that because they announced the IPO therefore they banned smoking in cabins.

Every time I forget my umbrella it rains.:D

LOL

Promise my last word on the subject.

The stock announcement came first - yes. But which decision came first?

Anyway I will now be booking a cruise with NCL because of the policy change.

Happy cruising to all :)

I'm wondering if any group/company is thinking about chartering cruises that cater to smokers/non-smokers. What would be the response of a cruise line if a company offered to charter a ship with no smoking (except for staff quarters) anywhere or with smoking permitted in cabins and balconies no matter what the normal policy is?

Please note cigars are only to be smoked in designated areas - not your balcony. Thank you.

Your point being?

??? Who mentioned balconies ??? If I'm in a smoking area and someone wants to light up a cigar - it's not me that's bothered!

I am a smoker, banning smoking in cabins won't effect me, I only smoke on the balcony, and only when my neighbors are not present or if it's ok with them while they are out there. My cabin mate does not smoke and I am considerate of her and others. Now....if I am in a smoking area of the ship and a nonsmoker decides to occupy that area, they have the decision to stay or go to another area. It's give and take with all as far as I'm concerned.

...my favorite smoker story.

I was walking around the promenade deck enjoying the sea air. I came upon a nice lady who was puffing away right in front of the NO SMOKING sign on deck 7 of the Star. As I passed her I laughed and she looked puzzled. So I showed her the sign, I didn't give her a hard time, though, just smiled.

She smiled back and then in the Lowest, Gravelliest, Phlegmiest smoker's voice I have ever heard said, "Sorry, I didn't even see that!"

Loved it!

Without reading all the postings above, all I can say is: IT'S ABOUT TIME!!:D I cannot bring on a clothes iron anymore:(, but somebody else can have a cigarette in their room:eek:. I've never fallen asleep ironing:rolleyes:, but some people do and could fall asleep smoking!!! Even better news would be for no smoking on balconies as well, because a lit cigarette could fall to an open balcony below and then.... well that could be a whole other story.

Is there any topic other than politics or religion that provokes such passion? We have an aft cabin - does anyone have experience with this location and the nuisance of cigarette smoke?

I understand that I will have to tolerate some smoking. My hope is that we are not surrounded by the "chainers" - those who smoke continuously. Have a smoke with your coffee in the AM, or with your cocktail in the PM, but please - not all day long. Let's share the air and both be happy.

But hey, no problem. So long as you don't mind hearing Barney or AC/DC set at the loudest volume from 7 am to 11 pm. After all, it won't damage you as much as your cigarette smoke will damage me!

The next step in the near future is to eliminate smoking on the balconies. They're just phasing it in a little slowly to give people the change to adapt.

Could be. And I'd be a happy cruiser if they made that change before my cruise in March 2012.

No, but it might put a damper on your pleasure when you get a visit from security!

I suppose NCL is aware that there are fewer smokers these days, at least in this part of the world. They probably made an assumption that more of their passengers would prefer non-smoking cabins. If bookings decline because of that decision they'll know they were wrong.

I was a smoker for over 40 years and I understand how you feel. A drink just isn't the same without that cigarette. I had to quit 5 years ago because of health problems and there are times that I still get that craving.

For the love of God, can the host of this thread please pull this post already??? I am so sick of the hatred, sarcastic remarks, etc! People who don't smoke on this board - you have shown your lowest of low by saying all the nasty things that you have toward others that do. It is the saddest thing to read how much hatred you hold in yourselves. MOVE ON!!!!!

Unfortunately yes there is the risk of your air quality being smoky. Like you a little bit I can handle but hopefully you won't have the dawn to duskers around you. On our 1st cruise we had an aft suite and had a chain cigar smoker. So at least with this new rule that won't happen. I did find that he didn't like my Bette Midler so that's one to keep in mind. On a houseboat vacation when we found the perfect beach and had another houseboat circling we would crank up our "Zep" repellent and that worked every time.:D
