Where will we dock?

Will there be an Oceania shuttle from the dock to the city?

Hi Marsha,

Info presently is Hiep Phuong port - approx. 1 hr to downtown HCMC.

Last time there no shuttle and last minute port change resulting in 2 hours to HCMC.

Jayne, I've been looking for information on dock location (there are numerous ones for Saigon) for our early Feb. cruise.  All indications are that it will be Hiep Phuoc, but I know the port assigns the location & things can change.  So I was wondering if, on your last time to HCMC, the port change was from Hiep Phuoc to another, farther port, or if there was a total change in the city.  Also, were you on one of the larger Oceania (or other cruise line) ships or one of the smaller ones? I know for sure that a smaller Oceania ship recently visited Hiep Phuoc, but I'm on Riviera, which is a bit larger/deeper than the small ships. And from what I've read, when a ship is docked at Hiep Phuoc, a shuttle is often provided (no charge or minor charge, depending upon cruise line, to the area around the Saigon Opera House.  But of course, we will all likely have to wait until we're on our cruise to determine what and where we'll dock.

It was 2015 and we were on Nautica. Had a private guide tour. O made last minute port change….all I remember was a 2 hour drive and a long but enjoyable day.

In Barbados.  No shuttle?  We told it isn’t far.  That’s absurd. For those people who are handicapped, it’s an enormous distance. Add the heat. You have a recipe for disaster. We walked to the terminal. We got a taxi back to the ship.  What happened to FREE Shuttle? RCL ship next to us had free shuttle.

In Barbados, were there taxis?  When we were there, transportation wasn't a problem.  But that was a while ago, and it was not embarkation/disembarkation day, not a holiday, and no other ships were in town, so my experience may have been different.

It's probably too late for this info, but here's what the IQCruising site  says: 

Shuttle bus

Most luxury cruise lines (like Regent or Crystal) offer complimentary shuttle buses. If your cruise line doesn't offer a shuttle bus, there is also a paid bus - US $2.00 per person, each way - right outside the terminal. Taxis are also available but it doesn't make much sense to pay extra unless you really need to.

In the Cruise Terminal of Barbados Port in Bridgetown, cruise passegers will find all services and amenities needed to explore the island-nation on your own.

No specific terminal. All depends on where the harbor master says to go.  It can change multilple times before arrival. Not like some ports where the cruise line builds terminals or where they go every week like Miami Fort Lauderdale port canaveral etc.

ok thanks. Hoping it's Ocean Terminal but as I think that's the easiest to get on the Star Ferry and to Victoria Peak.

Hi.  We were just on Riviera, Ho Chi Minh City.  We docked as expected at Hiep Phuoc, a commercial port a 45-60 minute drive to District 1 (major sightseeing area).  Traffic was horrendous, as it was Tet (New Year's) in Vietnam, and more people than usual were off from work for the whole week, and in the city buying flowers, selling things, etc. We did an Oceania tour one day and I pre-hired a driver for my next day's adventures in the northern area of the city.  There some taxis there outside the port, but not nearly as many as you might expect.  But it WAS Asia, and a huge week for many people, making things perhaps slower and harder than usual.  We just got home last night and I'm dealing with some stuff this morning (slowly!).  But later today I'll dig out my notes.  I think there was a shuttle to around the Opera House, but I need to check the Currents.  And keep in mind HCMC has 5 or 6 different ports, with the port making the "where" assignment, so you may be going somewhere else this week.  But 45-60 minutes for Saigon is much better than what the larger ships have to put up with.  And you get a little bit of Mekong Delta views from the ship as you go up a river to get to Hiep Phuoc -- not very scenic, but at least mildly interesting.

 

We had a great time on our cruise, although the heat and humidity forced us to cut short many days a bit - exhausting. If you go to Nha Trang and Hue, you'll enjoy those too. We went to Hoi An from Hue and took a city adventure in Hha Trang.  Many of the Asian ports are distant from any major sightseeing opportunities, so be patient, plan ahead, and take a lot of light clothing.

If you're looking for info on Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City), I posted something to a thread called "Saigon" that was started by someone (apparently) called Marsha.  Riviera docked at the Tan Cang Hiep Phuoc dock, a container port on the river. There was a shuttle to center city (district 1 of HCMC).  I'll try to update the list for shuttles availability in the next few days.  (This cruise was from Singapore to Bangkok).

In 2021 there was a shuttle that made 2 stops - iirc the Marina and old town (park/overlook not far from the sea organ).

Free shuttle buses are generally offered when:

The ship is docked a long walk from the main thoroughfare

Taxis and or public transportation are not easily accessible from the port. .

The port is industrial and not pedestrian-friendly.

The decision on whether free buses will be offered will be based on the port used and will be made closer to or during the sailing

Once on board, a list of ports that will offer a complimentary shuttle into town will be provided / shown in daily Currents

Vilagarcia (port for Santiago de Compostela) Port authority provided free shuttle Apr 2023 to tourist info center downtown at O Cavadelo (closed at 9 AM). Local buses & cab stand nearby but not much open/few people around. I took cab to train, train to Santiago, walked back to shuttle, shuttle to ship.

Depends on the port

We had a couple of places where the shuttles stopped for an hour during lunch times 

 

Each night they leave a copy of CURRENTS. It will give info about the port. Very helpful.
