Someone who just returned from the Splendor has started a new thread. I asked her about the tax/gratuity. This was her response.

"You have to pay a one-time 15% gratuity in the beginning. When we were in our embarkation port of Long Beach, we had to pay tax, which came out to $0.72 a drink. Once we set sail there was no more tax. Even when we were in Mexico, there were no taxes. It was only in Long Beach."

Alcohol Pass = $42.95 x 7 Nights = $300.65. 7% Tax = $21.05 - $321.70 Total... Add Gratuity on Top of that.

You will not be paying $21.05 in taxes.

You will only pay the tax on the drinks you have before you get to international waters. For example, if you buy the package and then order a drink for $8.95 you will have an additional charge on your account of $0.63 (using your example of 7% tax)...after you in international waters, there will be no additional charges for sales tax.

Thanks for the clarification... it's the different for the soda card they must bill it differently.

Hmm so no response as of yet from JH...not sure what to read into that

Okay I see the advantage to waiting until we are in the I open seas to buy....

You can buy the package while still in port, they don't charge tax on the package. But if you order a drink while still in port on the package, they will also charge your S&S a small amount of tax (whatever is applicable for that port). So on your S&S account you will see a few very small charges for each individual drink you had while still in port, i.e., maybe 75 cents or so, depending on what you're drinking.

This is absolutely correct. My tax for a Miami Vice was $0.63. The tax on a Diet Coke was $0.17. Surely not enough to deter me from buying drinks in Long Beach before we set sail.

I was just thinking the same thing! You are on a cruise and spending thousands of dollars. Why would anyone quibble about 2 or 3 dollars in local sales tax until you hit international water?

If you are in U.S. Waters there will definitely be tax... you are tax free once you reach international water. If at all possible, NEVER buy anything while in any Port, ALWAYS wait till you are in international waters... you will save a little here and there if you do. I learned this on the last cruise when I bought the endless bubbles package. If I would have waited 5 minutes I would have saved like $4.00, lol... on this Alcohol package you would probably save closer to $30.00. If you are in international water the casino will be open... if not it will be closed. That is a good way of figuring it out.

It has already been reported that the embarkation tax on the new program is per drink while in port, not on the entire purchase like the endless bubbles program.

Will this package be available on the Freedom in December?

Is Dewar's white included?

Since Dewar's white is only 5.75...yes, it's included, as well as Dewar's 12, which is 7.50. The only drinks not included are the ones over 10 bucks, Dows Port @ 10.50, Hardy XO cognac @ 12.25 and Patron Reposado @ 10.95. And the souvenir glasses.

another question for op --

when do the 15 drinks reset? is it midnight? or like 3am? do you happen to know that. Goodness, I have seen bar receipts for 1am, 2am. so am i working on yesterday or today's 15 drinks?

another interesting point I just realized, say a patron is at the casino playing(losing), do you think they will tell this person that their 15 drinks are up and they can not have anymore drinks (my bet, this person will pack up and quite the casino for the night a bit bitter about the situation.) Pit Boss may be sorry to see the money walk off the floor.

Unless this policy has changed in the past few days....

I honestly thought I read a post from John Herald that stated there is NOT a 15 drink limit .....at 15 drinks, the bartender is alerted to check that the passenger who reached 15 drinks is ok and can PROCEED WITH CAUTION;).

I know it is on one of these threads?????

JH said that, but that is not what is happening on Victory and Splendor. Someone ask on his blog for a followup , he said he would reply 2 days ago, but no clarification as of yet.....stay tuned..:)

The Pit boss can give anyone they want a free drink.
