From HAL's site:

Is Smoking Allowed On Board?

For the comfort of all of our guests, all staterooms (cabins), showrooms and all other indoor areas are designated non-smoking with the exception of:

  • Casino (Active players only)
  • Northern Lights Disco (ms Oosterdam, ms Noordam, ms Westerdam & ms Zuiderdam only)
  • Seaview Bar (except that smoking is not permitted in the Seaview Bar on the ms Maasdam, ms Ryndam or ms Statendam)
  • Sports Bar
  • Crow's Nest (except that smoking is not permitted in the Crow’s Nest on the ms Eurodam, ms Oosterdam, ms Noordam, ms Nieuw Amsterdam, ms Westerdam or ms Zuiderdam)

While smoking is not permitted in staterooms, guests are allowed to smoke on stateroom verandahs. Smoking is permitted on certain other designated, outside decks. Cigar and pipe smoking is not allowed inside the ship; it is only permitted on the outside decks where smoking is otherwise allowed.

Effective on all cruises departing on or after January 4, 2013, our smoking policy will change to reflect our commitment to the comfort of all of our guests. The ship by ship schedule is below.

For the guests who wish to smoke, there will continue to be designated areas available for smoking on outside decks. In addition, smoking is permitted on stateroom verandahs. Cigar and pipe-smoking is permitted in the designated smoking areas of outside decks and verandahs only and not inside the ship.

Designated smoking areas:

  • Stateroom verandahs
  • Casino (Active players only)
  • Seaview Bar
  • Outside Decks
    • Sports Deck
    • Observation Deck (ms Prinsendam, ms Eurodam, ms Nieuw Amsterdam, ms Noordam, ms Oosterdam, ms Westerdam, and ms Zuiderdam only)

Electronic cigarettes are permitted in staterooms but not in public areas. Any guest who smokes cigarettes, cigars or pipes inside staterooms in violation of our policy will be charged a $250 cleaning fee.

 Why look for trouble? Why double check with HAL when you board?

I don't understand why you would single yourself out for attention and possible tangle when the HAL website clearly states the policy regarding e-cigarettes and their use in cabins.

HAL put it in writing for all the world to read.

Don't go looking for someone to argue the point with you unless you Want that debate.

IMO

This past Nov 25 on Nieuw Amsterdam and again Dec 2 on Westerdam, I persoannly made sure with the Hotel Managers that it was OK for me to use my e-Cigs not only in my stateroom, but also in all other areas of the ship.

Per the Hotel Managers, their only request was that while in Public Areas of the ship, if I was using them, was to try and be discreet about them because some passengers do not realize what they are and might think I was smoking a real cigarette. so, to be discreet in Public Areas I would cup one hand over the glow at the end of the e-Cig.

Just wanted to relay my 1st hand experience with the e-Cigs on HAL:)

EDITED TO SAY: dr.dawg, I am sorry. I did not read through the thread before I'd posted my reply to you so I did not see post #5.

Agree 100%. If a yes or no answer was all that was required why not look at the website or call HAL. Pretty simple.

Maybe because what you hear from Seattle or the website may not have any relation to what is actually the case on a ship? If there is a $200 fine involved I would check with the ship upon boarding.

In some cases. I think in this case you can take that info to the bank. My point was that the OP was getting upset because posters said more then yes or no. If the poster is that easily offended he should be going to the source.

When a company posts something that clearly on their website, they are obliged to live by their written word.

Does anyone really think anyone on any HAL ship is going to assess a cleaning fee if someone uses a e-cigarette and they point out the VERY clear language HAL put on their website?

I agree in many other issues, it is wise to inquire on the ship but in this case........ their written word leaves no room for confusion.

I tried to say this in my early reply, but guess I did not make myself clear. It IS allowed, and frankly, no one would have any idea whether a person was using an e-cig or not unless you actually observed them. No odors of any kind are present or left behind. Really is a moot point and from two cruises of experience, no one even notices. A win for everybody and much ado about nothing.

Can we please get back to chair-hogs and dress codes?:D

good people, let me say to you that i am neither trying to be a 'lightening rod for hate,' nor am into wasting my time 'stirring pots.' who would want to wear either of those labels? i just asked a simple question and pleaded it would not lead to anything more. but, as usual, it did. joanie is the wise one, no more smoking threads. and for me no more dress 'code' threads either. i was not looking to send anyone into 'attack mode.' who wants that? i'm an old man, a retired priest, a ph.d in education, who lives in a simple mountain cabin. i like cc, but i had heard it could be 'rough,' and it is. i thought this could be a place to raise questions and articulate issues -- but it is not. it can be a place of hate alright, and i guess i was a lightening rod for that yesterday. to posters #1-4 you answered my question forthrightly; and i am most appreciative. i did find the addendum to hal's policy on their website, finally. so, sail, i will take your always good advice, run off a copy, and have it handy if i get hasseled on my cruise.

believe me, i have NEVER set out to be a lightening rod for hate, to stir the pot for the sake of stirring, or anything else nefarious. which, i guess, is why it causes me so much pain when some of you go after me. i'll be careful about when to post here in the future.

People do tend to get their backs up when constantly insulted by you and they reply in kind. If you were kinder and more gentle then you would receive very good responses.

You shouldn't need to run off a copy in case you get hassled as long as you follow the rule that you cannot use e-cigs in public areas. Who is going to hassle you in your own cabin or on your verandah?

Good advice. Use them in your cabin and/or verandah, and don't ask for special favors. The written word on the HAL site is what matters.

In the interest of generating more light than heat (and a little humor) in the discussion:

Dawg, pay no mind to the Greek chorus. When one starts, they all chime in. They have the nickname they have in other parts of the interwebz for a reason. They can actually impart useful knowledge when they're not ganging up on somebody. I learned some time ago to let their bullying go in one ear and out the other.

Anyway, go ahead and smoke your e-cig in your cabin. There's no odor or other smoking evidence AFAIK, so who's to know? In public areas of the ship, it'd be best to be mighty discreet. It might be entertaining to fire one up, just to see the rabid anti-smokers do the fake coughing and hand-flapping thing, but that could lead to an unpleasant confrontation...you know how folks are about taking a joke these days.

I hope you have a great cruise on the Maasdam. That's a ship that called my name for many years, but it was always too expensive. Do come back and let us know how the repositioning up to Montreal works out for you.

In public areas only by special dispensation. ;)

If you had read the post by Krazy Kruizers, you'd have seen that what I asked in November and December of 2012 was NOT yet in effect.

I Quote part of Her response to the OP, which I believe is either post # 3 or 4: QUOTE "Effective on all cruises departing on or after January 4, 2013" UNQUOTE

Therefore, insinuating that I asked for "Special Dispensation" is not true. At the time there was no policy regarding the e-cigs on HAL. My 2 cruises where I asked was November 25, 2012 and December 2, 2012, long before the new ruling was in effect:)

Thank you for allowing me to clear this misunderstanding up:)
