Charlie'sPet Posted August 19, 2013 #1 Share Posted August 19, 2013 I was wondering how cold or warm it will be in the MDR during our Alaska cruise the beginning of September. I plan on wearing a sleeveless dress for most nights at dinner and don't know if I should bring a sweater. Thanks! ;)
OlsSalt Posted August 19, 2013 #2 Share Posted August 19, 2013 I was wondering how cold or warm it will be in the MDR during our Alaska cruise the beginning of September. I plan on wearing a sleeveless dress for most nights at dinner and don't know if I should bring a sweater. Thanks! ;) We were on the Zuiderdam and it was quite cold. I had to bring a sweater or wrap after the first few nights. We were near a window and an exit door so it might have been a little more cold because of those features. I found the investment in a good cashmere wool stole is the best defense to over A/C rooms (showroom can often has same problems). It is light and easy to carry around and has such a nice soft warmth to it. It is now a travel basic to tuck in for just about every situation - including bus tours and air planes. Got mine on Nordstroms online. A real Pashmina can work almost as well, as long as it is not one of the many fakes that show up all over the world these days. innlady1 Posted August 19, 2013 #3 Share Posted August 19, 2013 I always pack a lightweight cotton sweater 'just in case'. Various areas of the ship can be chilly.
sevenseasnomad Posted August 19, 2013 #4 Share Posted August 19, 2013 By all means pack a wrap of some type. At night the ship's public rooms are freezing, even near the Equator!
Krazy Kruizers Posted August 19, 2013 #5 Share Posted August 19, 2013 I have yet to find any dining room cool/cold on any ship in any area of the world. But I do pack a very light shawl -- just in case.
jtl513 Posted August 19, 2013 #6 Share Posted August 19, 2013 We find the MDR on all ships to be chilly when we first go in for early seating (5:30 - 5:45) but warms up to be more comfortable after it has been filled with people and activity for a couple of hours. If you eat 7:00 or later you might not find it too chilly.
startwin Posted August 19, 2013 #7 Share Posted August 19, 2013 Yes, I always found it gets quite chilly in the MDR on the Z. Bring a wrap of some kind, or a light sweater.
Cruising-along Posted August 19, 2013 #8 Share Posted August 19, 2013 I have actually found the opposite, that the MDR is too warm (but I tend to run hot) :p I do carry a lightweight wrap with me because other areas of the ship can be quite cool. ginger and professor Posted August 19, 2013 #11 Share Posted August 19, 2013 We always ask for a table near the fireplace.
solocanadian Posted August 19, 2013 #12 Share Posted August 19, 2013 I always wear a black blazer that goes with all my evening outfits. The Zuiderdam was cool in May on Alaska cruise and Zaandam was freezing on Mexico cruise in April. Suggest you go prepared. It varies from ship to ship. OlsSalt Posted August 19, 2013 #13 Share Posted August 19, 2013 I think it helps to understand while we are sitting there in our sleeveless tops enjoying dinner, the waiters are working full bore coming in and out of hot kitchens - so keeping a place on the cooler side for them is part of the equation. Probably the same thing for the showroom - some sort of temperature compromise for both audience and performers.
mamaofami Posted August 19, 2013 #14 Share Posted August 19, 2013 I always take a sweater to the Mdr and never use it.But I do use it in other areas of the ship. ONCE I FOUND thip so cold that I bought a sweat shirt in the store.

Typhoon1 Posted August 19, 2013 #16 Share Posted August 19, 2013 Just like other areas of the ship, it can get chilly. A sweater or light wrap might not be a bad idea.
