MUTS - Crown - Unhappy

My wife and I were on the Crown Princess. We were in loungers by the Neptune pool, and we did not hear the MUTS concert playing over the Calypso pool farther aft. Distance is your friend in this regard. It wasn't a problem, just wanted to say that Movies Under The Stars (or Sky) is not the only entertainment that would interrupt the 'quiet serenity of a public pool' We did hear an assistant Cruise Director on a microphone emcee'ing the MEN'S SEXY LEGS CONTEST for 20 minutes or so at the Neptune Pool.

Oh, dear! Not my cup of tea at all!

I am glad to hear the noise from MUTS is not ubiquitous, but very disappointed to hear of the sexy legs contest at what I thought was the adult (and therefore quiet?) pool. One of the major reasons I have been considering Princess is that I had a feeling from their advertising, even their name (!), and from many CC posts, that it was a more elegant, refined, quiet experience than most mainline ships. If it isn't, the attraction diminishes. I don't like 3000+/- passenger ships, of which there are several among the Princess fleet, especially serving the itineraries I am interested in. I do like their wraparound promenade decks. I am attracted by what has been described as excellent food and service. But I definitely don't like (the idea of) MUTS or noisy pool contests.

For me, atmosphere is everything. If Princess is just a big but expensive Carnival ship, though with better food and service and an open promenade deck, maybe it's not for me...

I understand that some people like it and some don't, but one of the great things about Princess (other than the new Royal and maybe the Pacific and sister ship) are the many pool options. On a typical Grand class ship, if MUTS is bothering you, go to one of the other five pools (four in some cases). If you go to the Spa pool or the Terrace pool, you aren't going to hear anything. Even the Neptune or Calypso pool next door (depending on the ship) is often free of any noise from MUTS.

It's kind of like someone saying they hate the piano bar entertainment and wish they would do away with it. If you don't like the piano bar, go to one of the other ten bars on the ship (or however many there are)!

I am pleased to hear there are so many options -- I guess I never counted up the number of pools while looking at Princess deck plans. But the idea that I might have to relocate from my chosen pool due to a noisy contest starting up is not appealing.

My understanding of the new Royal and Regal ships is that there isn't nearly the amount of pool space that they have on the Grand class ships, so this is obviously a draw back to these particular ships. But there are what, nine or ten Grand class ships to choose from? (not to mention the Island and Coral)

Not interested at all in Royal Princess for these and other reasons.

Get rid of traditional dining. There are a good many passengers who hate the whole idea of traditional dining. This way the problem is solved and all can eat and make the entertainment they want.

There are a lot of people who like traditional dining and hate anytime dining.

That is one reason that I love Princess. They have options for everyone.

You are thinking of the Terrace pool. It does stay tranquil back there.

This was at one of the "Main" pools. The one without the MUTS screen.

~Hope this helps~

Dont want to watch films in the day time. It is not under the Stars!!

Nor do I want to watch them in the cabin. I wanted to watch them Under the Stars!!

Oh well, wont spoil the holiday!! But not best pleased......

We did 15 days on Star Princess last year. The ONLY place I heard MUTS was at the one pool. The ONLY place I found it intrusively loud was in the smoking area between the two pools. That acted kind of like a sound tunnel. The smokers didn't like it. (I'm not a smoker but my son is and he was on the same cruise.)

There were plenty of places and pools to go to that didn't have MUTS and where you couldn't hear it at all. I think there are just a lot of complainers who want it all "their way" and anything they don't want or utilize is "bad".

As for the "men's legs contest" that really doesn't sound like a Princess cruise to me. They do have the "boat competition" where teams have built a small boat to float a 6 pack across the pool and may have a few other innocuous poolside activities but a "men's legs" contest really doesn't sound much like Princess. I actually like the ice carving that they do by the pool. I have no artistic genes at all and it's kind of fascinating to me to see them turn a block of ice into something awesome.

Your characterization isn't fair. I - and numerous others - never utilize the casino, but I have never sailed with anyone who wanted it eliminated because they didn't use it. I also don't use the library (bring my own books), the coffee bar (don't drink coffee), the exercise facility (it's a vacation!), any of the dance locations / night club venues (not my thing), or usually spa services. In no event would I want any of these eliminated, or do I consider them "bad" as you charge. The difference is that none of these intrude on one's ability to enjoy a major common area of the ship, as opposed to having to relocate due to the desire to avoid "second hand sound." The prior poster who suggested wireless headphones for MUTS had a great idea. I didn't realize that one had to check their opinion on something at the gangway in order to be an acceptable Princess customer.

Non-casino lovers here have posted that they hate the casino

because smoke drifts into nearby areas.

Name a topic -- someone here will complain about it endlessly.

Don't sweat the small stuff!! You are on a fantastic cruise. :)

You have a point, but when various cruise lines distinguish themselves from each other via such amenities at MUTS, it is no longer "small stuff," if cruisers choose that line for that feature. One could go on a "fantastic cruise" on many lines, but many cruisers choose a particular line (in this case, Princess), for a particular feature (or set of features), in this case, MUTS. Just sayin' :)

It was the Crown Princess. I haven't been on a Carnival cruise in 38 years if you are thinking I confused lines. :)

I plan to try to see an ice carving demo one of these days. I admire the finished product and the process must be really fascinating, especially if you don't know what it is going to be!

I love MUTS. Sitting is very painful for me so I very rarely go to a cinema, it is great to be able to lie down and watch a film outside, my only other option is to lie on my bed to watch them and that really isn't as much fun :)

Yes, I do wish that it would only be used when there is something specific to watch during the day, but it is usually easy enough to avoid if I want to.

Later on' date=' it was shown in the Princess theater, but my hubby was not to be found when I saw it in the Patters, so I went to watch it with a fruit plate -- oh, irony.

As for anytime dining, I think I would rather miss the entertainment than to do that again.[/quote']

Much as I enjoyed your comic scene of being on a date with a fruit plate, I am particularly interested in why you say you would never do Anytime Dining again. Care to elaborate?

Truer words have never been written on these boards.....

Might as well just stay home if one can't see the forest for the trees.:p

Apparently the slogan "Escape Completely" is still lost on a fair amount of the seasoned cruisers that post here. It's understandable why the OCD afflicted may want to maximize their enjoyment.....But sheesh.....Is it really necessary to micromanage one's vacation down to every minute detail?

Oh wait.....nvm.....I forgot where I was. Many who post here are indeed highly critical, hence the site's name.

Now you put water in a cup, it becomes the cup; You put water into a bottle it becomes the bottle; You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.....Flow in the living moment. — We are always in a process of becoming and NOTHING is fixed. Have no rigid system in you, and you'll be flexible to change with the ever changing. OPEN yourself and flow, my friend. Flow in the TOTAL OPENNESS OF THE LIVING MOMENT. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves. Moving, be like water. Still, be like a mirror. Respond like an echo. "

On most of the cruises I've been on, we've been able to do MUTS and late seating.

I remember the first time we watched a movie on MUTS. It was on a coastal from SF to Vancouver, and the first time I was on a ship with it. We watched 7 pounds starting at about 10:30.

In May, the weather off the coast of Northern California to Canada can be very cold. I think it was in the 40s. I had my down jacket on and about 8 of their blankets (not many people there). My thought was that it was a concept that works great in the Caribbean, not so good in the North Pacific.

However, my hat is off to the hardy souls I saw bundled up watching the Superbowl live in the waters off of Elephant Island in Antarctica in temperatures around freezing. Extraordinary, if you think about it, 100 years ago Ernest Shackleton hiked across that island to save the lives of his crew. Now, 100 or so years later, the Superbowl is live on the Jumbotron.

you don,t potstech princess like to hear folks opinions .

folks on c c like to have their opinion and if its not the same as theirs SOME do not like it and rant .

cruise critic is ment to be a cruise discussion platform be your opinion good or bad about one aspect of cruising or cruiseline , once that changes it no longer becomes a forum just a bunch of folks who think their opinions are upmost and foremost .

I have just heard (and I don't know where the person got this information from) that in order to hear the movie you have to rent an MP3 player. Is this true? My last Princess cruise (a few years back) we didn't have to rent anything to hear the movie. There was a suggestion that this was just in the Sanctuary. Has anyone else heard about this?

Phew, I thought this would be another expense imposed by the cruise line. Looking forward to our Nov 2013 cruise with 3 days at sea, lounging by the pool watching a movie and have a cocktail or two.:D

As the OP I thought I should update this thread with details of what happened to us on this 17 night Crown Cruise to the Med where it was very hot.

Out of the 17 nights MUTS was only screened at about the 10.30 pm time (suitable for 2nd sitting) on 4 nights. Two nights it was not available (Venice sailaway and Deck Party). On the remaining 11 nights the late showing of MUTS was at about 9.30pm and we were unable to see Movies under the STARS. We were disappointed.

We are long time cruisers with long experience of both 1st and 2nd sitting. We fully appreciate that there are limitations on entertainment with 2nd sitting. However we did not expect that a big Princess feature such as MUTS would not be available to 2nd sitting diners for so much of the cruise. Just imagine that the shows were being timed at 9.30pm and that the earlier shows would not have finished before 2nd sitting began. I know many people like Anytime dining, but we feel it is not for us for a number of reasons.

We had a fantastic cruise, as always with Princess. It was also very eventful - full credit to Captain, crew and Princess.
