MUTS - Crown - Unhappy

The best idea would be to drop MUTS completely. There are a good many passengers who hate the whole idea of movies at sea. I have often thought that if I could get away with tossing a sledge hammer at the screen (think Apple commercial), I would.

DON

I beg to differ re: how many actually "hate the whole idea".

If you read these boards objectively I think you will notice that those that dislike it are more vocal and tend to actually start threads about hating MUTS. But most of those threads are filled with comments about how much people enjoy them and are defending MUTS.

As per usual the negative and disgruntled are the first to post.

We would just reiterate that we think MUTS is a fabulous option for those warm calm evenings when one can cuddle under the stars and watch a movie. But during the day I wish I had a sledge hammer to wreck the screen, the speakers, and anything else connected with that intrusive system.

Partner loves MUTS movies at night. I am not a movie buff. We switched to ATD and now can schedule dinner around events we want to attend at night. Sometimes we just eat dinner in the HC in order to get to the events which is no big deal.

As for daytime MUTS, I do enjoy listening to the concerts but the rest is just OK.

I've been sucked into MUTS a few times myself but there are times when I wish it would just go away. I prefer a movie theatre, not a dive-in.

I wish I could enjoy the pool without having to yell over MUT's sound track talking to someone or cup my ears to hear what they have to say in return.... wouldn't it be nice if MUTS had wireless headphones available with which one could listen to the sound track at their own level and that the peace and quiet of an afternoon 'at the beach' could be enjoyed by everyone else.

That's a really nice idea. In a society concerned with "second hand smoke," maybe we should also get sensitive to "second hand sound!"

Hi. Currently on Crown and Muts now showing at 8.15 and 10.30 so all is well! But we missed Corfu today due to the ship being diverted during the night to aid a boat load of Syrian refugees! Who'd have thought that something so far away would impact on our cruise? That apart cruise is going well. Dubrovnik tomorrow so fingers crossed.

We haven't been to a production show in years. After the first 10 cruises or so, we found them to be pretty much the same. We'll go see a magician from time to time, or a comedian (although we usually walk out because we just don't think they're funny).

This past April we had our first MUTS experience, all our other Princess cruises had been cool weather destinations. Not only did we (surprisingly) enjoy it, a couple nights later we skipped dinner in Anytime and had a sandwich at IC so we could be early to get good seats to see another movie. We'll do the same on our next Caribbean cruise...along with some friends after we raved about it.

Everyone has their own likes and dislikes, no one is wrong. For us, it's just not worth it to try to run from one event to another. We'll do one thing after dinner or sometimes we just go back to our cabin and sit on the balcony. If we can find a good singer at a piano bar...works for us. We don't visit the casino, we don't go to the disco, we don't go to Bingo or art shows or talks. What we do may be boring to the next person, but we have a relaxing cruise with no pressure.

Loved your post because you hit on some great issues. One of the reasons DW and I like being "equal opportunity cruisers" is that we love the variety we get by cruising with many lines. If you cruise with any single mass market line, you quickly realize that they tend to keep their production shows for up to 3 years. But some of the lines do try to have some fun with entertainment. RCI certainly has lots of variety on their big ships (but their cruises are too short for our taste) and even Holland America did a "Stomp- like" show on one of our recent cruises.

But, the usual old "Broadway" musical revues do get a bit old. For us, cruise entertainment heaven is to find ourselves on a long cruise (over a month) with a great piano bar entertainer.

I am considering sailing with Princess, but the idea of MUTS is not appealing to me. What would bother me is constant noise in the outdoor public areas of the ship.

What I want to know is, how far away from the Lido pool area can MUTS be heard? I imagine we would be mostly in the adults only pool near the spa or on the Promenade deck when we were outside -- we really do not spend time around the Lido pools. Would we be able to hear (and be bothered by) MUTS in these other areas?

Is MUTS going 24/7? Is there a movie every evening, so there is never any quiet place on the upper decks after dark?

Thanks to all who can answer these questions.

My wife and I were on the Crown Princess. We were in loungers by the Neptune pool, and we did not hear the MUTS concert playing over the Calypso pool farther aft. Distance is your friend in this regard.

We did hear an assistant Cruise Director on a microphone emcee'ing the MEN'S SEXY LEGS CONTEST for 20 minutes or so at the Neptune Pool.

It wasn't a problem, just wanted to say that Movies Under The Stars (or Sky) is not the only entertainment that would interrupt the 'quiet serenity of a public pool'

We must admit that one of the major things that drove us to Holland America was the lack of constant PA announcements, no MUTS, and no silly pool activities like hairy leg contests. That being said, we are coming back to Princess in the spring with the knowledge that we will need our noise cancelling headphones :)

Seriously? I would have thought a "men's sexy legs" contest would have been more of a Carnival thing. Then again, I have been accused of being a stick-in-the-mud.

quote=sknight;39929183]Anytime Dining to us means Anytime Entertainment. We decide what our entertainment/activity schedule for the evening will be and then plan dining around it, rather than the traditional visa/versa method. It has worked for us for lots of years.

Regarding MUTS, we are not much of a fan, especially the daytime "noise" in place of live music. But Princess executives seem to think highly of it, so for now it is here to stay.

On our trip from LA to Hawaii -That's what we did, we planned our dinner around the entertainment and that worked out perfectly. We actually saw two late night movies - one we had to leave because we were too cold and the other we layered our clothes and enjoyed it all. :)

Get rid of traditional dining. There are a good many passengers who hate the whole idea of traditional dining. This way the problem is solved and all can eat and make the entertainment they want.

Well, we're 3 weeks away from experiencing MUTS for the first time, so I will try to keep an open mind, but I have to say that the comments I've read on MUTS in other threads have left me wondering if we're going to have to exile ourselves to our verandah to escape the noise. More specifically, what I really don't understand is that in our current world, we are all absolutely surrounded by SCREENS: our cell phones, iPods, iPads, e-readers, our workstation PC's, laptops, home computers, and those flat-screen TV's. I'm just not getting why, in the peaceful, rare and unique atmosphere of being at sea on a cruise, people want still another screen, more aural and video digital intrusion into our lives. Just sayin'.

I have to agree with you here. It's one of the reasons I enjoy cruising because it limits the ability to "stay connected" with the outside world. I don't care to see a movie, a show, see the news or watch tv. I have to admit, we did watch The Life of Pi on MUTS one evening and having the night sky above and an occasional light rain, made us feel like we were actually there on that little boat in the middle of the ocean.

I understand that some people like it and some don't, but one of the great things about Princess (other than the new Royal and maybe the Pacific and sister ship) are the many pool options. On a typical Grand class ship, if MUTS is bothering you, go to one of the other five pools (four in some cases). If you go to the Spa pool or the Terrace pool, you aren't going to hear anything. Even the Neptune or Calypso pool next door (depending on the ship) is often free of any noise from MUTS.

It's kind of like someone saying they hate the piano bar entertainment and wish they would do away with it. If you don't like the piano bar, go to one of the other ten bars on the ship (or however many there are)!

My understanding of the new Royal and Regal ships is that there isn't nearly the amount of pool space that they have on the Grand class ships, so this is obviously a draw back to these particular ships. But there are what, nine or ten Grand class ships to choose from? (not to mention the Island and Coral)

Reading the last post makes me wonder. Reviews say that the new Royal has smaller cabins then the Grand Class, smaller balconies, less pool space, etc. Sounds like a step backward with ship design. Are we missing something?
