Crime on cruise lines???

Just curious if anyone has seen or heard of crimes on any cruise ships. For the most part I feel safe but I'm sure something bad happens on the ship especially when there's lots of drinking going on.

Of course! It's a small city! Drinking plays a big part but it isn't the only reason. We've seen people in handcuffs before especially around customs. Drugs, fights, theft... Of course cruise lines don't like to publicize this but what company would make know of their downfalls. Yes you are on vacation but you still have to be aware of your surroundings and what's going on. And of course there is a ton of crime once people step off of the ship into the ports that you don't hear about.

Being that there's so many people on the cruise ship and the ports, you would think people would act right. There's tone of cameras and lots of witnesses everywhere u go. I'm always aware of my surroundings and I follow my wife everywhere.

 

You'd have to be pretty bored to want to fight on a cruise ship.

Twenty+ cruises and I've never witnessed a crime except maybe some very bad pool and/or dining room attire. Not saying it doesn't happen but it's a rare occurrence.

It's a possibility that it's rare but it's also possible that you just haven't seen it yourself and it's possible it happens more often than we think.If you're not there when the crime occurs, who would tell you? How would you find out?? Would the cruise line tell you?

There are those that smuggle rum runners

Or those that maybe smoke in the wrong area

Or those that abandon their kids and let them run around the ship at all hours

That's the only thing I know of personally

 

But there has been Rape, Murder, Theft and and Drug smuggling onboard cruiseships

Well, I'll start my answer with the same premise that I used on your other thread: modern cruise ships are essentially floating cities. Pack your common sense, and look out for your loved ones, just as you would when visiting New York City, LA, or London -- you'll be fine. :cool:

Yup, sometimes criminals cruise just like the rest of us. I was watching a documentary a few weeks ago about a serial killer. Seems just before he was finally caught he went on a cruise out of Galveston. Didn't kill anyone on the cruise, but he could have. That's one reason that I cringe when parents think it's perfectly fine to let their kids roam for hours around the ship with no supervision.

I was on a cruise recently where some kids tried to steal some photos from the gallery; even though the kids were complete jerks to the security guard, he ended up letting them go. I wonder if that happens a lot with 'minor' crimes.

 

One question I have: when someone does something serious, where do they get prosecuted? the next stop? home port?

On our latest Oasis cruise four cruise couples were put into cabin lockdown for domestic situations on the last two sea days. We also heard that some crew had to be spoken to about their actions towards each other.

 

There were also were a number of medical emergencies (Alpha calls) and four people sent off in ambulances in St Thomas. On a sailing over a year and a half ago on Oasis a person died of an aneurism on the jogging track. On the same cruise there was a dine and dash at Johnny Rockets.

 

With 6,000 guests you are bound to get some bad activity. I hasten to think that the security screening helps to reduce the risks of more serious incidents occurring at sea.

 

That still doesn't include theft of items left behind by accident, or worse yet all the money the casino has taken from me;). Cruise ships are floating cities mainly full of happy people, but there are always chances of bad things happening. Just like home or any port of call, you are only as safe as your move.

A cruise is no different from any other vacation spot...crime happens everywhere. You simply need to keep your wits about you, just like you would when shopping at your local mall or downtown area.

 

The bad thing about a cruise is....you are NOT in America, or your home country. Your normal laws and investigative procedures do NOT apply. So...keep your wits about you! It's all you can do. Most people have no problems.

Yes, that was when we were cruising with you - it was in fact my brother in law who was jogging behind the individual and their spouse when it happened early one morning.

 

Very unfortunate when that type of situation occurs. We have been on a number of cruises with A-A-A calls, but fortunately never aware of any crime on board.

 

....and no, that wasn't me with the dine and dash!

I thought if you say my post you would chime in. I didn't think it was my place to give great specifics. I sometimes wonder if it had lasting effects on your BIL. I guess when it is our time we have no choice.

I tried to keep the details generic as well. It was pretty upsetting for him, but he got past it. But as you say when it is our time.....

 

Hope all's well with your family - will miss you again in FLL this March, by a day this time! We did look for you guys in the terminal last March - there were two flights going to Canada from gates next to ours when we arrived.

I committed a crime on the Allure. I took pictures of the Britto Gallery and got screamed at by a crew member. Before that I saw some guy in handcuffs surrounded by 4 security guards. I have no idea what he did.

I think he took pictures in the Coach store.:). Or better yet he tried to steal one of the priceless pieces of art, from the art auction.

Years ago on a Celebrity cruise, my dh and I became acquainted with a woman in the hot tub. She had a young boy with her. It was her first cruise. She was young, good looking and wearing a bikini. Anyway, she stood out a bit compared to other passengers who mostly seemed like couples. She was very sweet, but seemed naïve.

 

After one of the ports we encountered her again. In the hot tub. She proceeded to tell us that she had an unsettling experience. She had gone on the cruise at the invitation of a man she had met not long before, maybe a week. He was very charming and told her she would take her son and her on a cruise. According to her, he was arrested upon trying to board the ship after the port stop b/c he had purchased illegal drugs and tried to bring them on board. We surmised he was using them as a cover, especially the child. In any case, she got a free cruise out of it.
