Great Times on Indy! ~ A Big Review With Lots of Pics!

Recommended Posts

Thanks for taking the time to post this! We are deciding between an Indy 8-night or Allure 7-night in December. Been on both and have some concerns due to some of the recent reviews about the Indy "vibe". I really do love the Indy itinerary and the extra night is such a bonus:)

Was on this cruise, great time, awesome weather after Sunday.

Even the casino was good to me... a Four of a Kind and Straight Flush at Ultimate Texas Hold 'Em, plus a straight flush at 3 card. If you played in the casino, you probably saw me at the UTH table.

Independence of the Seas: January 18, 2014

My wife and I booked this cruise to celebrate our five year anniversary. We were originally booked on the Oasis of the Seas for the 1/18/14 sailing. But we decided to switch when we saw a longer and cheaper cruise on Indy for the same week. The ports of call were also more attractive, so it was an easy decision.

Two friends that cruise with us occasionally decided to come along. We drove down together to Boca Raton the night before our cruise and stayed at the Fairfield Inn right off I-95. The hotel was fairly new and in good shape.

Thanks for the report and the pics, have many good memories on the Independence....K.O....:)

Diamond Plus member in an interior, is this unusual ?

I have an interior booked for may 2014 and reading CC get the impression a lot of frequent sailors seem to look down on interior cruisers as a bit of a lower level passenger. This will be my first RCI cruise and hope I am wrong !!!

Have a fab cruise.

Dave.

Late in the evening we spent some time in the Connoisseurs Club enjoying a few cigars. It's was nice to be back on a ship with a cigar lounge. All of the Radiance and Vision class ships have been stripped of theirs which is a real shame. I also had a nice conversion with "Super Mario", the #1 cruiser in Crown and Anchor. We shot the breeze for awhile about some of the upcoming ships; he's an absolute wealth of knowledge about cruising.

The cigar lounge. Such a nice place to sit and relax with a good cigar and a drink. It's a real shame that RCI feels the need to get rid of them.

Hey Darth,

I'm sailing on the Explorer in June. I believe they have a cigar lounge? Can you purchase cigars there or do you have to bring your own? Also do you have to be a suite or diamond member to get access? Thanks!

Did you ever get the feeling that that Olive was STARING at you?!?!?!? ;) :p :D

I did. :D

That and the creepy Shakespeare in the entryway to the bottom floor of the MDR that looks at you as you walk by.

I don't know that it's unusual, in fact it's very usual for us. We cruise on the cheap, which is how we get to go as often as we do. The room doesn't make much difference to me. Of course I'd like a balcony, but the price is sometimes prohibitive. I'd rather cruise twice in an interior than once in a balcony or suite.

I've never experienced any snobbery, most of the frequent cruisers I've met have also been in a wide range of cabins over the years. Of course there are some that will only travel in certain rooms, but even those folks don't seem too judgmental of others.

I've never been on EX, so I don't know for sure that she still has one. I've heard that they've been removed from a couple of the Voyager class ships. If she does still have one, it'll be forward on deck 5.

The lounge is open to everyone, and they do have a limited selection cigars. I bring my own just because I know that they've been properly kept, and I'm too cheap to pay the ship's high prices.

It doesn't matter where you are on the ship - as long as you're ON the ship! ;)

We took advantage of our new BOGO specialty restaurant coupon and got a reservation at Giovanni's Table. I had eaten at Chops and Samba Grill before, but never Giovanni’s. I had the steak, and we got the family style linguini, gnocchi and ravioli. The meal and desserts were all very good.

We are sailing on the Indy in 2 months and can't wait! It has been a while since we sailed RCCL, so I have a question about the BOGO special coupon you reference above. Is that only for Diamond+ members? We plan to eat at Giovanni's and would love to get a coupon.

Thanks and looking forward to more of your review.

D+ members *do* get a BOGO coupon, but last month on the Independence, they had a first night special for all. ($15 instead of $20 pp)

Unfortunately the coupon is only for D+ and Pinnacle. But as Merion Mom said, they were offering that $15 special on the first night for everyone. There should be a booth set up on the Royal Promenade where you can make reservations.

i agree with room type. we love balcony rooms but only if the price is right.
