Breakaway March 9-16 - MYTHBUSTERS

Just returned from our fabulous Breakaway cruise. Lots of people have been posting great reviews lately for the Breakaway, so I thought I'd do a mythbusters review, and if you have questions, post away. DO NOT CALL ME A CHEERLEADER, please. I tend to see the positives when on vacation.

Myth #1 - Food boring and repetitive - On the buffet, the food is similar for breakfast and lunch each day. On the other hand, you could still eat something different every day because there is a wide selection. On the third hand, if I had one, I don't see that it's any more boring or repetitive than any other NCL ship I've been on. Each day there is one clear and one cream soup. If you want more exciting soup, sit down in Taste or Savour and have lunch. I think what folks have missed is that this is a BIG ship. They still offer all the choices they always have, it seems to me, just not in EVERY venue. You'll still get many types of soup, but not ALL in the garden cafe - they'll be around different venues. The three MDR's have a set menu that repeats - steak, chicken, spaghetti - and then three or four new dishes each day - a pasta, a seafood, one day it was roasted turkey. I ate in MDR every night and I never ate the same thing twice, nor did I find it a struggle to find something I wanted to eat. Most nights, appetizers looked so good husband and kids ordered two, ditto for desserts.

Myth #2 - Service is slow. When we boarded, we went to O'Sheehan's and it took about 15 minutes for our order to be taken but it was delivered quickly after that. One night, we ate in Manhattan. The service was not speedy, but we were in and out in 90 minutes, no reservation, 9 people, which we thought was totally reasonable. Every other night, we ate in Taste or Savour and the service was prompt and cheerful.

Myth #3 - Food is cold. Once again, for whatever reason, when we boarded and chose O'Sheehan's for lunch, the food was cold. Every other time it was hot and very good.

Myth #4 - Desserts are boring. On the buffet - YES, although on the first sea day, I had a chocolate walnut brownie to die for. In the MDR's, we found the desserts to be interesting (e.g. Rhubarb tiramasu) and delicious. Most nights, husbands and kids ordered two desserts.

Myth #5 - More "nickel and dime" feel on the Breakaway. On the contrary, I actually thought it was LESS nickel and dime. Last year on the Dawn it seemed like bingo and deal or no deal announcements were all day every day, but on this ship, I never noticed it was going on. One day, I happened through the atrium and it was like, "Wow, Deal or No Deal, hmm" In other words, you had to be paying attention to your freestyle daily in order to participate, there was no pressure.

Myth #6 - Balconies are small. Okay, that one is partly not a myth. We had an aft balcony and a regular balcony for the kids. The rooms themselves were the same size but the kids' balcony was small. They enjoyed just having the door open and enjoying the breeze, but as far as sitting out there, nope, I don't think so. We on the other hand had an aft balcony and it was HUGE, I mean, HUGE. All nine of us were able to stand on the edge of the balcony to watch NYC fade away. There were two loungers and two regular chairs on there, and you could easily have fit four more chairs - two more loungers and two more regular. It was the nicest balcony I have ever experienced on NCL. 12th floor. But that leads me to Myth #7...

Myth #7 - Noise from H2O-Spice will go on all night long and keep you from sleeping with your balcony door open. Probably not a myth. It's true they play dance music and it's true you can hear it in your room until they stop. If you're a night person who will be going out to bars etc., until midnight, this won't bother you. It didn't bother us, but I can definitely see it would bother some people. If you like to turn in early, you may want to book an aft balcony further down, which leads to Myth #8....

Myth #8 - If you book a lower aft balcony, people from the upper balconies can "see" you. Nope. Only if you are leaning out over the edge of your balcony could the upper balconies see you. If you're lounging on your chair, etc., nobody can see you. Only can see the railings below. Balconies are quite shaded also, which I liked, but if you're a sun worshipper, you might find them too shady. To sum up, we LOVED our aft balcony.

Myth #9 - The crew is not as "friendly" and they hate their jobs - Once again, we found the opposite to be true. We found the entertainment staff to be amazing - very high energy with lots of fun things to do like the 70's and 80's dance. The washy washy folks now have a guitar and tambourine and my husband played guitar with them three or four days at lunch. Everyone was smiling and happy. We met a lot of interesting staff, people who were married to someone else on board, etc. It seemed to me that there were a lot more options on the ship, because it was large, for staff to operate in family groups. Anyway, they were all happy and smiling. A special shout out to Philip in the Entourage staff (I should have done vacation hero for him) who my 17 year old thought was amazing and who really made sure the teens had a great time. FORCE your teen to sign up, they'll be so happy they did.

Myth #10 - Don't travel during school holidays. Our cruise was Canadian March Break so there was over 1000 kids from 0 to 17 onboard, but they were polite, well entertained and I really enjoyed them (I'm a teacher). One thing I noticed is that there were WAY fewer college "spring breakers" - aka drunk 21 year olds. There were some, but they were also well mannered and they were far overshadowed by families with kids, like ours. Everyone was having an amazing time. Usually when we travel at this time of year, you can't get in a hot tub because of all these folks, but for whatever reason, the age and interests of the PAX seemed very balanced on this cruise.

Myth #11 - The coffee sucks - Actually, NCL has done something to improve their coffee, because it was much better than usual - or maybe I just REALLY needed a vacation.

Myth #12 - Rock of Ages is inappropriate and not good - Rock of ages is HILARIOUS. It does have a slow start - for the first 15 minutes, I couldn't figure out what was going on. I guess I live in a vacuum, I didn't realize it was tongue in cheek, but once I did, I had a hoot.

Myth #13 - Second city boring and repetitive - We went to three shows and they were all good. The 18+ show definitely the best, IMHO. Our kids, ranging in age from 15 to 18, all were admitted. Our 13 year old, who was small for his age, watched Batman in the atrium instead.....

Myth #14 - The atrium is too small. Depends what your idea of too small is. There always seemed to be plenty of seating for movies. It got crowded for Deal or No Deal and I am not too sure why they don't have more of that kind of stuff in the theatre....

Myth #15 - It's a PITA to book shows ahead. Yep, it is. I really didn't like the idea of having to plan all that stuff out until I realized, you really don't have to. If you want to go somewhere, just go, there'll be seats available. Once that pressure is off, it goes much more smoothly. The only thing you SHOULD book tix for is second city, because you want to be at the front so you can see, the sightlines in headliners are not good at all. Of course, if you want to go to pay venues, you'll have to book, but that's not new to Breakaway. I found the entertainment staff at these venues to be cheerful and patient, because a lot of people want to get in without reservations, etc., and they cheerfully organize people into a couple of lines and jolly them along.

Myth #16 - There are too many line ups. We did not find this, we just planned ahead. The kids went on the ropes course every day, but they lined up at 9:30 for the 10:00 opening, did their thing and were done. Yep, I think if you wandered into line at 10:30, you would have to wait awhile, but hey, grab a coffee and a cinnamon bun, you're on vacation. I was delighted by the number of different areas to lounge on the ship. There are big comfy wicker chairs and beds for two people forward on 16. There is Vibe, which never seemed crowded - do all those people who buy the passes even use them? There are many places to lounge along the waterfront - again, comfy wicker chairs. There was NO shortage of loungers and no lounger wars, I found. The pool is small, but the kids just want to water slide anyway, and we found there to be no lineups for that at all. I felt like this ship had many more places and opportunities to lounge than any other ship I'd been on, and many different places to hang out. I can't say enough about how much this impressed me.

Myth #17 - The ship is not really designed for people with mobility issues - crowded elevators, narrow hallways. I would have to agree with that. Often, people in wheelchairs or scooters adopted the strategy of going down in an elevator first, so they could then go up. NCL could address this by installing a handicapped elevator that is only activated by a key card for those folks. I felt terrible for those folks and if I had those issues, I would pick another ship, for sure. NCL didn't think that one through, especially with aging poplulation. I think it's an easy fix. If you did not have mobility challenges, the elevators were not as bad as reported on the boards, to me, and you could always walk up or down a couple. We were on 12 aft, so just walked up the 3 floors to 15 aft Garden Cafe or down six flights for dinner in Taste or Savour.

Myth #18 - Embarkation and Debarkation are terrible - Because we were with friends, we got there much later than we usually do - about 11:30. It was crowded getting on, no doubt about it, but I think we completed the whole process in about 45 minutes. As afar as getting off, we walked off with luggage and were in our car at 7:34 am (we had to drive home to Ontario, so wanted an early start). I would solve this by showing up at 10 am like usual...

Myth #19 - Smoke smell in casino will ruin your cruise. I gotta say, that was a bad design idea. You CAN smell the smoke from the casino when you are in the rotunda that extends through floors six, seven and eight. I don't think you can smell it throughout the ship and I don't think it will ruin your cruise. If you are severely allergic, you might consider another ship. If you're not severely allergic, a non smoker, I would consider it a minor annoyance, and something that makes you shake your head about who designed that, but nothing more.

Things we did not do .... there are many. When we travel as a couple, we do some extra things but when we have kids, just being on the ship is supposed to be enough. So we did NOT do extra charge dining, including cirque du soleil, which we are saving for next time we go in August. We also want to do Presumed Murdered at that time too. We booked jetskis but it was too windy to use them on GSC, so snorkelled instead. This was our first time to GSC and it was heavenly, amazing to swim in the ocean. Take Jay-Z's advice and walk all the way to the far end, very un-crowded, you'll have a bbq and drink station practically to yourself and you can just relax....

We had a great time and if you've booked Breakaway, you will too. I was very trepeditious about our trip after having read the reviews, but I was pleasantly surprised - it might even be my best cruise ever! Enjoy!

Re: Myth #10 Were there REALLY over 1,000 kids on board or are you exagerating?

We were told by Philip there were 480 teens between ages of 13 and 17, so I just guestimated that a similar number between 0 and 12 would be present?

Great info thanks. Sounded very honest and true.

Loved your idea of a handicap elevator. I went on a cruise (RCCL) 2 years ago with a broken foot and I was amazed at how rude people were. I was on a knee scooter and people who push and crowd me to ride one floor.

OH I so wanted to tell them I would give anything to walk up one flight of stairs. My kids and DH would take the stairs and and the usually beat me.

We just returned from this cruise also. It was our first cruise on Norwegian, we had only sailed Celebrity before. We had a fabulous time and have to say that overall we thought it was better than Celebrity.

Prior to the cruise I had worries over how the more liberal smoking policy would affect us. I guess we were lucky because we only smelled smoke once on our balcony. I did not like the casino or the area around it because of the smoky smell. We are not big gamblers but it did stop a friend who travelled with us from entering several tournaments. That was really the only negative thing on the cruise. We knew it was the ship's policy before we sailed so we

just avoided those areas.

The positives were the entertainment which we felt was far superior to Celebrity's. The performers, the costumes, the sound of the music, all were so much better. We loved the Second City improv shows, the music in the Manhattan room. The food in the main dining rooms just amazed me. At best it was excellent and at worst very good. The service is maybe not quite as polished as Celebrity's but the food blew them away. We did not eat in any specialty restaurants. We found the buffet comparable to Celebrity's.

Although the cruise was full and there were lots of children on board we rarely found it crowded, maybe when the shows came out when it was difficult to get an elevator. I rode the elevators a lot as I have difficulty with even one flight of stairs and I rarely had to wait for a long time to get on one. We had a spa balcony so were able to use the Spa Therapy area which was fabulous, again it was never crowded, we were always able to get a sun bed even on sea days.

We did wonder before we went on this cruise whether it would be "us", particularly after some of the terrible reviews we read. We booked it only 2 weeks before we sailed. We had looked at Celebrity cruises out of Florida but the airfare was so expensive, so the departure from NYC was very tempting as we live in Massachusetts. We are pretty quiet people, don't like noise and crowds and we were worried it would be too noisy and busy for us. However I have to say the cruise was definitely "us", we had a great time and will be sailing on Norwegian again.

  • 4 weeks later...

The smoke thing,

is it just the stale air of smoke

or actual smoke from smokers you can smell?

is there a way to walk around the ship without going through the casino for instance?

I'm travelling with a 3 yr old and I personally don't mind (a cigar here and there never killed me either) but i never do it anywhere near my kids and i wouldn't want them breathing in any actual smoke.

OP - DH and I are on the May 11 BA to Bermuda. I noticed that you mentioned "Presumed Murdered", and I had read somewhere something about murder mysteries put on by the Second City Troupe. Do you know if these are on all BA cruises? I do not see anything listed in the entertainment section of items that can be booked...

When we sailed the Jewel a couple years ago there was nine of us sailing together. Every time we had to go up or down decks I would take the stairs and the rest of the family would take the elevator. I beat them every single time. I think the wait for elevators is something that happens on all cruise ships. At least every ship I have been on. The best part is I only gained one pound on that cruise and I ate everything I wanted.

It's actual smoke, not just stale air. We were on this cruise in an aft suite and we avoided it by accessing 6-7-8 from the forward stairs/elevator rather than aft. I made the mistake of trying to get to the photo area from the aft and had to walk right through the casino area, I'm sensitive to smoke and it was not comfortable.

As long as you make a conscious effort, you can avoid the problem areas. Our children never walked through this area.
