Johnny Rockets now $5.95?

Recommended Posts

I said it once and I will say it again and I mean no offense whatsoever. Isnt just the same for someone to tell you if you dont like reading why people are upset, dont read it? Its simple :)

Are people just suppose to roll over on their back and take all the price hikes at the store and gasoline price soarage and not voice any displeasure whatsoever? Thats what government wants us to do for sure :)

Johnny Rockets has went from included to 5.95. In how many years, I dont know but Im sure someone here does. Thats a pretty big hike. Certainly since their excuse for charging in the first place is to keep kids from hanging out there all the time and taking up all the spaces.

Gas, food, housing, clothes etc has gone up too! U still drive don't u? I don't blame them for raising the price especially if people are still going to buy it. You can voice ur opinion but the price will still be $5.95 today, tomorrow and when I cruise next month!

I'm not sure why people are so upset with cost hikes. Have you been to a grocery store lately. The cruise line is in business, and therefore must continue tweak the bottom line. Either you will see hikes in the for fee options or you will pay a higher fare. A business is in it for profit, it is not a charity.

As far as Johnny Rockets is concerned, we usually go at least once on a cruise so we can have something different. It's a choice we make willingly. If you don't want to pay the cost, don't go. Simple!!!

I have been to Johnny Rockets 4 times; three on land and once on Navigator, back in 2004. The ambiance is interesting, but atmosphere only goes so far. The hamburgers we had at the land based diners, were good because we could get them cooked the way we liked them (medium/rare) and the shake was outstanding. On the ship, they would not cook the hamburger to our liking. They told us they could not cook it and still have it 'pink' on the inside -- it was company policy. After further review, when we got home, that is NOT the corporate policy of Johnny Rockets. It surely is not the policy of Royal, because I get my steaks in other places on board, cooked to my liking.

I love their shakes, but that is it for me. I make use of the BOGO shake offer for sure, and if I want another one while on board, pay for it as well.

I have no issue with companies changing their pricing structure. Businesses are in it to make a profit. I believe what lots of people dislike is 'how' some things get done....the confusion that surrounds the changes -- and the appearance that some of their messages don't fit well with other messages that the corporation puts out.

To counter your point, I have changed supermarkets and gas companies over time, and sometimes it has less to do with $$ than it has to do with their overall message and how they conduct business in general.

Thats what stings even worse. Especially since a lot people here consider Carnival to be a subpar cruise line or the "Walmart" of cruising.. Even sailing on their oldest ship at the time, I dont believe that is true.

I hear Guys burgers are really good. I watched his family cruise on Breeze on tv and they were making them. They looked delicious.

They do look great. The menu is kept fairly simple really; much less options than JR's. And making it more of a counter service type venue than having a waitstaff. Which I am totally fine with both because it does give a free option for a quality burger on board.

I'm not sure how long it will stay Free on Carnival. They are very popular. I get that part of the $5.95 charge on Royal pays for "the experience". Okay. And that the "experience" is missing at Guy's, but there's no doubt I'd give up the "experience" to have the burger included. I would not be surprised if Guys starts charging soon though.

HAL is in the process of rolling out a new pool deck burger grill called the Dive In that is getting good reviews as well, no upcharge.

I don't think $5.95 is a lot of money in general, and in the context of a cruise vacation it really is not a lot at all. But it still irks a bit to pass up many other food options in order to PAY for a burger and fries. It would irk me on any line. I understand rising costs and a need to make profit. I don't begrudge corporate to turn a profit and maintain cash flow. But the point is that I will pay for high quality/unique options on an RCI ship (Chops, Izumi's, etc...) but I won't pay for stuff I can get anywhere on land and usually pretty close fascimile on board for free (JR's, Ben and Jerry's, Starbucks).

That said, I am glad that other people are happy to have those options. The money they spend keeps the cruise line going. I have no intention of boarding a ship to spend $0, but I will spend on quality, not on fast food.

It's too bad JR's takes up so much space onboard and has the size menu it does. If it was counter service with a limited menu perhaps it could be free like Guys currently is?

Not really sure the point you are trying to make. Im also not sure what part of "I have no problem with the 5.95 charge" you didnt get that I posted. Driving is pretty much a necessity. An upcharge burger on a cruiseline that offers so much other food included, not so much. Most of the time I passed by JRs on Freedom it was like a morgue. Keep rasing the price and it might get worse.

Just because you dont blame them doesnt mean others wont though. I guarantee if enough people raise hades about it, they will reconsider too.

Enjoy your cruise next month :)

I never tried it before...We don't have J Rockets here in Portugal, so I would like to try it. What is included in the menu?

Last year we were aboard carnival Breeze (1st Carnival cruise) and the Guys Burguers were "to die for"...we still speak about it!:)

There is a JR in the Niagara Falls(Ontario) Casino Mall.

There are also a couple in Toronto, I think.

At least you have cheaper gas out west :)

That's pretty far for a burger run haha.

Good point. The "supposed" reason for charging in the first place had nothing to do with cost but to keep the kids from hanging out in there. I guess it takes more money to to keep the kids out these days. Unless, of course, the reason that was put forth for instituting a charge in the first place was all a cover for the real reason. Gee, could RCI really have dupped everyone like that?;)

Its a good thing you weren't sailing when JR's used to be included in the cruise fare. Your coupon would have been worthless then.;)

Oh I do remember when it was included. And when the price went up to $3.95, then $4.95. I only commented that now the value of the coupons is more and the perks I have are more valuable.

I go for the kids since they enjoy it. We used to have one not too far away, but that one closed so it's a hassle to find one. We have several Smashburgers and 5 Guys nearby, but I'd so much rather have an In and Out near me. It almost makes paying for airfare to California to see my family worth it if I can have one of those LOL!

I've also been back on a decent diet recently (already lost 17 lbs) and as much as I like it, fatty burgers, fries and onion rings are not on the list of approved foods. So I might give the coupons to the kids and have my mom take them or I'll have the grilled chicken and have to leave everything else off (which might not be physically possible if you know what I mean LOL).

I think I'd rather go off my diet for a beef on Wek from the Park Cafe, as that is really something I simply cannot get in NJ (although I used to be lucky enough to "have" to go to Buffalo when my sister and BIL, and then my niece, were in college there) so I might be willing to splurge on that. But when I have Smashburger and 5 Guys nearby, I don't think I'll waste the empty calories on JR.

Hi all,

I asked Royal's PR department about the increase to clear things up. Looks like it's true, and it's effective across all ships that have it. Here's their statement:

Royal Caribbean International Statement:

Royal Caribbean International is adjusting the cover charge for the Johnny Rockets aboard its 11 ships from $4.95 to $5.95 per guest. The new cover charge will take effect immediately on ships with the restaurant and is the first increase in five years. The $5.95, per guest, cover charge includes food ordered from the menu and is not applicable if guests only order beverages. Soft drinks, bottled water, milk shakes and other beverages are offered at current menu prices and will remain unchanged. Johnny Rockets is available aboard Allure of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas, Independence of the Seas, Liberty of the Seas, Freedom of the Seas, Mariner of the Seas, Navigator of the Seas, Adventure of the Seas, Explorer of the Seas, Voyager of the Seas, and Majesty of the Seas.

Yes I have heard Guys Burgers on Carnival are quite good. Looking at Breeze cruises to maybe give it a try. I thought JR was quite good on Freedom last year. Though we don't have JR in Canada so maybe that first one always tastes better, who knows.

I sailed Carnival Liberty right after it got the Fun Ship 2.0 enhancements and ate three Guy's burgers in one sitting. They were absolutely delicious, but unless you want to spend the rest of the day curled in the fetal position in your cabin, I'd strongly advise against eating more than one per meal. :)
