Perceptions?

According to my dental hygienist, her husband refuses to go on a cruise because he is worried about undiscovered sea monsters that may be lurking in the oceans. She swears he's dead serious.

To make an aluminum foil helmet, first start with a roll of aluminum foil...:D

This is the argument I hear the most. Second biggest complaint is feeling trapped.

Funny, cruising is when I feel the most at ease, looking at the sea and not seeing land.

To each his own.

My dad and all of my brothers were professional mariners (Navy and merchant marines). I too feel at ease when on the ocean. I never sleep better than when I'm on a ship. I sometimes think that I missed my calling.

My first cruise was with my mother because my husband refused to go, saying that there is nothing to do on a ship! He stayed home with my two sons.

I sent pictures through to them when I boarded the ship and the kids had a go at him lol! They said if he had of said yes then we all would of been having fun right now.

After I returned and showed them the pictures and he agreed to try cruising :D. Of course I went and booked one straight away lol! Now I am hoping that he will enjoy himself enough to agree to go on another. Fingers crossed ;)

I don't want to be told what to do and when to do it, I don't want to be stuck on a boat with 100's or 1000's of other people, I don't want to be stuck on a boat with no means of escape, it sounds so boring....These were only a few of DH's excuses. I finally wore him down and we met with a cruise specialist who listened to all of his reasons why a cruise would not be a good vacation. She recommended a Southern Caribbean cruise out of San Juan for the port intensive itinerary.

I found Cruise Critic and we had the best roll call who helped me research the ports for wonderful excursions. The weather was perfect, never a cloud in the sky. We LOVED it and had a magical, magnificent cruise.

A February cruise is now our preferred winter break. I think DH's low expectations, the wonderful staff and crew, the beautiful Serenade and Old San Juan hooked him.

I have had conversations with people who seemed reluctant to go on a cruise. When I have asked them why, the answers given tend to be based on misperceptions. The non cruisers that I have spoken with think that cruising is expensive, too regimented, nothing to do except play shuffleboard, don't want to "dress up" on vacation, don't want to be couped up on a ship etc. What are some reasons you have been given for someone not wanting to cruise.

Sounds like some of the reasons RCL is going to DD ;)

Had one friend who said she would never go on a cruise that went through the Bermuda Triangle - said she knows she would disappear! Told her we had been through it many times. Didn't matter - she was adamant!

My Korean War Veteran Dad (Air Force) when asked to take a cruise with us compared it to his one and only cruise from Alaska to Okinawa on board a Navy transport ship. :D He asked 'what the hell' would he do for seven days on a cruise ship. In other war stories, he had to help chop the ice off the decks. That was almost ten years ago and needless to say, he hasn't joined us yet. :o

For years I've been resisting my wife's suggestions to cruise. These were my reasons, and what I now think:

It will be boring - how wrong I was.

The only thing to do is read or look at the ocean - see above.

Everyone's eating all the time - while there are plenty of opportunities to eat not all the food is high caloric, and there are nice exercise facilities available.

There are lots of rude drunks - depends on the cruise line and ship.

The average age is 80 (on HAL) - not true.

I'll get seasick - hasn't happened yet and I don't think it will.

Something will go wrong with the ship - Unfortunately this is always a possibility. But any vacation involves risks.

About ten years ago on a Royal Caribbean cruise out of Cape liberty we dined with a gentleman who told us about his first experience at sea.

During WW2 he spent his time chasing and being chased by German U Boats off the Coast of England. There can be no doubt that this was not the best memory someone could have about being on the open sea.

By the way this was, for him and his lovely wife, cruise number fifty five (55).

I guess there is something more to a modern day cruise on Royal Caribbean than that experienced on a naval destroyer. LOL

I've heard all of the above excuses, and more, and of course most of them are silly.

But, I also will never make a big effort to convince someone to cruise, more than just some positive comments if asked.

Why? We are good friends with a family who wanted to do a 50th anniversary cruise. The husband (75 or so) was adamant about not wanting to cruise for lots of already mentioned reasons, but his wife and children and grandchildren talked and talked and he finally agreed, reluctantly, to go.

Of course, for this once in a lifetime event for landlocked farmers, they took one of the infamous Carnival cruises that lost all power and floated around from some days until the passengers could be gotten off. You can imagine what the family had to put up with from Dad! I felt so sad that their one cruise experience would be so horrible.

The excuse I get is "I don't know how to swim".

My husbands reply to that one is you get in a plane and you can't fly✈️✈️✈️

Funny thing is if the plane comes down where do you think it will be O the sea. I fancy my chances on a ship any day x
