Packing cubes convert

I bought 2 sets of packing cubes for our upcoming cruise... Figured I'd see what all the fuss is about. This weekend, they're expecting major snowstorm in my area, and being that I work in a hospital and I'm on call this weekend I am preparing to stay the weekend. I packed a weekend bag, put my stuff in a medium sized packing cube, my toiletries in a small one, and my bag is so much nicer. I don't have a bunch of stuff floating around my bag. I think I'm a convert.

Can't wait to pack for my cruise in my packing cubes

I think there are specific purposes for packing cubes. I don't need to put everything in a cube but I do love them especially for my panties and socks! I love being able to just unzip my cube and slip the entire thing in a drawer. I also like that my unmentionables aren't touching the inside of the drawer. :D

On my last trip to the US my friend had 3 packing cubes. I had read about them online but was a bit sceptical. Hers worked really great. So I bought some online from an outdoor store. On sale thank you very much. 1 medium in light and dark blue and 2 small in red and grey. Beginning of last week made a quick decision to go away for the weekend. Didn’t want to pack a suitcase as we were just driving to our get away with our friend who is a light packer. So I grabbed my large converse duffle reluctantly With a rounded duffle it would have been hard to find stuff without upending everything. I thought mmm maybe I can use my packing cubes in this. Give them a trial before my cruise. Worked out awesome. Packed myself and hubby into 2 small and 1 medium cubes and then threw in our fleece jackets on top. Hubby was like hey where are my clothes when he went to the shower. I was able to grab a small packing cube threw it at him and said here it’s all in there.

So last night when walking past the same outdoor store I snuck back in when hubby went to get a coffee and bought a few more. Again on sale. Got an extra small in the same red/grey combo, a small and a medium in a blue yellow combo. A lot of cubes for an 8 day cruise. I think even if I don’t use them all ill probably pack the unused ones. Use them for gifts/ clothes/ souvenirs that I buy. Or for my pjs and evening clothes that I will need to keep out after my suitcase is packed and out for collection. That way I can just open my suitcase once I get to airport and throw in my cube or keep it all together in my back pack.

I bought 2, mediums I think, but haven't had the opportunity to use them yet. Want to pick up a few more in various sizes to use for our upcoming cruise. Excited to see how I can get organized with them. I love the idea of using one for our things that we need for our clothes and pjs last night on board to pack in the AM. Definitely gonna use that tip.

Also handy is the Pack-It Garment folder. I use one for shirts, medium size seems to work best.

Use the folders for DH's clothes, usually the medium sized one. We use a Flip Fold, much easier than folding around the plastic form http://www.flipfold.com/ It's the only time I use that thing.

I love packing cubes! I find that the TSA people have an easier time looking through my luggage -- and I can repack more quickly when they're finished. Added bonus -- my lingerie is not scattered about on the counter for public viewing.

I recently ordered a set of 4 packing cubes from Amazon for my cruise next week (2 large and 2 medium). When I opened the package, they seemed really big and flat (and awkward!) - much more so than how I would usually fold my clothes for packing!

Did I simply make a mistake and order the wrong size? Should I have leaned smaller? I can't see trying to neatly pack my clothes in such a large flat cube. I seem to be way more productive folding each of my clothes "types" and stacking them neatly in the suitcase myself.

You May need to find the size that works. For me, the larger ones are good for pants and dresses, I used the medium size for tee shirts. I then repurposed one of those plastic things the bedsheets come in as a cube for our swimwear. It makes the suitcase neater, and less wasted space in the suitcase, but it's not for everyone.

I got a packing cube as a holiday gift and found a use for it on a cruise last week...I always pack my swimwear in a separate bag from my clothing because the chlorine smell is so strong...now I can put in in the cube and into the same luggage as my clothing! The swimwear went in the bottom of the cube and my undergarments went in the top (it has 2 sections).

Glad the cubes are working for everyone! My cruise is too soon to try ordering different cubes now, so I will stick with my old faithful method of packing my swimsuits in a large zip-lock storage bag, my underwear in another, and folding the rest of my clothes and stacking by "type" (tank tops in one pile, pants in another, etc). It has always worked for me in the past and my luggage is always still neat when I open it (probably because I stuff it completely full so no room for shifting items! :) ). I also use zip-locks of varying sizes for my shoes (I have small feet), jewelry, hair accessories, etc!

I will keep my eye out for more appropriate sized packing cubes for future trips!

I pack EVERYTHING in packing cubes or mess bags. There is NOTHING loose in my suitcase (except for shoes in plastic bags or a coat or sweater). I have packing cubes in every shape and size to fit every nook and cranny. Makes packing and unpacking so easy and things stay organized in tiny cabin spaces--no clutter! I find things wrinkle less--use the larger bags for pants and dresses. My favorite bags are the mesh ones from Rick Steves as they expand the most (get them when they are on sale. I used to use ziploc bags but the slipping and sliding around annoyed me--still use them sparingly.

My husband and I will be spending two days in each of three locations before our cruise. I will be packing one large cube for each location, then place the currently needed cube in my carry-on. If you're not particular about color, REI has several Eagle Creek organizers on clearance.

I'm a combination folder and roller. I can do both, either separately or together, in those cubes. I have a large assortment of cubes I've acquired over the years and I just pull out what I think I need for any given trip. I have some eBags cubes I bought last-minute on sale - the large one is too large - 17.5x12.75x3.5 - that almost takes up my entire bag!!

I use an Eagle Creek Spectre bag to put my change of clothes in to stuff in my daypack when I'm going to want to change clothes at my destination (due to TATL flights or major change of climate).

There is no one right way to use those cubes - play with them to see what works best for you!

This thread inspired me to order a set from Amazon, they will be here today. I don't know if I will use them on our March cruise but they will come in handy for several trips we are planning where we will be going from hotel to hotel.

I know everyone has different size needs... I ordered the 2 medium and 2 large Amazon basics set! The large ones were WAY too big - had to send them back! :(

I have packed with cubes and folders for years now and love this packing technique. I noticed today at my local Dillard's they had a Secter Eagle Creek Compression Set and half cube on sale for 50% off with an additional 30% off.

They also had this toiletry bag. I thought it was too small and I have a toiletry bag I like. Not sure of the price but it was under $10.
