Contessa30 Posted February 2, 2016 #1 Share Posted February 2, 2016 We have a European cruise scheduled. We will be traveling for several days before the cruise. We plan on spending some money in the casino on board and are concerned about carrying cash safely before the cruise. Has anyone used travelers checks on board? Were you able to cash the checks in the casino? Thanks!
cb at sea Posted February 2, 2016 #2 Share Posted February 2, 2016 Bring Large bills...much easier to carry. Split it up between the 2 of you. It's really not a big deal...just be aware, especially going thru the airport scanners....one of you goes first...the other lingers back until your carry on stuff has been cleared...then they go thru....yeah, the TSA folks might get testy, but tell them to cram it...YOU are responsible for your stuff...don't let them dictate how fast you go thru! That's the only potential "risk"....be routinely carry cash..it's really not an issue.

Linda the Book Lover Posted February 2, 2016 #4 Share Posted February 2, 2016 Many years ago we had quite of bit of travelers checks and cashed them at guest services. There was never an issue and they even broke down down including $1 and $5 increments. However pre-cruise in Key West a United States Federally Insured Bank refused to cash any of them because they were US American Express Travelers checks:eek: We went to another bank to cash the same $100 worth and they told us no problem. We told them our story and the tellers just looked at each other. We laugh about it all of the time thinking all they had to do was call American Express and verify the checks. GUT2407 Posted February 2, 2016 #5 Share Posted February 2, 2016 Didn't think they even still made traveler's cheques. I remember working in the bank in the 80s and customers standing there for the best part of an hour signing them.

Man am I OLD[emoji88] That would be interesting...it's Karl Malden and he is deceased. Though with all of the great technology such as Michael Jackson on stage. Anything can be "digitally resurrected" LOL:D
TruckerDave Posted February 2, 2016 #8 Share Posted February 2, 2016 Why bother? Just use your credit card and take advances on your card on board. Then just take the money you were going to use for the checks and pay the cc off when you get home. Much easier than especially if you have a chip/pin card when traveling. don't-use-real-name Posted February 2, 2016 #9 Share Posted February 2, 2016 Travelers Checks are great way to carry lots of money with no loss potential. Remember to buy them from your local bank or affinity credit union without service charge. Some places have a surcharge to purchase travelers checks - not too bad at $1 per 100 beats the ATM rate at $3-5. When cashing the TC on board - there maybe a limitation on how many/much can be cashed at one time. But NO service charge - great ! And Yes NCL will remit the proceeds down to even $1 bills - or the casino when open will be able to help. But in this age of plastic money sadly it is hard to find a source for TCs and moving money electronically is so easy by phone be it a smart or dumb one. And don't forget you computer laptop or tablet ! The only foreseen difficulty in using TCs is use in a foreign country with currency exchange and cashing fees but you get that with Credit Cards too. The difficulty of TC's in foreign countries is actually getting someone to take them. Advantage of using an ATM is you get the official rate of exchange. Also with so many credit cards having no foreign exchange fees these days TC's are a dying thing.
FreestyleNovice Posted February 2, 2016 #11 Share Posted February 2, 2016 What about buying OBC from MyNCL in advance? Or is there a fee to transfer OBC to your casino credit?
