Princess charging for room service?

Please tell me it's a mistake.

Just got a brochure from Princess

Under the heading

Additional Extras Available for Purchase

First item

24 hour Room Service.

A $3 pizza delivery charge is the only time I've paid a room service fee...was this brochure specific to those of you Downunder & maybe on cruises there?

I rechecked the Princess USA website which states "Guests may call for personal complimentary Room Service at any time of the day or night".

It is sort of specific to Aussies but includes non Aussie cruises.

Under the same heading are things like

Bars

Spa

Casino

Virtual golf

Art

Scholarship @ sea (which I've never been charged for)

Shops

Internet

So maybe just put there to cover the pizza.

A few Scholarship @ Sea activities do have a charge (Ceramic's Class). But I've yet to be on a ship where they offer this one.

Check the fine print. I think it says "some" may have a charge. IF that is the case, yes, for the Pizza.

But can't be for sure because it may be something for Australian cruises only.

Maybe it is to cover the pizza charge ($3 per delivery & not per pizza)...good question but I'm skeptical that you'll get a good answer & calling Princess may or may not provide you with an accurate answer.

I don't use Facebook but have read CC posts about receiving replies to FB inquiries so that might be an option to get an accurate answer.

So maybe they just lumped it in there because not EVERYTHING is free.

Certainly have heard any reports of anyone being charged and I expect someone would be screaming.

And there are special things you can order for a fee such as shrimp cocktail, guacamole and chips, cheese trays. They have to be ordered several hours in advance.

This is probably why room service is listed under the "Available for Purchase" category.

And here I was feeling like the only person left who doesn't have any interest in Facebook.

My wife occasionally uses FB but I have too many security concerns about all of the personal information shared on FB. I use technology but not social media such as FB & Twitter which is my personal preference.

When the earlier question was raised whether there was now a fee for room service, someone replied back that the tip might be considered a fee as it's "extra".

I thought that even for room service, a tip was automatically charged (like for alcoholic beverages, sodas, etc.) though no tip for the "free" food.

Is this correct or do we need to add an extra optional tip when they deliver room service? Please advise.

We tip on the heavier side but wanted to check was the room service tipping policy is if anyone knows. Many thanks!:)

I've not sailed Princess yet, but every other cruise line I've been on there is no automatic tip added for room service, except for the "charged" items you mentioned...if that's all you ordered then no additional tip is needed...if you only order Free Food Items it's customary to tip the person who delivers the food a couple dollars....some lines...like RCI have a late night service charge added between midnight & 5 am...which I've been told goes to the delivery person...so no additional tip needed in that case...

Tipping is not automatically added to the bill. You may write in the tip on the order chit or hand the delivery person cash. I do the cash route. That way, I know they get it directly in his/her hand.

And they are worth every penny. Done it a few times and if you are ordering it for 2 people unless you are a real pig you cannot eat it all yourself. It is designed for around 6 people. It is very inexpensive for what you get.

Aren't these are the same items you get for FREE in the Platinum/Elite lounge every night?:)

Possibly but I prefer to spend my before dinner time doing other things then heading to a bar for a discounted drink and some snacks I probably don't really care about. I would much rather be leaning on my balcony and watching the wake and waves. Honestly I have never taken the time to go. I much prefer spending time with my DH alone in our cabin just enjoying cruising.

Well, sometimes. The selection varies. We go to the lounge to meet with friends (new and old) and enjoy the views, so the snacks aren't that much of a draw. I guess if I wanted to sit on my balcony and eat snacks, room service would be an option.

See, in my case I am either sailing with a bunch of family/friends or just my DH (and maybe grandkids). I don't need to meet anyone new. I couldn't care less about that. If I go, it is with DH and for me he is the only one that matters.

It could also make a difference in the amount of cruises we have been on. The more we cruise the less we see shows and get "out and about". In the early days we would be front and center but not so much now. Now, sitting with DH while he does nothing means more to me. Of course we are newlyweds, we have only been married for a while ... 40 years.

The food in our cabin is not food relevant. It is the enjoyment. I gladly pay for that enjoyment.

I too am a cash person when it comes to tipping. I never add it to my CC bill at restaurants, etc. as I feel it's much better to hand over a cash tip.

How much do you generally tip the room service person on Princess for say bringing breakfast in the morning?
