Drinking Water

Depends where you are and what ship you are on. NCL (like all other cruise lines) bunkers water in port as much as possible. They use water from the municipal water systems in the ports. There are some ships that bunker 100% of their water (i.e. don't make any on board through distillation or reverse osmosis). Most will be a combination of port water and manufactured water.

The water coming out of your bathroom faucet is the same as in the buffet (although they would have a filter on the buffet water dispenser to reduce build-up in the dispenser).

If you have a casino drinks card, bottled water is free. Otherwise, it is cheaper to buy a 24-pack of 1 liter bottles.

6-pack (1-liter bottles) $22.95

12-pack (1-liter bottles) $39.95

18-pack (1-liter bottles) $49.95

24-pack (1-liter bottles) $59.95

Just looked at the water pricing for our Dawn cruise in January

6-pack (1-liter bottles) $$27.08

12-pack (1-liter bottles) $47.14

18-pack (1-liter bottles) $58.94

24-pack (1-liter bottles) $70.74

Everyone has their own thing. I personally think the water on the ship tastes bad. Additional filtering (e.g., with the Brita bottles) doesn't help. To me, it's not the chlorine that's the problem. If anything, it's that it is so OVERfiltered to make it potable that it just tastes ... dead.

Since I mostly drink plain water, I buy the bottles. Aquafina would not be my bottled water of choice, but to me, it's preferable to drinking the ship's water.

YMMV.

Anyone since the water policy has changed ??? Recent cruisers that have received complimentary water in the casino with their card? I sailed on the Jade last year and the complimentary water bottles in the casino were little bottles that were not the Aqua Fina bottles.

A few simple questions were asked since the NCL water policy changed via Mr. Del Rio who drinks whatever he wants.

Does the ship only offer, for PAYMENT, Aquafina?

Does the Casino offer smaller bottles?

Is Aquafina the ONLY water that is allowed to be purchased on the ship?

Is there another brand such as Aqua Panna..... which is Sodium free.

Unless you KNOW....... please skip the comments..... as some people do not want anything BUT sodium free bottled water.

In some ports particularly in the USA, the water on the ship is actually local tap water that is pumped into the ship's tanks by truck, the ship's do this as it works out cheaper than making their own water on board

Not really; they have to sequester the port water and test it, and then blend it with the other water they are making the first 24 - 48 hours that the bunkered water is sequestered.

All of the water, port water and water made on board from sea water, is then chlorinated continuously and continuously circulated from the tank, throughout the ship's plumbing, and back to the tank. At a point the furthest from the tank they have a sensor to measure the chlorine level and then adjust the amount of chlorine to keep it to the level they are mandated to keep (.05 ppm, I think, but PKCheng can chime in here with the correct level if he's reading this).

I think the feet swelling issues people report are either psychosomatic or due to a reaction to the chlorine. My community quit using chlorine several years ago so I can really smell and taste it now.

Can you substantiate your claim about FDR drinking whatever he wants? Please provide evidence.

We purchase San Pellegrino water on board.

The Casino bar sells the same water that is sold in every bar on the ship, Aquafina. The Casino does not offer any "free" water. If you have a casino drink card, you can order a bottle of Aquafina which will be comped by using your drinks card.

Most NCL ships (like every other cruise line) bunker water while in ports. There are ships like the Sky that bunker 100% of their fresh water onboard (they do not run their evaporators or reverse osmosis water systems).

I rest my case.

I and others ASKED about the recent sailings.

NOT from those who sailed months ago and don't know the "current" policy or even IF the ship carry's Aqua Panna.

I just sailed the Jade and the 1 liter bottles in my cabin and also purchased when at dinners was not Aquafina and don't think it was Aqua Panna. I'm sorry I don't remember the brand name. This was end of season med.

Sorry; I was curious as to what brand so looked at my pics and saw that the water we had on board the Jade 9/24-10/8/16 was San Benedetto.

Psychosomatic? I never thought twice about ship water until the cruise where I drank a lot every day and my ankles swelled to the point where I lost mobility.

I went back to back from NCL to Celebrity. I had a drink package on Celebrity and drank only bottled water. My feet were back to normal within 2-3 days and I had no further problems.

Yes. I have been on 6 NCL cruises this year. The most recent in September. Now that's about 7 weeks ago. Sorry if that is not current enough. And I am sorry if over a dozen NCL cruises over the past two years does not provide me with sufficient familiarity with this cruise line. I answered most of your comments and questions.

Never seen Aqua Panna,,,, but have never specifically looked for it.

fshagen is correct that whenever water is bunkered from shore, it must be kept segregated (the Sky has 8 potable water tanks) and not used until a coliform bacteria test comes back negative, and this takes 18-24 hours in an autoclave to do. So, the Sky will always have one or two tanks left over from the previous voyage to use for the first day of the new voyage. However, the water bunkered does not need to be blended with any water produced onboard, but it might end up that way due to operational practices.

NCL has a number of expensive, premium still waters and mineral waters that come in glass bottles. I think the posts about "aqua panna" - which doesn't exist - are really about Acqua Panna, a premium mineral water.

I don't care how many cruises you claim to have been on.

I don't list my cruises and didn't have a need to ask for certain information, UNTIL Del Rio changed a policy on of all things .....WATER!

When in the dining room, you are offered ....for a price....several kinds of bottled water.

I ask for information about what brand of water..... is for sale.

If you don't know, then don't post.

I want knowledge from those who "KNOW" what kind of WATER is SOLD at the table.

It's not what you say, it's how you say it. There's absolutely no reason to be rude. Maybe your particular question didn't get answered yet, but people are sharing information related to the topic of water, and I'm sure others find the answers helpful.

I've done one cruise since the bottled water carry on ban. The Getaway's water didn't taste bad to me. I brought two empty 32 ounce water bottles on board and had my steward clear out the fridge. I also brought packets of Crystal light. I had zero issues with the water on board. The dining room and bar also served water that seemed fine to me too.

It is not considered RUDE to ask a question yet be told by those who don't know that I should not be concerned and accept the fact.

We started out with the Great Norway and have been on many ships besides the NCL line. This paid for cruise will be the last and all because of WATER.

Water means something to me. Enough to rid myself from cruising the lines of CEOs like Del Rio who doesn't care for his passengers.

3 pages yet not one answer.

Now that our $30 million man is in charge and can drink anything he pleases, I would like to know what brand of water is offered for a PRICE at the restaurants.

NOT the horrible Aquafina and it's after taste.

It's a simple question when the waiter comes around and asks if you are interested in purchasing a glass of WATER. I would happily pay for the entire bottle as long as it wasn't Aquafina.

Your ship is filled with 100 different beers and dozens of brands of liquor.

Water drinkers who NEED water for their health, are left so far in the cold as I can find out...... with ONE brand.

I will go, as it's paid, I will be treated as a criminal when bringing a bottle of WATER on board, and I will quit NCL.

It's the straw.

I still have some standards for water as others have for their liquor or wine.

On our cruise on the Pearl in September, San Pellegrino and Perrier were also available for purchase in the bars and restaurants.

all this talk about water reminded me that i never got email from NCL about the water ban before my trip.

Neither did we. Policy went effect mid-July, a few weeks before our final payment. We were not notified. Our cruise sailed on October 30, still no notification. Luckily we aren't people who bring water or soda aboard.

I was on the Jade last week where someone at our table answered yes at dinner when asked if they wanted mineral water. I didn't notice the brand.

But at all our meals diners were only offered choice of bottled mineral water or tap water. No bottled water was offered.

The bottled water sold on the ship is Aquafina. If there were other brands, I didn't see them. I guess one could ask at dinner to buy bottled water that is not mineral water. But it wasn't offered at any of our meals in dining room -- or in specialty restaurants either.

We were on the Jade first 12 days of this month. The only question the waiter asked about water was whether we wanted mineral water or tap water. There was a charge for the mineral water. No waiter asked about purchasing any other kind of bottled water.

Experience evidently varies from ship to ship.
