After you have boarded, you will have to establish a logon and password to use the WiFi. The use of the internal website is free but any access to outside websites has a charge. Depending on the ship, it is really nice to use.

Welcome to Cruise Critic!

As others have posted it's unnecessary to download any app to use Princess@Sea & here's a link to the Princess webpage about this informative free onboard system.

No app needed.

As stated all you need to do once onboard is log on.

Newbie to Princess and it just keeps getting better.:D I love that we can text each other so that we don't have to be joined at the hip (even though we pretty much are even after 36 years we still love each other's company). :)

Be aware that there is no sound or vibration notice of a newly received message. The recipient must check for a new text now and then to see if one has arrived.

Still happy but why wouldn't there be either? Maybe we will have to set up alarm (vibration) to remind us to look... since we are having too much fun.;)

Like not using a web page, and instead, say, an app with push notification? ;)

What a concept... Normally an easy thing to do but I think it was "Pablo" on another thread that pointed out Princess is using Drupal for everything.

Messaging alerts would be easy if everyone was connected to the internet but they need it to work intranet. More of a challenge with Drupal. Each ship would have to handle the messaging with a local server. Of course this could be done but more difficult than just creating a simple messaging app.

I have my doubts but if it's not coming soon - ...hey Princess, how about letting Apple iMessage text go through (without photo/video) to the internet without logging on... Wouldn't consume that much bandwidth, solves the messaging alerts on board and as a perk allows passengers to stay connected with others back home.

Princess has been left in the dust by RCCL when it comes to connectivity.

I leave it to the experts, in that case. One can but hope they will find a solution, because a messaging service with no notification isn't really a messaging service.

I was waiting to disembark royal this morning, and was

playing with this.

As I have mentioned before, there are notifications,

but only when using the no longer available app,

and only when connected to the INTERNET.

I had a laptop connected to ship intranet, which I was using

to send message to Mrs. Pablo's messenger ID

I had a phone connected to the cell network / internet in

ft. lauderdale. Every time I sent a message from the laptop,

I got a notification on the phone.

It uses Drupal, and Google Cloud Messaging for notifications.

Unfortunately, this does not work if you are connected to only

the princess intranet, as most people would be at sea.

As princess dropped the app, it is really moot.

On the other hand, at least on royal, they have fixed the

google captive portal issue by allowing a few google URLs,

to pass through their captive portal.

This allows most android 5 and later phones to stay

connected. About the only place on the ship that I

lost my wifi connection was in the elevator.

This makes me more interested in working

on a browser extension to handle notifications.

And, for the folks who cry that they will be disturbed by notifications...

I was using a custom app to check for messages and make

notifications; in the atrium and in the lido, there was so

much ambient noise, I could barely hear a chime

with a phone in my pocket at the highest volume.

I wish the complainers would get on princess about the high

ambient noise levels!

So far I have also lost it in the dinning rooms. Actually a good thing IMHO. People have to do something else other than play with their devices during meal time. I like it. Just sayin'. :D YMMV

Fine wifi in the dining rooms on royal.

How else can you see the purchase of a drink posted

to your folio before the drink is even delivered?

They were blocking crew wifi there though.

I can't imagine why...

Good info Pablo.

Blocking based on login ID? Why go to the trouble?

Passenger WiFi and Crew Wifi are different SSIDs

(the name you see on your phone when you connect to Wifi,

like 'Royal-Princess') The crew SSID is hidden, so you have

to know to look for it.

Anyway, it is a work rule violation for crew to use an electronic

device whilst on duty. From time to time, you would see crew

checking their phones, even on duty.

On Royal, they have simply removed the crew wi-fi from many

of the access points, effectively preventing crew from using

wi-fi on duty.

We were on the same trip. Did you notice the increase in volume in both the Piazza and show lounge? They both were over 100 db most of the time.

DEAFENING.

While they do have a rule for the crew not use their phones while on duty at least 8 out of 10 carry them all the time.

btw- the crew also has addition movies available that you can't view in the passenger cabins.

I got the Viewsonic TV's to work using their input.

I got the Viewsonic TV's to work using their input.

I had a balcony cabin, and the TV is mounted almost flush to the wall,

at the foot ofthe bed. There is plenty of space on either side.

It was no problem to reach in from the left side, unplug the

princess hdmi cable, and plug in my own.

Previously on both regal and royal, I had had an inside cabin,

where the tv was mounted almost flush to the wall, but in

the corner of the room, so that there was no way to access

the hdmi inputs.

However, if it had been a mirror-image inside cabin, there would

be no problem.

This is like many things on princess, there is no one answer fits

all -- so I find many of the posts on cruise critic amusing.

The arrow is the working hdmi-1 input.

I unplugged the princess cable, and plugged in my own.

I used a tv remote app, and I could adjust power and volume,

but I think the other settings (like input) are locked in firmware.

Easiest with some long handled curved forceps:

I was disappointed, as this would seem to prevent disturbing

the hyper-sensitive with messenger notifications.

Interesting point about the show lounge. I have attended some

production shows where the music is so loud that I can feel it.

The best thing the crew has is mega-byte based internet, rather than

minute-based.

They can receive notifications and only use a tiny amount of data.

Last year, I was arranging to meet a crew member on shore.

I send a couple messages, but they never changed to 'seen'

in Viber.

I was worried whether she had read the messages, and would show up.

She showed up, no problem. She had basically read the messages

just from the notification text, and didn't need to open the app and

use any data.

I admired her cleverness.

I had downloaded the Princess app months before my cruise. It never worked properly, so I went to the internet cafe for assistance. She promptly removed the app - said it caused Princess@sea not to work properly, as it was buggy. So, app is not needed.

Interestingly the crew TV's have a HDMI input available to them to use so they can connect pretty much anything they wish. A few of them had laptops but most just survived with their smart phones.

Our Viewsonic wasn't connected properly at the bottom so I could swing the bottom out a few inches.
