My apologies, but I cannot agree. Southampton is P&O's home port and has been for over a 100 yrs. It would be a terrible shame if that changed, and I would say that no matter where I lived I'm afraid.

Even though I live in Yorkshire I have to agree that Southampton is probably the best location, at least for cruises to the Med and points South, I don't really want to add 2 extra cold weather days on my way to and from the sun.

There may be a benefit in home porting a ship in Hull for Baltic, Iceland and Fjords itineraries, but it would need millions spent on it. The alternative is Liverpool but its further away for Baltic or even fjords cruises, and neither port is especially convenient for most of the southern half of the country.

If, once the M1 smart M/way is completed, they can keep it flowing smoothly, then for us the journey to Southampton is not really a major problem.

Never mind Hull, Newcastle could deal with Adonia quite happily now. I still would not go on her. Anyway I know the way to Southampton. In fact the last car could get there on its own. :)

Why not try regional ports. Nobody is suggest moving the entire fleet. Tilbury, Harwich, Dover, Newcastle, Liverpool and Bristol could be options. Possibly others too. Some of the passengers that go to Fred, Hal, Voyages of Discovery and CMV might switch to P&O. Out of Southampton Adonai will be competing with a lot of other Carnival owned ships. Do some regional ports have an advantage of being outside the Low Emissions Zone?

Historically I thought P and O used the Port of London?

Best wishes, Stephen.

Does it have to be a case of either/or? For cruises to Iceland couldn't Adonia start in Southampton but then call at Liverpool to pick up further passengers? Similarly for Norway or the Baltic start in Southampton but call at Newcastle. And for the cruises to the Canaries or the Med start from a northern port and then call at Southampton.

A few years ago I went on an MSC cruise to Norway where we started at Southampton, and then picked up further passengers at Amsterdam who had come not only from the Netherlands but from neighbouring countries too. So if MSC can handle multiple ports of embarkation and disembarkation, I can't see why P&O shouldn't be able to. I suppose the downside is that people who had boarded at Southampton might not be that keen to spend a day in Newcastle - with all due respect to that fine city.

We have had two wonderful cruises on Adonia and look forward to going on her again. Hopefully we shall get the itineraries released before the bookings go on sail. We will be at sea on 7th December so would be good to know what she's going to be doing before then. It seems as if the fathom experience has been successful from what I've read and presumably some other Carnival ship (ships) will be transferred to fathom. Adonia never really seemed the right ship for mostly American passengers, no all singing, all dancing. I assume she was chosen because of her size, just to see if it was likely to be a successful venture. I hope they didn't put the casino back in the lovely Anderson's lounge. It was taken out when the ship was transferred to P&O.

For those passengers using their own car, they need to start and finish at the same port.

If P&O were to pick up new passengers at different UK ports they would need to run for part of the cruise with empty cabins, and then presumably offer the passengers doing shorter cruises cheaper prices. All this would lead to higher overall prices, not a very sensible shareholder procedure.

From what I've read, it seems that the trips to Cuba were successful, those to the Dominican Republic something of a failure, having to be very heavily discounted. I suppose that's hardly surprising.

The press release I read said it would stop Cuba sailings in June next year, so it should be available for P&O from July sometime.

Originally set up as educational etc projects in Dominican Republic with Cuba only later. Understandably Cuba became the most popular venue, so it could be that Carnival simply want a larger ship rather than that the project has failed.

Without Cuba I can't see it as viable. Americans have to keep a record of what the did and who they met and keep it for 5 years but it's still the place holding the project together.

Hope it's true, what other Pando ship will sail into the heart of Saville. A memorable sail.

DAVID.

We were told some years ago by an Officer that P&O start looking at itineraries for cruises 2 years in advance.

This would seem to imply that there was a contract set up for Adonia to do just 2 years with 'fathom' to see how it went as she is a small ship and they couldn't be sure whether it would take off or not.

How could they be saying that cruises for her will be available on the 7th December if they hadn't worked them out nearly 2 years ago? 😕

I wouldn't be surprised if Carnival announce, within a short space of time, a bigger ship sailing to Cuba.

Incidentally, she now seems to have a Glass House where the Library was! If correct, this is excellent news for those of us who love our wine! 😀😀😀

We went on a ship visit the other week on Ventura and we heard there is now some areas on the Adonia that have been designed for children. We didn't ask questions as we assumed she wouldn't be back for a long time, so we're not sure if they meant a kids club type area. Will be interesting what it's like when it comes back!

That would be because 'fathom' accepted children. I would hope she would revert to what she was before - 'adult only'.

Another vote here for reverting to Adult only. With the trend towards larger and larger ships, which will only ever be family friendly due to their vast capacity, there is a danger that adult only cruises will become a thing of the past for P&O as the older (smaller) ships are gradually phased out.

As for current adult only ships, we haven't cruised on Arcadia, partly because we didn't like her when we visited on a ship tour and although we love Oriana, which we have cruised on twice (including our first cruise) we can no longer cruise on her as she has no accessible cabins with balconies (does Adonia)?

My ideal P&O cruise ship would be adult only and 100% no-smoking. Now there's a market that P&O could fill with Adonia:)

Quite agree about the danger of losing 'adult only' ships. Hardly any cruise lines offer this now. We are extremely lucky that we have one that leaves from the UK!

You should give Arcadia a try. We weren't sure when we first cruised on her, but she is now my favorite ship and my husband's 3rd favorite (after Britannia and Adonia).

She has some wonderful bars (East at the top is wonderful) a very good Ocean Grill (soon to be Epicurean I'm sure ) a Sindhu, a wonderfully renovated Crow's Nest, a large amount of sundeck space with quieter areas if you prefer, glass lifts, and a very good hydropool area.

The cabins are reasonable. We've had balcony cabins, mini-Suites and Suites. The best Suites, IOHO, being in the middle because of the spaciousness internally, although the rear ones have amazing balconies.

Maybe someone on here could let you know what the accessible cabins are like to stay in?

Highly recommend her. :)

I like my wine, but I hope that it doesn't mean that the new location of the library, wherever that may be, will be too cramped. It's not as though there aren't other places onboard to drink wine. But I suppose that selling wine is a money-making activity for P&O, whereas a library isn't.

According to what I've read, Carnival are now going to seek permission from the Cuban authorities for most of their brands, including P&O, to to able to call there.

I believe this is correct. Did the majority of emigrants embark from Customs House area. Canberra was registered in LONDON which is actually London not Southampton London as the Americans think.

But their chances of getting Cuba to agree can't have been helped by Donald Trump, according to the BBC website, having called the just-deceased Fidel Castro a "brutal dictator". Though arguably true, it can't have been been well-received in Havana.

Where did you find that out from? I had a look at the P&O website a could of hours ago, but couldn't find anything.

If you look at the fathom board you will find lots from the other side of the story and links to other sites.

Just a thought, does Pando really want Adona back?

Thanks. Subsequent to that post of mine, made some days ago now, I did find a number of news stories about it. As to whether Pando wanted Adonia back, I hope they did. If they didn't, I'd have thought Carnival could have found some alternative home for her.

These comments might have been the preamble to his next speech to become a President in another country.

It's just that I wondered if they really wanted a small ship in the fleet given the ever larger new ones with their reduced operating costs. I love Adona and would hope there would be enough people willing to pay the higher fares.

Adonia will carve out her own niche. Just like with the one remaining sister in the Princess fleet she'll have her own following of loyal fans, who like the fact that it offers unique itineraries, often with a price premium.

Don't worry the library is still there. The Glass House is where Sorrento was at the back adjacent to the Ocean Grill.

Must admit I'm looking forward to see what the itineraries will be.
