Some of the singers went to SD and said they loved it, particularly the Tron ride, so the under 25's will see it as a must do. From the places we visited the trip up the Jin Mao Tower is a must and the old Chinatown and Yu Garden are definitely worth doing. We also enjoyed our walk along the Bund, a stop at the Peace hotel and then the 1km walk along the Nanjing Road including the pedestrian section.

Today we are at 24.24N, about half way down the coast of Taiwan. It's cloudy outside, actually grey and completely socked in, temp of about 62F, small whitecaps and a light swell.

 

Tonight is the Captains farewell, unfortunately at the exceptionality early time of 6:30. He likes to eat early so everything is at least 30 mins earlier than normal.

 

We say goodbye to a number of guests who have done multiple segments and of course the $40m Dena Kemp jewellery collection.

 

Apart from the sandal maker who is on the edge of the pool deck we also have a tailor service on board, hiding out in suite 602. This is another piece of SS commercialisation that continues to creep onto the ships. Of course unnecessary since we have enough time in Hong Kong for anyone to get a decent suit made.

As far as the horrible smog and pollution in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China in general, it really is ghastly. And the population seems to be in total denial. The pollution is probably the main reason I would not be in any hurry to return to this part of the world. They really do need to take drastic measures to fix this. I can't imagine all the pulmonary problems doctors there must be seeing.

Can only speak for my adopted home town but sadly the population here is all too aware of the damage and consequence of pollution. Many of us have pollution monitoring apps on our phones and adjust behaviour when it's particularly bad. We have homes full of air purifiers that would do a hospital proud. Most pollution for us rolls in from the mainland no matter what we do. I think it's a key reason for people wanting to leave this region as the health consequences can be, as you point out, pretty ghastly.

Cheers Wes, at least it only rained for a short while this afternoon and it was very light. Those guests who went up the Peak today saw very little!

 

Went on an SS organised ferry ride around the harbour this evening, somewhat disappointed for what was billed as champagne and deserts turned out to be Proseco and chocolates. Just wish they could learn to be honest.

 

Big turnaround day tomorrow, 90 getting off and about 140 joining, gonna be full on the way to Nam.

Still very cloudy this morning and again some showers forecast. Today Daniela goes home to Brazil, so we will have a new boy in the late night Grappa Bar. She has been bubbly and always smiling and we will miss her.

 

Although most of the players are around there has been no Trivia for 2 days, some are getting twitchy.

The pool deck. Having been on the recently returned Wind, where the pool deck was completely relaid, the state of the Whisper is truly appalling.

 

There are ongoing repairs with some small sections replaced, however it should have been ripped up and replaced before the World Cruise.

At the rear on deck 9, the nice, new running surface has not been bonded correctly.

 

 

Reported to an officer as requiring attention 2 weeks ago, result nothing.

We will board May 10th in Barcelona for a 12 day crossing to Southhampton and am concerned with the degree of disrepair. I think our voyage is right when the WC ends, so probably we will sail as is. Not looking forward....

3rd and final day in Cloudy Kong, tops of buildings just about visible and the pollution is less than when we arrived.

 

We boarded about 150 new guests yesterday and said goodbye to about 90, so we will running full on our way to Vietnam.

Do you wonder if this company will push you to the point of no return? It's possible to have a great time on a clean ship that delivers closer to what is promised/advertised. Often, a great time can be had with passengers you first met on SS.

 

 

It's possible, but at the moment unlikely. We have extensive experience on other cruise lines and SS would have to fall an awful long way to get down to their level.
