Im pretty upset with myself  The last two cruises I went on I went with Nationwide Choice cruise through insuremytrip.com. This time, I went with HTH recommended through insuremytrip which was more affordable, had the exact same coverages I was looking for...............except this one :o

Had I went with Nationwide Choice this time, I would have been reimbursed 750.00 for our itinerary change.

Ugh [emoji35]

Right now we are booked on the Glory for January 20th 2018. Most of the ports are questionable, none have been cancelled as of yet that I know of. What would be your suggestion be on buying insurance now?

Thanks

I would call InsureMyTrip and see what they say. Nationwide is still my policy of choice even though my state doesn’t qualify for the missed port benefit. I like it because they cover preexisting conditions (I don’t have any) and Cancel For Any Reason if I want that up until final payment instead of within a specified amount of time of initial trip payment date.

We haven't purchased cruise insurance as of yet for this trip. We get insurance thru Insure My Trip, I will check out this policy.

Thanks

Well now you do. Call Nationwide or InsureMyTrip. There was even someone on here that had this insurance and said she made the claim and she was called a liar seven ways to Sunday. She got her money. Wish I remember who it was so I can find out whether to file now or later. You can see that prepaid Shore Excursions are a separate benefit.

I don't know if I am the person that you are referring to but yes my daughter and I had coverage through Nationwide. We had the middle of the road policy. We had a change inn itinerary last October due to Hurricane Matthew. Yes I filed a claim and yes we both received $750.00 back because of it. We had to show proof of when cruise was booked, payments made, and the letter from carnival. I emailed everything and after about 2 weeks we each had a check.

In fact when Key West was damaged the other week, my dear darling daughter got her hopes up we were again going to benefit from this coverage, as we are scheduled to go there Nov.14th. But alas they opened back up, I told her not to get her hoeps up. We applied our money to a cruise on Vista this coming March. Couldn't wait that long to cruise again so doing another short one in November.

As far as when to file I would now, that is what I was going to do if they would have cancelled Key West for our November one.

I actually called the number on the policy and they gave me a case number to use.

It would make sense to wait until after your return to file for the itinerary change. What if you ended up not going on the cruise at all due to some unforeseen circumstances? Payout would certainly be different then.

I didn't even know this type of coverage existed - the couple of times we've gotten insurance, it was a basic policy. This is good information to know.

Once a risk has been discovered or realized, you cannot purchase insurance on a known issue.

If you're buying insurance for an itinerary that hasn't experienced a loss (hurricane) then yes you can buy for an unknown risk.

Basically you cannot buy coverage today for port loss on islands that were hit by the recent storms.

But you could buy coverage, say, for western Carib.

That would make better since, however HMC received no damage, and may be canceled due to itinerary change but I am not going to purchase additional insurance to find out :)

We started using Nationwide Choice Ins last year and it came in handy when Carnival canceled Turkey Pre cruise due to the civil unrest over there

People on here said we’d never get paid the benefit because it was due to civil unrest but once Home we filled out the paperwork and in less than 2 weeks had our checks for $750 Each. 😜💰

We’re going on a Caribbean cruise in Dec and have bought Nationwide Ins again IF the port of Puerto Rico is changed or canceled we’ll get paid $750 each again

Hoping things r better by then though but it’s pretty bad currently

Also u can’t finalize the claim until After the cruise because u need to include a final sail n sign acct info

I have the Nationwide Luxury cruise insurance for my Sept 9, Sept 16, and Oct 21 cruises. After talking to the claims rep in Tampa, I have submitted claims for the first two, and Carnival already changed the whole itinerary for the third.

1) You have to wait to file. First, the claim requires your Sail and Sign statement as proof you went on the cruise, since the Itinerary change benefit only applies if you still go on the cruise. Second, if you read the form and your policy, it states accepting payment for your claim constitutes your acceptance of no further claims.

2) There are three different benefits for itinerary changes. First, the biggest amount (in my case $1,250 per person flat amount no matter how many ports are changed/dropped/added) is for a change made BEFORE departure. The second is $250 per person flat amount for a change after departure. The third is up to $1,000 for pre-paid excursions per person ONLY if they are not refunded. You CAN claim all three if circumstances warrant.

3) The policy states coverage is not valid for damage from storm-related issues IF the policy is purchased after the storm is named. So, don't buy the policy for a future cruise hoping an itinerary change based on Irma or Maria damage will be covered.

4) The itinerary change benefits are separate flat amounts NOT based on cost of losses. I am in free premier casino cabins and still receive the full flat amount. All other benefits are based on proven losses.

I have talked about this insurance plenty after I heard about it here on these forums, but people call it lies, so whatever... I tell people to go look and call InsureMyTrip and Nationwide to read and see for themselves. So, I purchase it for less than Carnival's insurance for better coverage and tell everyone I know to get it especially during hurricane season. All the naysayers can just keep shaking their heads and fingers in disbelief instead of just verifying it for themselves.

I have Nationwide insurance and I spoke with them Friday about my destinations being changed. They said they would only pay if I could show proof that I had a financial loss due to the changes. Not very happy hearing that because they are not very clear about that when you buy the insurance.

They have at least 4 different cruise policies. Luxury, choice etc.. each one has different levels. You may only have the port excursion reimbursement

Which policy do you have? I called and spoke to Nationwide a couple weeks ago right before my Bermuda cruise (we still didn't know if we were going because of Jose) ... she explained everything that we would get (we have choice ... so $750 or $200 for missed ports and $500 for non-reimbursed excursions) --- couldn't file until after the cruise because as stated, they need proof that we went on the cruise (they said the statement with folio/name is good) ... the only thing that she said as far as out financially is for the excursions ... need proof (letter from excursion company) stating that they would not refund money

Check out Nationwide Choice Cruise and Nationwide Luxury Cruise policies. It certainly will. Getting ready to cash in on one for a family member as well.

We purchased the insurance as you stated above. We will receive $750/person, for port changes. The claim needs to be filed after you complete the cruise and can show proof that you sailed. Call now to get details on the required documentation.

So, this is the response that I got when I questioned about the port changes. I have the choice plan.

Thank you for using Nationwide.

We can change the destination, What is the new destination? In regards to filing a claim - Do you have any financial losses from a result of this change? If so, we can see what the policy covers in regards to this loss. The coverage that you are asking about only covers if you have a loss in regards to cancelling/ transferring an excursion.

Please let us know if you have any questions or need anything further.

Did you call or email? What did you ask in your inquiry?

I'd call and speak to a supervisor...

You may be in a state that doesn’t offer this particular benefit. Look at the pic I posted earlier in the thread.

Sorry you are wrong. This has nothing to do with prepaid Excursions or port fees. Please read the policies I quoted and posted a pic of. You do not need to be out any money. It’s a one time payable benefit regardless of Shore Excursions or port fees. They pay when your cruise itinerary changes before you depart no matter what.

I'm not saying you are wrong, but that is not what I get from that graphic. It has these amounts in the limit of liability column. I have a hard time believing that in the absence of an actual financial loss caused by the itinerary change they will insure you against disappointment. I went to the site the graphic came from and could not find anything with a more detailed description of how that coverage actually works.

I guess we will find out as you pursue this. Please let us know how it ends up working in practice.
