HAL just lost my business because of cigarette smoke

Smoke may vary depending on voyage, It wasn't so bad on the 2 HAL cruises I've been on (repos).

Did you go in standard class on Celebrity or n Aqua/Suite? I think that makes a huge difference.

One thing I've never had happen to me, to the best of my knowledge, on HAL cruises is to be served something that wasn't what was described in the menu. On the Celebrity cruise last year, my wife and I ordered barramundi which is a delicate white fish (we've also enjoyed barramundi, or what passes for such on HAL). We got a white fish that had a very strong smell which was definitely not barramundi. Mackerel perhaps but not barramundi. The other incident that I can remember was ordering a mâche salad (lambs lettuce / corn salad) which didn't have a single leaf of the said vegetable.

We've been in Aqua Class twice and 19 times in MDR. We prefer the MDR. Blu was not for us, but I know lots of people love it. Never had a bad meal in the MDR on Celebrity or HAL.

The post quoted mentioned the 'subjectivity' of discussions related to food or food quality on any cruise line. I'm completely in agreement with this general assessment, in that any comments related to food or food quality should be taken for a grain of salt (at best). ;)

Glad to hear such good things about Celebrity! We're considering them for an Alaska cruise in 2019, and haven't sailed with them before. We'll avoid HAL for the near future until they come around on the smoking issue.

Same here. I don’t smoke and dislike the smell of it (except the smell of cigars which I do like). However I think smokers should have a space, and we shouldn’t totally ignore their needs. I think HAL got it right.

Spot on!!! (y)(y)(y)

I don't smoke, but do support the notion of having some limited space onboard a ship for those that have this unfortunate addiction. The 'rest of us', then, should avoid these quite limited / restricted areas on the ship where smoking is allowed. And from our experience on HAL vessels, the areas where smoking is allowed (if at all) are very limited / restricted, so it is not all that difficult to avoid those areas.
Except, of course, the casino on MOST HAL ships. And the smoke that drifts out of the casino. I'm all for outdoor smoking areas, but absolutely not indoors.

This is really easy. If you want to avoid second hand cigarette smoke entirely either select a HAL that does not permit indoor smoking or select another cruise line/ship. It does not matter what your attitude happens to be about smoking. No use complaining about it and booking a ship that permits it. There are alternatives.

Yes, the alternative is to just stay home. Our planet is so polluted anyway. Live in NYC or LA with all the carbon and it is far worse than having a whiff of cigars or cigarettes. When you are on a street with a bus passing by you are inhaling worse. No way of getting around it, unless you live on a mountain top. Or off the grid..
