If someone gets caught sneaking Booze

Yikes! Nothing like selling a bottle of booze for literally FOUR TIMES (or more!) what it costs at my local grocery store...

What do they charge for raw steak vs what a decent steak house charges? Carnival is a business, not a charity.

Have to disagree with you on this.

Business will charge prices based on what the traffic will bear and to maximize profitability. Do not believe they add anything due to smuggling. Besides do not believe there is a huge amount of smuggling going on in any case.

While that may be true on land. On board a cruise ship they have more leeway to charge higher prices. Cause if you don't like the price they are changing. You are not going to the bar across the street.

Why would Carnival turn them into any authorities. Carnival is under no obligation to do so and it would be a potential big mess.

Carnival would and does for one simple fact. If they get caught bring the illegal drugs back into the country. And it gets out Carnival know they had them Carnival could face legal issues.

False equivalence. A steakhouse cooks the steak and serves it. Carnival is selling plain bottles of booze. This would be the equivalent of Carnival charging $40 for a raw steak that cost $10 at the supermarket.

It was no more false than your comparison.

Carnival is in the cruise business; your local store, isn't. What Carnival charges is in line with what other cruise lines charge, and usually cheaper.

While unlikely for most offenders, the downside?

"Any Guest who refuses any such search or screening, or any Guest traveling with such items, may be denied boarding or disembarked and no refund of the cruise fare will be issued. The Guest will be solely responsible for any and all damage and/or loss caused by his violation of this policy."

Read your ticket contract.

Great piece of literature, but never will happen. Way too much bad PR. Though I have seen the unhappy look on peoples faces when they realize they will have to go to the "naughty room" to get their luggage. I can't say I haven't brought booze on, years ago. But though there are supposedly ways to smuggle it on, the technology has gotten a lot better and now all luggage is scanned and much more smuggling is found. A bottle of booze is less than $100, delivered to you cabin. You can bring on a 12 pack of coke or whatever mixer you choose. I bring on an empty insulated mug to mix my drink and carry it all over the ship. I put in about 2 ounces of rum some ice and fill a 24 ounce mug with coke and good to go for several hours. I know there are some that "have" to consume a bottle of alcohol every day, and if they want to vacation and have to get someone else how much fun they had, that is fine. But, a 750 ml bottle will make about 12 - 13 decent drinks of 24 ounces and all for less than $100. I enjoy a good dirty martini and will drink 1 or sometimes 2 in the evening. So for less than $200 I can drink all I need and considering the cost of the cruise and enjoyment, that is dirt cheap.

I have no reason to make this up. I too was surprised to hear that they weren't put in some sort of onboard jail. I've since heard of similar stories regarding passengers being caught with illegal substances onboard. Usually they just confiscate it. You only get arrested for it if you attempt to get those substances past customs getting off the ship. Regarding the sail and sign cards, I'm not sure how that worked out. Perhaps they still got to keep their physical cards, but they were deactivated for purchasing alcohol.

Most likely any reason they were arrested is they were not present during the search, and the search was likely done by a room attendant and maybe even with the hotel manager. But either way it would be an illegal search. The person assigned to the room would just claim it was planted and it wasn't his and there would be no actual proof it was. A ton of reason for them not to have been arrested. Not talking about murder or some other danger to other passengers. But very likely they did remove the ability to buy alcohol and just have the sign and sail card active to open their cabin. They do that ALL the time with minors.

first , if you dont believe that smuggling is factored into prices you dont know business.

Maybe 30 yrs ago, but nowadays companies have so much historical purchase data available at their disposal to determine pricing that it wouldn’t even be a variable in their analysis. Not to mention lost sale due to smuggled alcohol is inherently built into the data.

All they would have to do is start. After some stories about passengers denied boarding the smuggling would completely stop.

They won't start, ever, because if they booted someone for trying to take some booze on, they have the cruise fare dollars but nothing else, no excursions, no casino donation, no photos, no specialty dining, no other bar sales, no nothing.

Catching the ones that do smuggle is not that important to them. If they do happen to catch people, great but they will never deny boarding for someone trying to get a bottle or two on the ship. They're not stupid.

The cruise ticket contract gives Carnival the right to search your belongings without notice to you, so being present is waived. Also, any laws regarding search and seizure would be the laws of Panama or the Bahamas, not the US.

The booze gets held until the end of the cruise and then returned. I got caught by the booze police on NCL.

NCL policy is different than Carnival's,they stopped giving liquor back.

Policy

Guests are prohibited from bringing alcoholic beverages on board with the following exception - At the beginning of the cruise during embarkation day only, guests (21 years of age and older) may bring one 750 ml bottle of sealed/unopened wine or champagne per person in their carry-on luggage. All liquor, beer, other forms of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages outside of this exception are strictly prohibited in both carry-on and checked luggage and such items will be confiscated and discarded and no compensation will be provided.

If not returned the crew must have a very nice party on turnaround day.:)

I believe the rules are to give guidelines to those of us who follow rules regardless of how fun or easy it might be to break them. I suggest the cruise company is unlikely to do anything beyond confiscating what not allowed items they find (usually in their baggage scans and searches). After all, punishing customers really is not good for any business.

Jenny, the info you provided here caught my attention. You can buy alcohol from the Fun Shop and can drink it on board? I know if we buy on RCI, we can't access it until we disembark.

Pre-ordered from the Fun Shops (at a premium price) it is available to drink in your cabin when you board. You can also order from room service, again with a hefty price tag, and have it brought to you for drinking in your cabin.

Bought in the Fun Shops while on board and it is held until the end.
