Life In An Edge Suite: How Sweet Is The Edge Suite Life?

There is a "How Sweet Will the Sweet Life Be on the Edge?" thread from last year prior to the launch of the ship, where there was much speculation about Edge suite life. Though there has been some info posted on that thread post launch, it is difficult for people looking for accurate info to find it in one place (it is a long, winding thread, with lots of speculation). There were some surprises in the actual suite life that were not gleaned from Celebrity marketing materials. I will outline what I have learned from my own Edge Sky Suite experiences and will post pictures of all of the suites on the Edge (I was able to tour all of them). Hopefully, others will join in with their experiences and Edge suite tips and secrets.

The Edge Suite Life:

 

Of the 1497 staterooms on the Edge, 176 or 12% are suites (compared to present M and S Class have 5-7% suites), with 146 Sky Suites and 30 upper level suites. There are new types of upper level suites, the Iconic (2) and Edge Villa (6), as well as the old favorites of Penthouse (2), Royal (4) and Celebrity Suites (16).

This was the first Celebrity ship to have an exclusive suite sun deck (The Retreat Sundeck) and now the Millie also has a Retreat Sundeck and the Michael's Club on Millie is now called the Retreat Lounge, with more ships to follow as the Revolution changes each M and S Class ship. The Edge has the  Luminae suite dining room and other Revolutionized ships will continue to have a Luminae suite dining room.  On the Edge, all three are positioned forward on decks 12 (Luminae), 15 (Retreat Lounge) and 16 (Retreat Sundeck).

 

 

 

 

The suite life starts prior to the cruise with upper level suites: 

Pre-Cruise: If in a Celebrity Suite and above, you should receive a call from the shore concierge within a few weeks prior to the cruise. They can help get your needs and desires taken care of before you board (type of liquor and beverages in room for upper level suites except Celebrity suites, reservations, special requests, etc.).

 

Embarkation:

Terminal 25 (T25) offers Suite Class guests an entirely separate experience along the path to The Retreat, with an exclusive elevator, a lounge, screening areas and even a private rooftop terrace. After you go through the private screening area, you go right into the lounge area. There is coffee, tea, non-alcoholic beverages and pastries and fruit, etc. to start off the cruise. While seated, check-in people walk through and ask to see your passport and scan it in and take or retake your picture, if needed. There is an elevator to the rooftop terrace, which seems to be usually empty. There are several tables/chairs with umbrellas up there and a great view of the ship for picture-taking. There is a guard up there who is happy to chat - they are there to keep people from jumping down to a staircase close by and then getting onboard the ship (apparently it has happened).

After the ship is cleared, the suite guests will be the first to board. All passengers can head to their staterooms, obtain their Sea Pass cards from the mail slot next to the stateroom door, leave their carry-ons and proceed to the Retreat Lounge on Deck 15, Retreat Sundeck on 16 or Luminae for lunch, if open (usually open on embarkation day around 11:30). Your Sea Pass card will open the doors to the Retreat Lounge and Retreat Sundeck.

 

 

The Retreat Lounge:

The Retreat Lounge consists of a long, sort of a crescent-shaped room with floor to ceiling windows at one end and a door to an outdoor deck on the other end (this was the Retreat Lounge deck, not to be confused with the Sundeck, which is one deck up). It was designed by Kelly Hoppen and has many comfortable couches and chairs with coffee tables and tables, chairs, bench seating in the narrow part of the crescent that is near the food area. The outside deck is set up with several tables and chairs for dining/drinking and some comfy chairs for sitting, relaxing, reading. It has ocean views and is all enclosed except is open above the railing overlooking ocean. It is a nice place to have a continental breakfast before a morning excursion or a shady place to have drinks or read. The stairs up to the Retreat Sundeck are out there (can also take the elevator outside of the Retreat lounge).

The Retreat Lounge is open 24/7, with bar service during the day into the late evening. There is a continental type breakfast in the morning, with a coffee, latte, cappucinno, etc. machine and Tea Forte tea. There are bites to eat at other times of the day and a tea in the late afternoon. There are some pre-dinner bites,  including sushi. There are self-serve coolers with bottled water, Pelligrino and sodas in the Lounge.

One of the surprises was that there wasn't a free standing bar in the Retreat Lounge as found in Michael's Clubs, though there is attentive bar service service from roving servers (and all drinks are complimentary in the lounge). They explained to us that they didn't want anything to come between the guests and the staff (like a bar). The idea is for the servers to rove through the room, chatting and taking orders. There has been a lot of discussion about this - many people miss being able to sit at the bar and talk with the bartender and other guests (especially those cruising alone or who visit the Retreat Lounge without their partners/roommates).   They stock a variety of wines, beers and make most anything for cocktails (have top shelf items and will try to obtain items you request by the next time you visit, if they don't have it).

 

 

 

There are 3 Retreat Lounge concierges (more than usual due to the high number of suites). The Retreat concierges will help you with any questions, dining reservations, shore excursions, special requests and much more. They are usually very busy that first day, so you may need to wait a bit. They also can have someone from Shore Excursions or Future Cruises come to the Retreat to book excursions or cruises, if desired. If you want something like a bridge tour or have something you are celebrating onboard, the concierges will try to make your wishes come true. They have a small round desk with chairs around it - again, it was explained that they didn't want a big desk between the concierges and guests. There always seems to be at least one of them available in the Retreat and they also rove through and stop to see how things are going. They have some some special events there, such as musical performances or meet and greet officers. The menus for Luminae, the specialties, the MDRs and Blu are available, along with extra dailies. There are 2 single bathrooms with electronic doors that are tricky to operate. You need to remember to lock the door after it automatically shuts (it seems secure, but it will suddenly open at inopportune times, if not locked).

Retreat Sundeck:

 

The Retreat Sundeck on deck 16 has many comfortable and pretty padded loungers (some were double ones) and other types of chairs, with side tables. There seems to be plenty of seating for all, between the forward section near the bar and the back part of the sundeck with seating around the Solarium dome. The forward section, with the bar, pool and hot tub seems to have a vibrant feel when busy, though not loud. The back section is quieter and a better place fore reading or a nap. They play background music at a softer level than the main pool, but the music when I was there was some sort of mediocre acoustic sound.

 

The Retreat Pool Bar is a nice spot to hang out, with seats at the bar and several tables for dining or having drinks. They had a limited menu of snacks and lunch. You can eat a full lunch at the tables and at the time we were there, they would also serve snacks at your loungers. The bar service is friendly attentive, with servers wandering through both sections of the Sundeck. The Pool Bar charges for drinks if you don't have a drink package. You need to give them your Sea Pass when you get a drink. Most people in suites have Go Best (and suites above the CS's have premium beverage packages).

 

There is a pool and hot tub with some basket chairs hanging over the pool. The pool isn't huge - it was always popular when I was up there, but not full by any means. The hot tub was also popular and the basket chairs seemed to have lots of fans.

Luminae:

Luminae is the dining room for suite guests - breakfast and dinner served every day and lunch is served on sea days. It is a walk-in restaurant, though with the large number of suite guests on the Edge, they may suggest reservations for dinner for your cruise. Suite guests can invite non-suite guests to dine there, for a fee, based on availability ($10 B, $20 L, $30 D). It can placed on the suite guest's bill or the non-suite guest's bill. There is a Maitre d' and hostess in Luminae.

 

 

 

 

The food and service are generally excellent in Luminae.  Here is the breakfast menu and some pictures. They also go around with a pastry tray - the pastries are a bit of a step up from other venues onboard (though the croissants from Le Grand Bistro are authentically flaky and delicious, IMO).

 

 

 

There are 3-4 rotating lunch menus for sea days. Lunch here is a treat. This is the usual embarkation menu and some pictures:

 

 

The dinner menu has fewer choices than the Main Dining Room, but they are accommodating with special requests for modifying the items on the menu or, if made the day before, requests for off-menu items. They don't allow ordering from the MDR menus as they do on other X ships because Luminae is on Deck 12 Forward and the MDRs are on Decks 3-4 Aft. Staff reported that the Luminae galley is quite small so couldn't handle making a lot of extra items, though they did add an everyday menu including Caesar Salad, Shrimp Cocktail, French Onion Soup, Escargots, Chicken Breast, Steak and Salmon.

There is a one-stall bathroom in Luminae and public restrooms by the Spa Cafe are available one floor up by elevator or stairs that just outside of Luminae. 
 

Suites have butlers who can help you with reservations, meals served in your suite (we have had dinners on the balcony served course by course, buy may depend upon their workload), serve Cafe al Bacio coffee/cappuccino in the suite in the morning, work with guests services on issues (such as plumbing/mechanical problems with the suite, errors on your bill, etc.), set up parties in your suite and much, much more (can unpack for you, if you really want that). The Retreat concierges and butlers often work together to make things happen.

 

Note that the upper suites usually receive more attention to their wants/needs, which makes sense since they may be paying $20-50,000. That said, we were in 3 different Sky Suites on the Edge and felt pampered. Here is a list of suite amenities:

Other suite perks:

There is reserved suite seating in the theater on Chic nights.

Suite guests have preference for booking specialty dining.

Suite guests receive priority tendering.

Suite guests get priority luggage delivery.

There are many other perks listed in the brochure (link above).

 

Disembarkation:

Edge suite disembarkation includes having the Retreat Lounge as a comfortable place to wait to be escorted by the concierge to exit the ship. Getting off the Edge is generally painless if you have nothing to claim. You find your luggage (area well-marked) and with facial recognition you are allowed to walk off without stopping at customs (at least in FLL).  There is complimentary Luggage Valet in suites in ports where that is done (you leave your luggage outside your door the last night and it is on the carousel at your home airport when you arrive).

 

Unique to Edge suites:

If traveling with a group and some people in the group are in a connecting suite, any people in their group in a non-suite connecting to that suite will receive access to The Retreat, but with no other suite amenities, including butler service.

 

There are 8 Family Suites, available only during Christmas and New Years sailings:

The Celebrity Family Suites (2 pairs CS- C2) and Sky Family Suites (6 pairs SV + S1) are only available during Christmas and New Year’s Eve sailings. The brochure will identify that the rooms can convert to family suites. To book, you must to call Reservations as these suites will be held back. Note if they do not sell they will re-categorize to the original categories.

 

 

 

Common Themes in Positives and Negatives Reported by Edge Suite Guests So Far:

 

Many people in Edge suites who have done reviews have had an overall positive experience, though have often identified suite issues. Here are some themes seen on Cruise Critic. Most are from Sky Suites since there have been few reviews of upper suites.

 

Positives:

 

1) The Retreat Sundeck seems to be a home run. Some have wished for more shaded areas, but overall people like the comfortable seating, staff and service. There seems to be enough loungers for all and the no complaints about noise levels that I have seen. It can get windy up there at times, though the windscreens do a pretty good job of keeping it comfortable most of the time.

 

2) The Retreat Lounge - there have been positive comments on the comfort and attractiveness of the furniture and space and the mellow atmosphere. The food is a plus and drink service are positives and the outside deck is a nice addition. The concierges are very attentive and work hard to meet the needs of the guests. The suite manager has also worked hard to help solve suite issues.

 

 

3) Luminae - many have remarked that the space is beautiful and food and service excellent.

 

 

4) The Sky Suites - excellent storage (though somewhat smaller dresser in aft S1's), attractive decor (surprised that it looked better in person), beds facing the ocean have been enjoyed. The bathrooms are bigger (to the detriment of the living area), with a huge double sink, a vanity, a separate toilet area with a door and a huge Roman shower/bathtub with a great shower head. All have good-sized balconies, with the aft S1 with a huge 163 sq ft balcony - the balconies seem generally quite private.

 

 

5) Easy embarkation and debarkation.

 

 

6) Overall sense of being pampered in suites on this ship.

 

 

Negatives:

 

1) Price - the cost of suite living on the Edge has stayed high and some have said they won't book again until prices drop.

 

2) Substandard Balcony Furniture in Sky Suites - this has been a huge dissatisfier for many. The furniture is a big step down, where sky suites, and even many concierge and Aqua cabins on other X ships, have reclining chairs, footstools and tables big enough for room service. They have been bringing loungers for people in suites who request them, but IMO they should be standard or at least they should have reclining chairs, foot stools and a larger table. There hasn't been a lot of feedback from guests in the upper suites, but we have heard about the lack of loungers on the Celebrity Suite balconies (they have padded chairs and larger table - no foot stools and one guest was refused a lounger).  Room service on the balcony is a big part of the suite life for many.  Hopefully, they will listen to the feedback and fix these issues on the Edge and plan to have better furniture on the Apex.

 

3) Lack of Coffee Table/Comfortable Chair in Sky Suites - the lack of a coffee table in the living area (and shelf space in general) makes it even more difficult to have room service (this may be in the process of being remedied with coffee tables being added).  Also, there were some designer rocking chairs in each Sky Suite, though they were too large for the space and were removed after 3 months. At this time, these rockers haven't been replaced by a smaller rocker or other comfortable chair (and the couch has been described as uncomfortable by many).

 

4) Position of Beds in Sky Suites - When marketing the sky suites, it appeared that all were going to have beds that faced the ocean and a window over the bed that was a mirror in the bathroom that could become a window to look at the ocean. Many of us following the build were doubtful that all would have beds that face the ocean because of some renditions showing otherwise. It was a disappointment to many to find that their suites had beds against a sidewall and no mirror/window in the bathroom. My guess is that they found that floor plan would not fit in all of the various Sky Suite footprints and had to make changes after the marketing had started. It appeared that this never was passed on to TAs and X reps, as they still were saying that all Sky Suite beds faced the ocean.

 

4) Retreat Lounge lack of bar has impacted the use of the lounge for many. Though many have reported enjoying the Retreat Sundeck, there seems to be less satisfaction with the Retreat Lounge because of the lack of a bar. On S Class, the bar seems to be a central part of Michael's Club - the lack of one in the Retreat is noticeable. There have been some reports from staff that they are planning to have a stand alone bar in the Retreat Lounge on the Apex.

5) Luminae - Some have commented upon Luminae being noisy when busy, likely because it is one big open space. There have also been complaints about the lack of choices in the menus and about not being able to order from the MDR menus.

 

6) Leaky shower/bathtubs in the Sky Suites and has also been reported in a CS. The Sky Suite shower was originally open, without any enclosure or curtain. Water was flowing along the rim of the tub and then out onto the floor. They added a plexiglass section (about a foot wide) on one side to help block the flow of water on that side and then the flow went to the other side. A soap dish was glued on that rim and that helped with the majority of the leak, but there still was an issue when water sprayed out due to positioning of shower head or of the person showering. A curtain was added and there is less leaking, but there are still some reports of issues. It seems to be a design flaw that will likely be remedied on the Apex.

 

7) Lack of adequate bathrooms in Luminae or nearby. Electronic bathroom doors in Retreat Lounge bathrooms and Luminae bathroom are difficult to operate and slow to open/close.

 

 

Hopefully, this thread will be helpful for people who are looking to book an Edge suite. I hope that others will add their experiences and things I may have forgotten.

We are scheduled in a SS aft balcony (oversized) in Dec. on the Edge. We too are concerned about loungers on the balcony and lack of a large coffee table enough so that I have called Captains Club twice but not satisfied with their vague response. Hopefully in six months all will be resolved.

First up is the Sky Suites:

This is how they were first described: by X: "The unique, outward-facing design of the Sky Suite offers breathtaking views of the outdoors from anywhere in the stateroom, with a window between the bathroom and living space, which allows daylight to shine into the bathroom through the veranda. The king-sized bed was also rotated to face the ocean, promising guests the most awe-inspiring visuals and unrivaled comfort."  As hinted at before, they were unable or changed their minds about all beds facing the ocean in Sky Suites.

 

All of the Sky Suites have basically the same furniture and amenities. The furniture, now that they removed the Kelly Hoppen rocker, is not really different than the non-suite cabins with the same less than comfortable couch, a tom tom for an extra seat, footstool or small drink table, sliding vanity in the living area with fridge, dresser and king bed (that bed is huge, BTW - I didn't know my DH was there sometimes) with a gazillion pillows. I liked the looks of the sky suites in person - very pretty and peaceful feel. All have oversized balconies and 2 unimpressive chairs and a tiny table. They have been great about getting loungers upon request. It has been reported that coffee tables are on their way so that at least room service can be enjoyed.

 

The Sky Suite bathrooms are the real stars. It was the best bathroom that I have had on a ship - better than the S1's on S Class and better than in the CS on both S Class and M Class.  It is wider than any bathroom I've had on a ship and two people can easily hang out in there at a time. I love the vanity with make-up mirror, the huge sink and really liked the big Roman tub. It was a low profile so felt like a free-standing shower to me, though was a wonderful big tub (could fit two people in there). There has been a design issue with some leakage, but ours was fine when we returned after the modifications (we were in the same suite in Nov and Jan). The toilet is behind a frosted door and the area was big enough not to feel claustrophobic. There were 3 huge drawers under the huge sink and we put all of our stuff in there out of sight. The towels were big and fluffy and new and had the Retreat symbol on them. I was in heaven in that bathroom. 🙂

 

There are 3 classes of Sky Suites on the Edge:

S1 AFT  -  these 12 corner aft Sky Suites

-living area 299 sq ft

-have the largest balconies at 163 sq ft

-do not have the bed facing the water nor do they have the window/mirror in the bathroom

-closet/cupboard space is on either side of bathroom door, near the bed

-the dresser is shorter in the aft S1's than in the other Sky Suites

 

 

 

 

 

 

S1 Port and Starboard - 40 suites on 10,11

-living area 319 sq ft

-smallest balconies of Sky Suites - 79 sq ft

-have bed and bathroom window-mirror facing the water

-closet/cupboard along entryway with bathroom entrance between

-dressers longer than S1 Afts

Despite some significant issues, I still thought the Edge Sky Suite was awesome. I stayed in both types of S1 bed configuration and ended up really liking the bed facing the ocean floor plan (I never would have thought that it mattered until trying it). It pains me to say it because we prefer aft S1's and it was difficult to give up that huge aft balcony. I must say though, that we had more privacy on our balcony and it was very quiet and every time I was in bed reading and watching the ocean or brushing my teeth while gazing at the sparkling water, it was all worth it. 🙂

It sounds like both might be taken care of - someone saw them carrying coffee tables down the hall last week, supposedly for the sky Suites - we will see. The loungers seem to be easy to obtain. Enjoy the suite life! 🙂

You have been so helpful.  I feel like I know the ship now after all your posts that I have followed for the past year.  Only 15 more days til I finally get on.  I noticed that you had a padded lounger in the aft suite and just a plain one on the side suite - can you ask for the padded one or was that because you had that accident and they wanted to go way above and beyond

 

Also in one of the pictures I see Montaudon Champagne in the room.  Is that normal or was that an extra special gesture?

I am so excited for you! Can't wait to hear how it went and find out about any further changes!

 

The padded one was brought to us on the very first commercial cruise when they were not going to give anyone loungers, but the suite manager did get one for us, likely because of the accident (and probably found a padded one so it would be extra special 😉). Now that they are giving them to all who ask, they must have a stack of the less expensive ones ready to go.

 

The champagne was a gift, along with chocolate-covered strawberries after the accident. I think we enjoyed that with Katie and her DH the last night of that cruise? 🙂

I really like Montaudon almost as much as my favourite - Veuve.  I think I saw it on one of the drink menus.

 

No idea how you were able to do such a great job on the live on the Edge.  I keep thinking I would like to do a live because I so enjoy everyone who does them but afraid I'll start and then have so much

that I will disappear off the Boards.

Maybe you should play it by ear and post onboard if you have the time. Otherwise, you can give us a review when you are home and unpacked. 🙂

Hi Marilyn...I am sorry to quote Silkroads's post, but what did you mean when you said that your other suite facing the water was quieter than the S1 aft...I was not aware of that, so what was the cause of the noise, please.  

 

My computer will only quote your entire post, so that is why i used this one...crazy, as I have tried several times and even shut down my computer...Sorry!  Also, do you have an info' on suite 11202, as I know it is poleless...thanks!

Some of the S3's are going to end up being pretty good, I suspect. There's been that weird banging reported up above a couple of the high ones. The orange box on the end ones is a bit of an eyesore, but the windows are nice. The middle ones have the better view out (the rail isn't as much of an issue and I didn't mind the view at all) and the side ones (except 12) have the window for a side view. They do have nice, big balconies. The middle ones on 8 and 9 might end up being the best ones (furthest away form parked Carpet).

 

Not sure of the cost, but the Retreat and Luminae would be nice, no matter the suite assignment. You would have that lovely forward view from the Retreat Sundeck going into ports and it sounds like they are doing some special events in the lounge. A difficult decision I would hate to have to make.

We sailed in a S3 and it was great except for the leaking shower/tub.  We were disappointed the large balcony didn't have lounges as there was plenty of room.   Those suites are expensive, lounges should be standard.  The chairs are more comfortable than they look.  At the very least, there should be footstools.

@firstmate I heartily agree with you about the loungers and footstools. Which S3 did you have?

 

@vtcruising I just realized today that some of the S2s are forward. I’d been thinking all the Sky Suites were midship or aft. I’m susceptible to motion sickness, so I’m wary of forward cabins (the only time I’ve had to make a fast exit was from a party in the Reflection Suite during choppy seas). That was a close call, despite bonine😜 Have you heard any confirmation that Edge is more stable than older ships in this regard? I do love the look of the Sky Suites themselves as well as the Retreat & Retreat Lounge😊

I didn't say anything in my original review of 11268 because I chalked it up to bad luck. The couple in the SV next to ours were very nice, but they had brought along a very "lively" extended family and since they were likely in IV's they would visit frequently to be on the balcony and get quite spirited in the connecting hallway when they arrived to visit and the party continued out onto the balcony. They were not obnoxious, just very excited. I usually find the S1's quiet and the shared hallway not an issue, so likely just bad luck.

 

The midship S1 had a solidly enclosed balcony with no gaps or openings between the balconies on one side (firewall) and the divider on the other seemed to give a little more privacy than the aft S1 (see picture) and we had a quiet neighbor so it was so quiet and private. Also, they have soundproofed those suites so well inside that I don't remember hearing any noise whatsoever from the hallway or from either side (and the aft S1 must have been too or we would have heard the happy family in the cabin).

 

10147 balcony dividers - the first one is the firewall and the other one has some gaps, but felt less likely someone would peek 🙂

 

 

11268 balcony divider (slanted so that you have a better view, but has a little less privacy at the rail because of the slant):

 

 

So, I think we always run the risk of noisy and nosy people next door, but maybe we just lucked out with 10147 and had quiet neighbors (or maybe no one was in them). Of note, our friend in a deck 7 aft S1 on the same cruise went commando when sunbathing on his balcony and felt that the balcony was very private. When you look down to the balconies below you see very little of them.

 

Here's a picture looking down from 11268 - that is my balcony floor that I see because of the slant of the rail and I could only see heads of people at the rail below (and Eden).

 

11202 looks good - no overhang, no pole as you said, no other obstructions, close to elevator. You'll see the MC to one side, but far enough away to not affect view. I wouldn't swap if I were you because of the noise/privacy thing - hopefully, on a TA you will have older, less excitable people next door. Remember the wake and remember the huge balcony!! 😉
