ToyFoxFan Posted June 23, 2019 #1 Share Posted June 23, 2019 Are power strips allowed and if so what type. Also can a small fan be taken onboard?
AF-1 Posted June 23, 2019 #2 Share Posted June 23, 2019 power strip is ok; surge protector is not allowed. Small fan is ok
denmarks Posted June 23, 2019 #3 Share Posted June 23, 2019 Since ships are not grounded their system can not handle a surge protector.

Bzzt! *Really* bad advice. The problem is the grounded "neutral" wire that surge protection electronics rely upon to not catch fire when they do their job isn't grounded on shipboard-style wiring. It's rare to get a large enough surge, but if (when?) you do, the fire damage would put a dent in your onboard folio -- assuming you managed to wake up in the morning. palolake Posted June 23, 2019 #10 Share Posted June 23, 2019 This is from the Princess website. I'm not even going to try to find anything on HAL because their website stinks: *Electrical devices such as small fans, power strips, multi plug box outlets/adaptors, and extension cords without surge protectors are allowed onboard when used with proper caution. However, if such devices are determined to pose a hazard they will be removed and returned the last day of the cruise prior to debark.

Ship's electrical systems are grounded for safety, just like in your home. What is different is how that ground connection relates to the two power conductors. Also, it is not that the system "cannot handle" a surge protector, but the surge protector is not designed for the grounding configuration of the ship. Further, due to the grounding configuration that causes dangers when using a surge protector, surge protectors are not needed on ships. I have been on several ships directly struck by lightning, and nothing onboard has ever been damaged by the lightning strike, not personal electronics, nor the ship's electronics.

Something got garbled there...? • I don't want to be on the same ship as a plugged-in powerstrip with surge protection. • You have to open up even a cheap power strip to tell if it does or does not have surge protection -- even then you need to know what a 14¢ metal-oxide varistor looks like. • Cruise staff are not going to bother trying. Extension cord for the win.
