Cabin Key Question

I will be traveling with my two sons (age  12 and 13) next year on the Escape. One son in particular is very forgetful. If he loses his key card for the room, what happens? I am sure he can get it replaced but is there a fee and what if he has money attached to his card?

No fee, no one can use his card - other then to get in your cabin until you go to customer service to get a new one.  When you pay with room key it shows your picture.  They wont know your room unless they followed him and he dropped outside the cabin when entering the cabin

I am travelling with my 12 year old on a cruise in a week. I bought lanyards with the plastic holders for our room keys. That way it will always be around his neck (and not in his pocket or in his hand where he can leave it somewhere).

I always try to be proactive as I know my son would also be forgetful.

We also do the lanyard for our sons and they haven't lost it once. Which is really a miracle. I know another family that have the clip for the top of the shorts and the card is in a sleeve attached to that (because their son doesn't like to wear around the neck).

My Mom lost hers on our last cruise. It was no big deal at all. Took 5 minutes at guest services to get a new one.

On Escape they can still punch a hole in the card so you can goto customer service or casino to get it punched and put it on a lanyard.  That way you don’t have to worry about them keep taking it out of the plastic pouch.

The last time we sailed with our teenaged kids the cards made onboard were only room keys and had no charging capabilities - but that was back in 03 and I know that the key cards have changed a lot since then and perhaps the onboard customer service desk can replicate your card complete with charge account data etc. While the photo is not stored on the card, the data on the stripe allows different areas to access information - I believe that security is the only area that has access to the photo. Other areas like the MDR have access to your room number and name and if you have any SDP /UBP and maybe how many meals you have left. I know in both 12 and 16 we had to have at least one room card at the MDR - that was a first for us I also know that with the SDP they new we had it when they swiped our cards - yes there we all had to have our cards swiped.

 

However even for us the idea of a lanyard with or without a pouch seems like a good idea - my MIL always used one to carry her important stuff in.

Bartenders can also see your photo so they know the correct person is getting the drink.

On the Dawn the servers took care of the cards - never saw the bartender - sometimes our card was not even swiped - we had the UBP which was printed on the card and that was all they looked at.

Losing the Key Card on the ship is not all that bad a deal - just go to Guest Services and get another.

 

HOWEVER - you are off the ship and lose it - when you board the ship a junior version of the Spanish

Inquisition takes place (no not really) just you will be escorted to Guest Services to get a another.

 

The Key Card is the ultimate instrument getting you on and off the ship paying for activities drinks dining

 gifts casino bets shows and of course the most important part getting into your cabin.

Having it readily accessible is a must but don't be casual and careless about it.

 

OH and one thing that happens frequently - you are dining or drinking with a bunch of your buddies and

the waiter comes back with your Key Cards and you go to your cabin and can't get in - LOOK at the

card - the waiter switched and did not return the cards to the correct person - Go to Guest Services to

get this resolved is the best and foremost method.

We've always used lanyards with the clips.  Carnival now has the hole already punched in the key cards, but back in the day we would just go to the casino & have them punched.  Our son cruised at 10, 11, 17 & 26 and has never lost his key card.
