Land and Sea On the Sun Live Review with Pictures

Recommended Posts

So WiFi was up and down yesterday during our visit to Great Stirrup Cay and to be completely transparent, I wasn’t feeling ship shape after night one in the casino 😬

Dinner night 1 was in Seven Seas. Our table was at the back of the dining room overlooking the wake. Great table!

We are currently docked in Nassau. Wish I could upload pics but WiFi is not as functional as I’ve experienced on Breakaway and seems to lock up when it comes to uploading pictures.

I have to say that we are having a great time as usual. Some things to note:

Great Stirrup Cay tendering wasn’t the nightmare I was expecting it to be. We did the whole process with relative ease. I’m still amazed by the lack of common courtesy that some people engage in with regard to jumping up and mowing people over in order to exit the boat. Such behavior reminds me of those getting off a plane who don’t understand the concept of taking turns. But that aside it was a pretty nice day. We rented a small cabana which was great when it rained. Also bar service was abundant. We had cabana 16 which was close to the bathrooms and also the food truck. The cabana had lots of towels, 6 bottles of water in a mini fridge, an outdoor shower, and rubber mats for floating in the water. I liked the location of the small cabanas a little better than the large ones as the area seemed more private. The island itself was big enough to swallow up the smaller Sun passenger capacity so nothing was crowded. My only minor complaint about the cabana was that although there was plenty of seating, it only had one lounger. We had to bring an additional one up from the beach so that both DH and I could have one. Not a huge deal, but something worth noting. Here’s a pic... maybe...

I know you got there at 1150, but any chance you've talked to someone who mentioned they got there earlier? Just booked last minute with a friend and trying to figure out when to get there. Taking a day off work and figure we might as well get to the pool and bar as soon as we can. Didn't know if boarding starts at 11 like the larger ships or not.

So we are back on dry land. Had a great time even though it was short. Following is a wrap up of the weekend and some final thoughts...

Entertainment:

Spent a good bit of time in the casino and walked away with some money this time 😀. One thing to note is that the casino is no longer open while visiting Great Stirrup Cay. I asked the casino manager about this as it was open when we were on the Sun last June. Was told that the “permission has changed”.

Evening entertainment options were largely condensed or maybe I should say directly proportional to the size of the ship. We saw 1 production show on the last night called “Rock You Tonight”.  I liked the show and DH said it was one of his favorites in recent history. There was one comedian who did a family show on night two and an adult show on night three. Probably one of the worst I’ve ever seen but she got a lot of laughs so maybe it was just me. Other entertainment options included live music, a dance party on the pool deck, and a host of game shows. Overall we were ok with the entertainment but I’m not sure how I would feel on a longer cruise.

Food:

Much better for us this time. We didn’t do a specialty on this trip as we were always able to find something appealing in the MDR. We preferred the Seven Seas which is aft and they took great care of us!  Dinner service took about 1.5 hours. We only got dessert once but enjoyed a bottle of wine through the PPBP every night.

Stateroom:

Deck 4, 4207. Located close to elevators and pretty easy access to most everything we wanted. There was a slight sewage smell in the corridor but not in our room. Room itself was quiet despite being directly across the hall from a crew door. I wish it had been cooler at night. The size of the room was fine for the weekend with just 2 of us. Wouldn’t dream of trying to stuff 3 people in there.

Clientele:

Ive read on CC that these 3 day weekenders are nothing more than booze cruises. To be sure there was plenty of alcohol to go around but people behaved well and dressed well too. There were a few lively moments for some but I was really pleased with the vibe and the behavior. That said the average age was probably 30 with very few children or elders.

Premium Plus Beverage Package:

We didn’t upgrade, it just came with our cruise when we booked. I’m glad we got to try it but now that we have, I know that I don’t need to upgrade for future cruises. All of what we like to drink is included in the regular package. We got bottles of wine bc we could, but we are also fine by the glass.  DH tried some top shelf scotch. The bottled water was convenient. BTW they will only give 2 bottles at a time. That works for most but one lady got heated when they wouldn’t give her 6 bottles at once. Starbucks was the only specialty coffee I saw and that isn’t included in the package.

Bottom line, we had a great time. Would chose the Sun for a short cruise again.

How much for the small cabana?  Looks nice...do waiters come by for drinks?

We paid $220 for the day. A bit of a splurge but well worth it because it allowed us to make a full day of it despite the rain. Waiters came by to take drink orders every 15 minutes or so. They were very attentive.

Hi Georgia

We just got off the ship today as well. Just finished a review.  We enjoyed the Premium Plus as well though were disappointed the bars could not get us Gatorade yesterday. Could have used it while on the pool deck.

Ate in Le Bistro the first night (exceptional) and in Seven Seas looking at the wake the 2d and 3rd nights.

We had great food (same Short Ribs Pappardelle) though thought last night was a "miss" on all accounts on what we chose for app/entree/dessert last night

We felt the stateroom was in good shape overall.

Would agree with you on last night’s dinner. I had the chicken cordon blue. It was fine but the side of diced potatoes with peas and carrots was interesting.

One of our apps was missing the dressing, we both had sea bass and it was DRIED out.

We had the orzo with calimari as a "side"  last night and it was just ok.

Dinner Sat was much better... and Le Bistro was exceptional.

Saw many families and a lot of brides-bridesmaids-girls trip groups.

GeorgiaPeaches - how much did you tip the waiters (if at all) who assisted you in the cabana?   any chance you snapped any photos of the provided snacks?   i rented one for my solo cruise later this month as the price with my Plat Plus discount was teh cheapest ive ever seen.

We tipped $25 at the end of the day for about 6 hours of service.  Not sure if this was too much or too little but our guy was very attentive, even when it rained.  And he seemed happy with it.  Sadly, no snacks were included in the small cabana rental.  Just bar service, mats, bottled water, and towels.  The towels were a nice touch too because I heard some people on the tender complaining that they had to lug their towels back and forth from the ship.

Great review and pictures. We're on the Sun next Monday and I am looking forward to a bottle of Veuve Clicquot. Thanks for sharing.

I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. The Veuve Clicquot was the perfect way to kick off the weekend. Have a great time!
