What to do in Burnie, Tasmania?

We have never been to Burnie, Tasmania before.

 

I was wondering would you recommend doing here for the day??

 

If you have been to Burnie, before, what things did you do there for the day??

 

Any ideas / suggestions are very welcome 😀

There will be a shuttle from the Port to the makers workshop. Fr9m there you have a few options. (You can spend an hour or two looking at the crafts as well)

 

There is a shuttle that makes about 6 stops if you just want to look around town. Or it is a lovely walk along the water into town.

 

if you hire a car there are a few trips, last year we did the food trail towards Davenport, chocolate factory, cheese factory, berry farms. To the West there is Stanley, the Nut, a Whiskey distillery, some more cheese, a wildlife park etc,

I haven’t been to Burnie by ship,personally it’s pretty unimpressive.

 As gut2407 said Stanley to the west is a lovely little town and there’s poppy fields on the way.

 From what I thought Burnie is a staging point for tour to cradle mountain

Personally I think Cradle Mountain is a bit far, at least two hours each way, not on great roads either.

Agree with the above posts, there are a few museums / art galleries in town as well. I would have a vehicle and check out the surrounds like Penguin, Stanley and such. Cradle Mountain is a little too far as it is around 2 hours just to get to Dove lake.

We have used Rental Cars in the past. Avis delivers cars to the Markers centre, where the shuttle drops you off. Hertz has an office in town. Don't delay booking a car, as they go quickly. Rates were reasonable.

I love Cradle Mountain and Dove Lake. If I hadn't been there a few times, I would seriously consider hiring a car and driving there.

I was thrilled to go to Burnie in 2011 because I my grandparents were living in Devonport when we were young. 

A cousin mets us and we visited old places and enjoyed the memories. 

 

There are some beautiful beaches but you do need hire a car.

We split a taxi with another couple to the airport to pick ours up cost about $20 between us.

Fern Glade Reserve is nice if you like nature.

Exactly, an big issue, at least at Stanley or such there is likely to be more traffic and or cabs.

We booked with Play Around Tour and she created a great private day's trip. Highly recommended.

We've booked That's the Spirit Tours for a 4-5 hour exploration of Devonport and the coast on the way there. 

 

I found the Discover Burnie tourist information center to be very helpful with ideas.

Hey Geoffery

Mark said we paid $48 for the share taxi to the airport.

 

My DH & I drove out to Cradle Mountain. The road was narrow and windy. We arrived a little after midday, way to fast given the weather conditions (raining).  Whilst we ate lunch in the very small cafe the rain stopped and sthe sun came out. We then caught the shuttle to Dove Lake. In retrospect I would have driven into the park instead.

As previously mentioned there are plenty of other places to visit that are closer unless you really want to see Cradle Mountain NP which I did.
