Where in the world ?

Right you are.  Not quite sure how it got on Cunard's list since big cruise ships aren't allowed there.  I suppose it was an overland tour where people got off say in Lima and rejoined the ship a couple of  ports later like Guayaquil.  I was there on a 20-some passenger ship with International Expeditions in 2009.

Roy

The Galapagos Islands made our list of Cunard ports by virtue of my finding a couple itineraries from the 1990's for Sagafjord and Vistafjord which included them. For Sagafjord, the Galapagos were included on a 96-day itinerary from Cozumel to Funchal via the Panama and Suez canals departing January 1993 (essentially a world voyage, I suppose). For Vistafjord, the Galapagos were listed on a February 1994 itinerary segment from Guayaquil to Los Angeles.

Apparently those calls just made it under the wire for restrictions on cruise ship visits. Here's an article from the Los Angeles Times which mentions Vistafjord's 1994 visit.

No More Big Cruise Liners to Galapagos

It appears this thread is finally winding down after a very long and interesting run although there are hints that a few more port photos may be on there way. I realize now there are a couple I've visited but don't have my own photos. I'll see if I can find suitable public domain images to contribute.

Since we've started a new browser page, here's another update to our unseen Cunard ports list for those that might be still looking for inspiration for further contributions.

I've been to a few of these places but either so long ago that I can't find any photographs or they were so uninspiring I didn't bother !

Actually, I have several photos from my visits to Ponce, Puerto Rico, and Santo Domingo, DR. They are of sterilization equipment being installed at medical device manufacturing sites and look a lot like clean rooms and manufacturing lines, not much like sea ports.

I'm guessing they're not really applicable to this game.

Here are two public domain photos of a cruise-by location I've been to from the land side.  This location is not on our unseen list, although there is a Cunard ship located only 11 nautical miles away.

The second picture is the Memorial Garden at the Lusitania Museum in County Cork, Ireland. The ship was sunk a (relatively) short distance from that point in 1915.

I believe that the location is referred to as the Old Head of Kinsale. Nearest town is Kinsale.

Correct on all points, @ExArkie.  The Lusitania sank about 11 nautical miles from the Old Head of Kinsale on 7 May 1915.  A tragic event for the passengers and crew, Cunard, and world history.

I should have a couple more but I've been quiet recently as I'm trying to recover from three, yes THREE!, hard disk failures

For an awful moment I thought you had a really bad back, but now I deduce it is something IT related: deeply tedious, but less agonising.

Here are public domain photos from the 1930's of a place on our unseen ports list I've visited on a Cunard cruise but alas I don't have any of my own photos to show for it. I'm taking it somewhat on faith that the photos' descriptions are correct since I can't say I recall seeing these specific features in the landscape. They are certainly representative of the location in any event.

My feeling was this was somewhere in Norway, but no luck on any searches so far.

We're overdue for a hint on my last contribution. I'm not surprised this has been a difficult one. Knowing the location, I still wasn't able to find a match in other sources.

Here is a photo of my own which might help. This photo was not taken at the location I'm looking for. But it was taken on the same day we visited the location shown in those public domain photos I posted above. I figure this is only about 5 NM sailing distance to the start of the location I'm looking for.

I've been trying to "cheat" by doing searches for @bluemarble's two public domain photos.  I've tried a bunch of keyword combinations for 1930s norway, 1930s fjord, 1930s scotland, 1930s isle of, and 1930s iceland.  No luck, I'm afraid. I might be looking in the wrong part of the world entirely (that has certainly happened before!) or  using the wrong keywords for the photo captions.

While we are wracking our brains about Norway, here is a very old postcard, clearly showing a Cunard sail by, which I gather at the time was a frequent occurrence. It is also a route many of us will have followed on cruises, though not mentioned as a sail by. No points for the ship, by the way.

While we ponder @exlondoner's latest contribution, it's time for another hint about mine.

It will probably come as no great surprise when I suggest the key to identifying my last photo is to identify the waterfall shown in it. Although it may look rather insignificant from that angle, it is a fairly well-known waterfall. However, it is outshone by a larger and more well-known waterfall across from it.

Remember once you have figured out the location of my last photo, the next step is to determine what location on our unseen ports list is nearby. That other location is the purported subject of the public domain photos I posted Thursday.

Merok, Norway? The waterfall appears to be ‘The Suitor’ the more famous mentioned is ‘Seven Sisters’ in Geirangerfjord. Internet searches for Merok seem to tie both Geiranger and Merok together so will go with that as my guess.
