Horizon - Hot, hot, hot (and no, not in a good way)

I commented on another thread about this, but I thought I'd start a new topic.

I just got off of the Horizon yesterday on an 8-day ABC island cruise. First... let me say, overall, I had a great cruise.

But....... and it's a big but. This ship was HOT! I'm talking sweat your extra calories off hot. Other than our cabin which was cool (thank God or this fat old lady would have jumped ship), everywhere you went was miserable. I sat at Alchemy most nights and the heat was quite the topic of conversation amongst everyone. This is an open area bar, so there isn't a reason it should be so sweltering there. The Blackjack tables in the casino were like a sauna. Eating in the MDR was not fun in your nice clothes when you feel the sweat on your back.

I think part of the issue is the LED spotlight lights they use everywhere. Those suckers put off some heat. But, other than that, I really don't know the reason.

I spoke to Guest Services and honestly, they just kept throwing around different "reasons" and excuses and didn't really seem overly concerned.

The ship is lovely and the crew were great, but I will have to be offered one hell of a deal before I would sail her again until I know this has been addressed.

Curious if others have had this experience recently on the Horizon....

LED lights through off little heat compared to incandescent. They were not the heat problem. I am sure it was a major A/C or engine problem of which I am also sure they were doing there best to solve. Remember, you cannot run to a supply company for a part. You can bet all the workers especially those down below wished more than you did that the A/C was working properly. Thinks about the cooks in the galley, those down below in the engine compartment.

We stopped cruising with Carnival due to the cabin temps. The last several cruises we took our cabin was like a sauna, we literally went up to the serenity deck in the middle of the night to sleep. Guest services would send someone to check the temp they would point the thermometer directly at the vent and say it's within range. Range is 76° to 78°.

I don't know about most people, but that isn't acceptable to us. When you've been in the sun all day, I want to return to a cool room.

50+ sailings with Carnival. Only once did we have a hot room, wanted to move us to a different room. We liked where we were. They  correct it. I would say not a bad average at all.

@acsflWe are booked for November, but one of us has MS and is extremely heat sensitive. As long as her cabin AC works she will be okay. Did you happen to hear any complaints from others about the cabins, or was it the common areas that were the issues? Thanks!

It seemed just to be the common areas. Our cabin was cool(though I had it cranked as low as it would go). But, I spent more time in my cabin than I would have because of the sweltering heat. They could have gotten a lot more of my $$ in the casino, but I could only take it for so long before I had to leave.

Hearing that this has been going on for a couple months now, and we are now in the summer months for the Caribbean is very concerning.  If it was a simple fix, I am sure it would be done by now.  Leaving on the ship in 27 days for a first time carnival sailing, with a very carnival hesitant wife... I am sure if these reports are accurate, I will never get her back on a Carnival ship again.

Good luck!

We've been on a lot of Carnival sailings and on every one I'd say the public areas were either OK or towards the chilly side. A few times we've been in a cabin which was too warm, but they've always been able to rectify the situation (save one...).

I always bring along a thermometer - so that I can properly assess the situation. Across all ships, and understandably so, the humidity is often a big part of any discomfort which may be felt.

The last 3 we took our cabin was hot. We were on the 10th floor, front of ship. After the last one we decided to try something different where we could be cool. Best decision ever, but we're kinda missing cruising, just not willing to be miserable while trying to sleep😊

This thread surprised me. We have over 30 seven day Caribbean cruises on Carnival and have never had any temperature problems other than my wife usually wearing a light jacket because she finds most air conditioned places chilly.

But if I did take a cruise where the room did not stay below about 71 at night I would be miserable. I like it cool when I sleep (and my poor wife has a pile of blankets on top of her).

When we cruised in January 2020 (not the same ship), the common areas were SO cold. Now, that's cold for me but maybe not everyone. I am taking plenty of sweaters for my upcoming cruise in January 2023. Our room was pretty warm (74-76). We kept the drapes closed to limit heating from the sun. It wasn't so hot that we were miserable, just warm for sleeping.

I would guess that the staff wasn't truly unconcerned by the comments about the heat. My guess, and it's only a guess, is that they make less of it because as soon as they agree or sympathize, 1000 people all demand compensation. Not everyone, of course, but you know people would line up if they thought they could get money out of an issue like that.

I am sure it was unpleasant to be that warm. I wouldn't have enjoyed it either. Hopefully they get it resolved quickly. I'm sorry that you had that experience. Being physically uncomfortable for a whole trip definitely takes its toll.

I have lots of cruises under my belt too (Carnival and others) and have never, ever been so hot on a ship. And we always cruise summer. It was awful.

Yes. Usually in the evening it is down right cold in the common areas. You see a lot wearing jacket's or sweaters. This is what I bring on board, every sailing. Alarm clock with temperature that happens to be very accurate. So is the clock which is automatically set via a radio frequency of Greenwich Mean Time

What rooms were you in? We are in that area for our cruise in October.

I was on the same cruise as the OP and I completely agree with this assessment!

The ship was uncomfortably hot!

The cabin room was a little cooler which made it bearable.

Can’t believe a ship four years old can’t stay cool for passengers.

Won’t sail on her again until they fix it and improve the food quality in the lido.

I had a good time but things need to improve on this ship.

I'm surprised again. This thread has made it this far without someone saying, "you could have easily gotten two plastic trash bags, filled them with ice and tied them together over your shoulders to have one in front and one in back. Problem solved."

Well, considering that the engine room is never air conditioned, and the spaces get to be around 130*F in the summer, the engine gang is pretty used to hot temperatures, and just getting into an 80* space is a comfort.

So true. Dress to help stay cool. Forget the dress up in the evening. Personally, every cruise we ever took the ship was always cold.

I, too, being a thermometer and it has always been in the lower range.  I am one who is always cold and bring a jacket.  I have never been on a hot ship.

I have not been on a ship where the public areas are that hot, but I have had unbearably warm cabins on a couple cruises (the Valor and the Liberty). My most recent cruises preCOVID were on the Dream and Vista classes, and our cabins may have been warmer than I liked but bearable. Our section of the MDR in the Panorama last September was warmish, but the rest of the room was cool. I, too, bring a combo alarm clock/thermometer as well as a small fan.

I was also on the Horizon last week. When the casino was packed it was definitely quite warm in there. Some areas were certainly warmer than others but I didn't find anything unbearable, but I was never cold on any area of the ship. The weather was very warm so maybe that had something to do with it? Didn't have any problem keeping our cabin cool.

I agree 100% with the person who mentioned the food quality in the lido along with the lack of variety, the food was my biggest disappointment of the cruise.

acsfl...We sailed on the Horizon a few weeks ago in April and I totally agree with you, the interior common areas were hot every day and every night.  We ate lunch at Cucina and JiJi's (sweat was pouring down my face into my eyes), the Lido Marketplace area, especially in the aft, was unbearably warm and that is the buffet area that is open at night for dinner.  It was a little cooler in the first buffet area that you encounter when you enter from the mid-ship pool but not much.  The casino had warm and cool spots and I kept moving around until I found a cooler one.  We ate at the Pig & Anchor one night and it was warm in there also.  The Ocean Plaza area was very warm and we had to leave and sit outside where there was a nice breeze.  We ate in the MDR the first two nights and never went back because it was so uncomfortably hot.

My stateroom was on Deck 10 forward and was always nice and cool.  I also spent more time in my stateroom than I usually do on this trip just to cool down.   I am Diamond on Carnival and have sailed on all classes of Carnival ships and have never experienced this before.  I sailed on the Horizon in November 2021 and did not experience any hot areas on the ship at that time.

I forgot to also agree with other posters regarding the food quality in the Lido Marketplace.  When we sailed on the Horizon in November 2021, the food quality was far better than our recent April sailing.  I noticed more people getting food from the other food venues, i.e., Guy's Burgers, Blue Iguana Cantina, pizza, and the deli.  After a couple of days of mediocre, at best, buffet food, I also joined the people eating at other venues.

Breakfast at the buffet, for me, was the best option of the day because I always had freshly made omelettes or fresh eggs.  I drink chocolate milk and noticed that a staff member would come out and open a refrigerator under the milk display and take out two or three cartons at a time and put them out for consumption but they ran out of cartons of chocolate milk mid-cruise and were serving people chocolate milk from a pitcher??  I'm a bread lover but the rolls on this trip served in the buffet were hard as rocks and must have been standing out for a long time, the bread was so dry and had formed a hard crust and shattered when I took a bite.  I noticed a lot more "casserole type" dishes on this trip...food that my Mom would make to stretch a meal to feed our family, lots of mystery vegetables and goopy sauce to hide the lack of protein.

We ate dinner in the MDR the first two nights but never went back because it was so hot in our area, we only had the head waiter who was frantically trying to take care of all the tables in our area.  No one ever came around taking beverage orders even tho we asked, we had to ask for butter and rolls, the food that was supposed to be hot was cold and the food that was supposed to be cold, was warm.  We ordered dessert that never came and never served the coffee we ordered.  After the second night, we ate elsewhere.  I believe the service was a direct result of staff shortages.

The entertainment venues were also lacking on this cruise.  The piano bar entertainer was terrible, the live entertainers in the Pig & Anchor were awful, they cancelled the first show in the Liquid Lounge because of rough weather?? and a few singers came out and sat on stools in front of the closed curtain and sang songs, people were leaving the theater after 5 minutes, including our family, we waited in Ocean Plaza for over an hour for a Carnival employee to show up to conduct scheduled trivia games, they had the violin trio playing in the Atrium every night....people were sitting in chairs nodding off.  Where is the lively band that will energize people and make them feel good so they will purchase alcoholic beverages?  The girls playing the violins were very talented and nice to listen to during the day but at night, you want to get people dancing and drinking.

These are my takeaways only.  We still enjoyed the ship and had a good time but there certainly were issues that affected our cruise negatively.

I'm booked on the Horizon again in November, hope the issues we had on our April trip are fixed by then.
