We were surprised by how good the Mac and cheese was on the Discovery a couple months ago.  Agree, the chicken and waffles were good too.  We both thought the food was really good on the Discovery.

Can you please explain Chicken and Waffles to me? I've seen it listed but never had it. How is it eaten? What type of chicken is served with the waffle? To me waffles are breakfast food with maple syrup. I'm soooooo confused. 🤪

@Thrak, I assume you are not familiar with the Chain restaurant ‘ Roscoe’s House of Chicken and Waffles’. The chicken usually served is fried chicken. Very well known in Southern California. Soul food restaurant chain established in 1975.

Picture sweet and salty/savory combo.  Waffles are traditional,  chicken is fried.

Lots!

They only have one “special” a day.

Actual veggies for Omelets.

Cooked sides- tomatoes, mushrooms, potatoes, spinach

They offer BBQ beans and try to pass them off as breakfast beans.

Berries

Turkey/Veggie sausages

That’s just a starting point.

Holland America goes as far as offering an Indian breakfast on

You can ask for veggies and I also ask for a bagel with cream cheese in the mdr.  The breakfast buffet offers dozens of choices and huge amounts of fresh fruit.

We don't usually do MDR breakfast but, when we do, I tend to order OJ or Tomato Juice, Fruit Yogurt, and Eggs Benedict with Hollandaise on the side and a bottle of Tabasco. Once in a great while I ask for an omelet but they sometimes screw it up and give me the wrong ingredients so I tend to shy away from that option.

I have a few items that normally serve as my breakfast.

1. Toasted bagel with nothing on it. (I like them this way.)

2. Cold cereal of some kind (not very often)

3. Eggs with hot chili rings and garlic. I grow Fresno chilies. In the summer I eat them fresh but can't possibly eat them all so I "gut" them and then cut them into rings which I stick in baggies in the freezer. For the eggs I put butter into a small non-stick pan and layer it with hot chili rings. I add diced garlic and simmer for a while then add two beaten eggs. (I usually add onion powder to the eggs when beating.) I sprinkle a bit of Celery Salt on top and cook slowly until the eggs can be turned over as a single piece and then cook a bit more on that side to ensure they are done. My wife and kids think I'm crazy but I love eggs with hot peppers!

One thing I liked about our most recent cruises was that Princess offered Jalapeno peppers in their omelets and at the Salty Dog Grill. At least they were listed as Jalapenos but the little pepper rings were so tiny they looked more like Serrano peppers. (I've never seen Jalapenos that small...) I could get the chili rings in the buffet, at MDR breakfast in my omelet or, as I said above, at the Salty Dog Grill. When on Lido deck I put the chilis on my hamburger, tacos, etc. When I go pizza slices I would take them over to the grill area and put peppers on the pizza. I was utterly shocked to find the hot pepper readily available on a Princess ship. It's about time. I did see them one other time at the back portion of the buffet on Caribbean Princess. If you walked aft past the "regular" buffet to the Planks/Steamers area the breakfast buffet was continued there and they had hot peppers for omelets.

Your egg recipe sounds fantastic.

I’m not a fan of the breakfast buffet madness in the morning but thanks for the suggestion.

Can I get a full suite for $4,000 dollars on a 14 day cruise on a casino deal ?  That’s for 2 people.

Agree the special offers are outstanding.

The chicken is boneless, breaded and deep fried (like thick chicken tenders). It is served on top of waffles, which are drizzled with maple syrup. It sounds strange, but the maple syrup and breaded chicken combo works. Traditionally it is served with fried collard greens. There was a green leafy (but fried) veggie with the Princess version, but I don’t know if it was collard greens, or something like spinach.

We had pub menu offered last 3 sailings in 2023.

We recently cruised in Australia and New Zealand. The Fish in the Fish and Chips was disgusting. It was nothing at all like what we have had in the past. In the past it was a crispy, fried fish. The stuff we got in Australia and New Zealand was not crispy fried and was mushy and nasty. It didn't even seem to be "battered and deep fried". It had some sort of coating but it wasn't good. Hopefully that's not how it's going to be from now on.

This was my boggle. I simply could not imagine maple syrup on fried chicken. Perhaps I'll give it a try one day but I really prefer traditional fried chicken I pick up and eat with my hands like a barbarian.

Had it again for breakfast. I have a large supply of small bags of frozen pepper rings. 🥰

We have had the fish twice recently, on the Discovery excellent, Ruby was just like your description.

We didn't put syrup on the chicken, just the waffle.  Have had it twice, one time it was great, the other...hard pass.

If anyone has ordered toast - it is the worst. It arrives cold and the butter blend (with margarine) tastes awful on it.

Have you even noticed at the butter they serve at the buffet is much better that the stuff in the DR's. We complained & asked for the waiter for "butter" & were told they just don't have it there, so we started to bring butter from the buffet each evening. The blend they serve in the DR is just plain tasteless and awful.

I have seen what looked to be real butter on the buffet...   And, yes.. bring it to the MDR!!!

There is one video out where they 'solve the dispute', and ask the staff onboard about the butter...  they are 'reassured' that the butter is real butter that is whipped.   I don't necessarily buy that!

If anyone would like to see what many of these lunch menus and dishes look like, here is a video link:

I don't think it has been posted here yet.  Yes, it shows the chicken and waffles!

I am new to the Princess cruise, and will be on the Sun Princess in March. Do they serve lunch in the MDR on port days? If not, is the buffet the only place to grab lunch on Port days?

I guess lunch is available in the MDR on Sea Days for sure, is that right?

Thank you!

Yes - the blend is horrible! I completely agree.

The pub lunch was only offered in the buffet and was horrible. The coating was thick and rubbery.  The fish was over cooked and dry. This was what I experienced on my 19 day Emerald sailing Aug/Sept 2023 and my 34 day Sapphire sailing Dec 2023/ Jan 2024. Really disgusting.  Why do they bother?  And what kind of person actually eats this?  How can anyone find that palatable?

I believe that it is every day. Although the first embarkation lunch is still different from this menu.

On all the ships we have sailed on, the MDR is only open on sea days.  The Sun Princess might be different.  Besides the buffet on the Sun,  you can get food at the International Cafe which is shown on Deck 9 on the deck plan and some other walk-up places on Deck 17

We do too! We were confused on our recent cruise at first when it looked like the same menu the second time, but then we realized that there were a few differences. After about 4 days, we did try the deck pizza/lunch buffet combo for lunch the next time, but eventually came back to the MDR.

Same for us. But on our recent Regal NYE cruise, I *think* that the MDR was open for lunch every day. We had to miss a port, and an hour or 2 later the MDR was open for lunch... I don't think that would happen unless they had already been planning to open for lunch.

It's possible that this is why the lunch menu was standardized... they wanted to be able to open the MDR for lunch every day, and it's easier when the menu items are basically the same every day? Just a thought.
