Identity of Cruise Director, Concierge, etc.

Hi Rosetta, I used to work for Norwegian on the ships, and they, like several other large cruise lines, like to shuffle people around when spaces are empty. My boss was on every American ship within two months. I have another friend who works for RC that has literally been on every ship but one since he started working for them 6 months ago. Transfers to other ships if often sudden, when people get sick, quit, or have an emergency at home, they rush people in and with little warning. The best thing to do is look and see if someone has been on the cruise the trip before you and see if you can find who's on the ship that week. Have Fun!

John just took over the Concierge position on the Jewel in August. He was promoted from a butler on the Star. :)

Wow...so they (NCL, I mean) really do promote from within? I would imagine that going from butler to concierge is a good step up, no?

He was the sole concierge on the cruise--which I assume (I've no prior experience with this) is standard, just one concierge to handle all suites, villas, and such?

John seemed to be everywhere at once, and although he wasn't able to grant our every wish--for instance, my husband asked if he would be able to reserve a table at Cagney's for lunch and John explained that for lunch, Cagney's is available to all suite pax on a first come, first served basis, particularly since it's open only from 12 to 1:30--he was always, always accessible and on several occasions very helpful.

It can't be an easy job. :o

That could have worked out not to be a big problem though. I've had access on the Dawn and 3 times on the Pearl. Ate there just about every breakfast and lunch on those sailing and I doubt we ever saw it more than half full on those ships (of course maybe we were just lucky)

I guess suite pax were Cagney-conscious on our cruise. :) The reason my husband ended up asking John about a reservation was that the second time we arrived for lunch there were no tables for two available, and people at those tables had pretty much just begun to eat (we of course would not want to make anyone self-conscious by hanging out nearby); the hostess seated us at a table for six, and she kept it for us alone, which was very nice of her but under the circumstances made me feel as if I were hogging the space.

So I guess that's why DH asked John about reservations. The next time we ate at Cagney's, my husband phoned me in the suite and told me to meet him there--it was 11:48, and I told him he was crazy! But he wanted to make sure he got a table for two, and of course he did. We ate early, but since I hadn't really had breakfast, it was fine. Within twenty minutes (by around 12:25), the place was full.

I think John explained that the reason Cagney's is open for only a relatively short window of time for b'fast and for lunch is the fact that it's complimentary to suite pax--it's a perk, not a normal operation for what is typically a nighttime steakhouse for specialty diners. That's also why reservations are not accepted for b'fast or lunch.

On the three occasions we ate there, the place filled up within 20 to 40 minutes. So I guess it was pretty popular on our cruise. :D

Do you recall the hours for b'fast and lunch in Cagneys?

Lunch was 12 to 1:30; that I remember.

Breakfast I can't remember, because I never made it to Cagney's for b'fast. I took a look at their breakfast menu, brought to me by our waiter when we had lunch there one day, and it was scrumptious! But since I'm not much of a big b'fast eater in general, I never made note of the time it was open for b'fast. Sorry~

Best, Sona

Yes, NCL does promote from within. John is the 5th bulter we have had that has been promoted to Concierge. Karan Aurora, Ryan Rabe, Anshuman Sumbli, Anoop & now John D'Souza. Way to go guys!!!!!

We had the pleasure of John being our butler on the Dawn in Sep 2009 and on this Sunday, the pleasure to have him as our Concierge.

Happy Sailing

Monty

Just back from the Gem! Ruth Hagger is the current concierge - and is a true "gem". Just a small correction. The current Cruise Director, who came on board with us, is Jaime, a young, energetic woman from Montreal, Canada. Sorry I didn't catch her last name. If you are on the Gem in the next few weeks, you are in for a treat. :)

Enjoyed having Ruth as a concierge on the Pearl. It will be nice to have someone with fresh ideas as the CD. We'll meet her Saturday! :)

Last week's Management Staff on the Epic (10/9/2010 - 10/16/2010)

Denis Prguda, Hotel Director

Richard Janicki, Asst. HD

Helmut Spitzbart, F&B Director

Meica Maiana, Ex. Housekeeper

Julie Valeroite, Entertainment Director

Irma Reyes, Guest Services Manager

Charles Fernandes, Ex. Chef

Serhat Kati, Restaurant Manager

Silas Cook, Cruise Director

I think there may have been a change in the Cruise Director this week. I asked several of the staff and got two different names. FYI: The job on the Epic is so large, that responsibilities are split between the CD and the Entertainment Director. The ED is more behind the scenes, but I did see Julie out and about on occasion, including a performance with the staff at the Mama Mia show at Spice H20. She may have hosted Dancing with the Epic Stars, a show I heard was quite entertaining, but we had a conflict with one of the reserved shows. I think it was held at 10 pm on Thursday.

I am wondering where Adrian Bica will be going after he returns from vacation. Preparing to book a cruise on Monday and will book according to where he will be. I heard he was returning to the Jewel on Nov 7, 2010 - does anyone know if this is true? Also trying to find out if Garreth will be returning to the Jewel as Casino Manager..

Is John Ibrahim just on vacation or did he really leave NCL? Anyone know where he went?

I heard from a friend who is a crew member currently on the Sky that John Ibrahim is no longer with NCL. I will be on the Sky in a few weeks and will try to get further confirmation.
