Thank you RustaRoo:D

How much is it per glass if you don't have a card?

They start at about $4.50 and go up to about $18 - $20, I think.

Would not buying by the bottle as needed be cheaper?

They start at about $27 and go up into the hundreds.

Word to the wise,

You want to wait until you get onboard (and presumably in international waters) before purchasing the wine card. On a recent Mexico cruise we purchased the card in San Diego right after checking in, but before boarding. They added sales tax on there.

I believe that's why the duty-free shop and the casino is not open for most of the first day, they have to wait until they get into international waters. Anyway, they try to make it seem like you can't purchase the wine card onboard, which obviously isn't the case.

I've heard that a couple of times, for both CA and FL, but yet when you order from the HAL site you do NOT pay any sales tax.

We ended up buying 3 twenty glass wine cards for our 34 day Sydney to Osaka cruise on the Statendam in March. We used them for the "house" merlot at dinner and the per glass cost was $3.88. We were pleased with the deal!

I agree........ $3.88 per glass of wine (assuming it was at least minimally drinkable) is a very good price. One cannot expect a premium wine for that price but does expect to be able to swallow it with some enjoyment...or why bother ordering it.

I don't know any restaurant at home I can buy a house wine for $3.88 per glass.

I totally agree Sail and actually I would not mind paying two punches for a premium. I may have to check into seeing if they would consider doing 2 punches for a Henkle:D Last weekend we took our son to dinner for his birthday and I had a glass of champagne and it was $17.00 for one glass:eek: Now I will say it was very good but..... I really feel the prices HAL charges for wine and champagne is really not overly priced and many that complain are comparing to buying it by the bottle at a discount liquor store which IMO is not fair. Go to any fine dining esptablishment in any large city and see how much a glass of wine or a bottle of wine actually costs. That goes for cocktails as well. Maybe living in Las Vegas I am a bit more aware of what drinks cost but I am always pleased with the pricing on HAL.

Just wish some people would read all theads and not just the ones that appeal to them.

:confused::confused::confused:

Allow me to venture a guess.... those on this forum who read ALL THREADS are in the minority.

I have neither the time, nor the desire to do so.

THIS poster appreciates SakeDad's "heads-up". The title appealed to me. :)

And we do have people here who to choose read only certain people's threads (not necessarily you - but you do have me wondering about that after your comment). (And there are also some people here who have blocked out others and have chosen not to read anything they say - I am not one of them. I enjoy reading what everyone has to say and I don't always respond to everyone.)

Those of us who have cruised HAL over the years always try to talk about the latest developements (inclusing wine cards, etc) so as to keep others informed.

Which is precisely the reason that I was glad to read SakeDad's post.... It was an INFORMATIVE post.

(to those of us who've never had a wine card and might be considering one)

I guess that I didn't understand your statement about "wishing some people would read all threads". I don't think that's a reasonable thing, kiddo.:o

I don't agree with a lot of your posts, NoNo, but this time I'm with you! :D Why should I read a thread with a subject on which I have no interest or knowledge? (Just one current example: Sportfishing in Alaska.) Unless the thread strays badly off-topic ... as this one now has ... then it's just a waste of my time.

And yet another thing is I may have read a thread 3 or maybe 6 months ago but unless something effected me at that time I may not have retained what I read, that is not to say I did not read thre thread, it just means that at the time I read it, it did not apply but this time I will be going on the same ship as Sakedad and since I caught that the card stated champagne I now was ever so slightly interest so I asked a question. It does not imply that I did not read about it many months ago it just means it now applies to something I am interested in.

I too read about the wine cards on the HAL website and had no confusion that the cards were for house wines.

DH and I bought the Navigator's Package of bottles ordered for dinner. It was amazing, and we fell in love with the Riesling. ;) Do they still do the Admiral's and Navigator's wine packages?

I guess my confusion came NOT from the fact it was only good for house wines but that the dinner menu in the Vista has wines by the glass but didn't seperate house from premium. As they didn't ask for payment until after dinner they couldn't say at the time I ordered that my card wouldn't cover the glass I ordered. No biggie, just wanted to share with others before they find out on the ship the hard way.:D

As Grumpy1 said, "If it's listed by name on the menu, it isn't a house wine", whether you're on a ship or in a land restaurant. And yes, that includes any Chardonnays, Pinot Grigios, Merlots, etc. that are on the menu. On my next cruise, though, I'm going to ask if they will give me a premium wine for 2 punches!

John, I will let you know because I plan to ask. I will be reporting Live from the Noordam starting the 16th in Seattle. By plan this cruise is to just have ther Henkle Champagne/ Sparkling splits and I plan to ask if I can use 2 punches for these. If I buy the 20 punch card it will be a small savings but a savings none the less. I also think I will have no problem drinking 10 of these:D

I'm in total agreement with NoNoNanette! The title has to appeal.

Not all of us have the time or inclination to plod thru repetitive posts. Personally I tend to read the first page, it's usually informative, and then skip on to make a comment. Of course I'd read of wine cards before but, going on a short cruise was not overly interested. We're now thinking a longer journey, hence our interest.

Comparison with 'on shore' establishment prices does not, in my opinion, hold water. Such places are paying taxes - ships, as I understand it are not.

We've cruised for long enough to remember 'the good old days' - Duty Free meant what it said! Cigarettes are cheaper on board - why not liquor?

Perfume and cosmetics also are items usually way overpriced on board - buying in a Duty Free Store, in either Canada or the USA, is very frequently cheaper than buying on board.

I'll await the flames!;)

The wine packages aren't for 6 bottles anymore. They are for 5 bottles.

LOL, Thanks. I understood that with the other posting. :-) We'll still order the 5 bottle package (and who knows, maybe a 3 bottle package as well ;)
