galavant3 Posted May 10, 2008 #226 Share Posted May 10, 2008 I had no idea so many people were thrown off cruises! I've seen lots of posts from people traveling with older children. We've cruised many times with our children and one of our many rules is that under no circumstance are we to be separated while in port. We've seen enough to know that older teens can get into a lot of trouble and danger in some ports. This also applies to kids in their 20's. If they want to travel with us, they have to agree. smeyer418 Posted May 10, 2008 #227 Share Posted May 10, 2008 I think it's because many cruisers fit the demographic for heart attacks and strokes - age group, many overweight, etc. While the deaths on every cruise is a slight exaggeration, they do happen fairly often but many times the person who dies is truly otherwise healthy. Don't think its always the 90 year who brought an oxygen tank aboard...
Rare Morgsmom Posted May 10, 2008 #228 Share Posted May 10, 2008 We, too, personally saw some teen boys being arrested and (obviously denied reboarding) in Ocho Rios for trying to smuggle pot back onboard in the bottom of a Pringles Can... Those dogs had better noses than these kids anticipated!!
Cuizer2 Posted May 10, 2008 #229 Share Posted May 10, 2008 Does anyone watch America's Port (Monday night - Nat Geo channel)? A 19 year old got caught with pot. Fortunately for him the amount was so small that it was destroyed in the testing, so he was not arrested. However, he got his fifteen minutes of fame and not in a positive way. Math teacher Posted May 10, 2008 #230 Share Posted May 10, 2008 I was searching you tube and I am not sure if this is that exact situation but it sure does look probable. :-) http://youtube.com/watch?v=Bvcy2F-m5uE Hmm, maybe this is why I keep reading posts about a shortage of deck chairs What a bunch of jerks to do that. I hope they got caught and had to pay for them!

Yes, I saw it and they made it quite plain that had the small amount of pot not been destroyed in the testing, he would have had to pay a $5,000 fine. He was one lucky kid at that point. I'm sure his parents were impressed.

I hope they got caught and had to pay for them! A comment below the video said they were thrown off the ship in the next port. It looks like they could have hit the people on the deck below if their aim was bad. Glad they were thrown off.

julieanne Posted May 11, 2008 #235 Share Posted May 11, 2008 I guess I will chime in here! A young man who we met on the boards and who dined with us at our table was put ashore in the Azores, last April. He created quite a disturbance in the casino and attempted to hit several security guards. He was put under house arrest and disembarked the next morning before the passengers. We saw him leave, people from our group saw him taken out of the casino by security and I spoke with him when we returned home. It was very strange watching port security come in to search his cabin with drug dogs (he was down the hall from us)..........
chasetf Posted May 12, 2008 #236 Share Posted May 12, 2008 Really? Is this because people of questionable health go on cruises anyway? Or is there some other cause? How about old age. ;)
rjburd Posted May 12, 2008 #237 Share Posted May 12, 2008 Sometimes when you open yourself up for others, you get burned. As sad as it is, it makes it hard for people to do nice things for others without consequence. Like when someone is having a heart attack and someone performs CPR on them and cracks a rib, people have the audacity to sue for their cracked rib, despite the person saved their life. FYI, this did not happen to me or anyone I know, just heard of instances of this. There are Good Samaritan Laws/Acts in North America and, I believe, Canada that protect people from blame when aiding others who are injured or ill. Not in every US State. it varies by individual state also the extent of the protection also varies- there is no uniform Federal US law and the US constitution probably wouldn't allow it, but I have no doubt that most juries would just toss the case any way. It is true that good Samaritan laws vary by state. However, don't count on a jury to "toss" the case. People have been successfully sued after saving someone's life because of the injuries cases will doing so. And I am referring to injuries caused while saving the life, not the actions that lead to the lift threatening injuries in the first place. karkee07 Posted September 19, 2008 #242 Share Posted September 19, 2008 What morons throw deck chairs off?!?!?! I've seen people leave the ship. But I think it was for medical reasons. Last time we we're in Cozumel it took us a while to leave, not sure why. I feel horrible for Lori! Congrats on being able to take cruises again! In June 2008 my family and my brothers girlfriend's family of whom we are all close with for a couple yeats, took a week long trip to the Outer Banks. After much consideration, My boyfriend and I planned on driving down later in the week becuase he wasn't able to get off the whole week from work(thats what happens when you work for global compianes, lol). I got a call from my mom a few days into the trip saying that the boyfriend of the oldest daughter was causing a ton of problems. We weren't supprised becuase he was one of the reasons I didn't want to go in the first place. He is violent, mean and abusive, so on and so forth. My mom even told the other family that we were worried abotu him messing up our vacation. I am not going to go into detail of what all he did, and has done since then. But the parents of the gf let him act this way and they know what they get themselves into everytime this kid comes around. Although we had a great vacation, it would have been much better without a compleat dick coming along. Why I am telling this is because we were also considering a cruise, but we would have had to fly down from Ohio to FLA, and it was too expenisve for the other family with 7 of them. Needless to say, this kid would have been kicked off the ship. That would have been a lovely sight.....:p
Krazy Kruizers Posted September 19, 2008 #243 Share Posted September 19, 2008 Years ago there were fans of the Philadelphia Flyers on our cruise. They got caught smoking marijuna. We were on the Cunard Countess and they were put off the ship in Barbados. Barbados gave them 24 hours to get off their island or be arrested. SeaTeach Posted October 14, 2010 #250 Share Posted October 14, 2010 Was on a ship when a mentally challenged young man thought it would be great fun to phone in a man over board call. Problem is he gave his name and room number. So after turning the ship around (to go back to area of the call-in), checking the entire ship for a head count, and putting a life boat in the water...all was well. Yes we arrived in Ocho a little late, but guess who was there on the docks with luggage....mom and the boys, along with grandma and grandpa.
