Can you surrender? if I have 16 and the dealer is showing a 10

I've never seen surrender, where you only lose 1/2 your bet if done, offered on RCI ships.

I've played a lot of blackjack over several decades and if "bad play" by other players at your table bothers you, be ready to be annoyed. Very weak basic game strategy (as typically spelled out by aforementioned tip cards) is more prevalent on cruises. People afraid to hit on 12/13 with a dealer 10 or my favorite....SPLITTING 5s against a dealer 6.

Isn't the BJ payout 6-5 on the single deck game?

Yes, 6 to 5 on single deck and 3 to 2 on the multi deck.

I have mixed feelings on the splitting of 5s against a 6. Book says double, but I like putting more money out on the table so I will occasionally take gamble that ill pull another 5 and get a third hand out of it. The only downside is you're pulling more cards.

I agree. This is the reason I typically don't play BJ unless with a group of friends who are playing to have fun.

I've never understood how winning at blackjack depends so much on the skill of the other players at the table. So what if they play stupidly? :confused:

I have played a lot in my lifetime. Now only a little. But the "stupid" players help you as much as hurt you. What happens is in the long run they should lose. But luck dictates that.

In Blackjack no matter how good you are. Without luck you are going to lose.

I once was playing single deck on a ship, with 5 other players. I was in 3rd base (last) The dealer is supposed to deal 2 hands then shuffle (you have to watch them on this one, sometimes they try to shuffle after one hand). Very few 10 value cards in the first hand. The second hand again just a few. It come to me dealer had a 3 showing I had a pair of 7s I had $50 bet. Their were 9 or 10 ten value cards left, with very few cards in her hand. I split the 7s got one ten and a small card 5 or 6. The dealer flips her hole card it was a 9. At this time I wished I had every dime I owned on this hand. The dealer pulls a 2 got me a little worried. Then proceeds to pull a 5. Beating me on both hands. I thought I must have suffered brain fade or something. I asked to see the next card. She fanned what she had in her hand. And there they were 8 ten value cards in a row. That hand taught me more than all the books ever printed.

This post is spot on. No surrender option. Dealer pays 3-2 for blackjack. 6-5 at single deck tables. Continuous electronic card shuffler at tables having a $10 minimum. Hand shuffle for 6-deck tables with a $25+ minimum.

The idea that poor Blackjack players affect the odds is a gambler's fallacy. I cause a lot of trouble when I want to make daring bets for funsies. Mostly I play the math, though, and cheer or console my fellow comrades whatever decisions they make.

Long time BJ player here, and long time student of the game.

"Stupid play" by other players may be annoying, but it helps the table as often as it hurts.

In the long run, no effect.

 

Of all the games in the casino, BJ has more superstitions and superstitious players than any other.

 

Short term anecdotes notwithstanding, in the long run, it's you against the dealer, and anything that anyone else does at the table is irrelevant.

Exactly! Which is why "wrong play" does not bother me in the least. I love it. It keeps the casino in business, which allows me to keep playing my own game.

I admit it, even though I know it's a mathematical certainty I'll lose in the long run, I still enjoy a little blackjack here and there :). But the "bad players" messing up the table thing is just silly superstition.

I agree with all of the above except that Blackjack players are the most superstitious. Ever played at a Craps table......now you'll find some right whackos. Reasons for losing : the "table is too bouncy & effects the outcome of the dice", the "cocktail waitress asked me if I wanted a drink during a roll", the "stickman changed", they "put a fill of chips on the table". I could go on but I'd be here all night.......

I disagree, blackjack is a team sport. All players against the dealer. When someonedoesn't hit or stay when they 'should' it does affect your cards.
