On Board Credit...

My wife says "on board credit" on Oceania can only be used in the gift shops. I say it can be used for more useful things like cocktails and beer or even excursions.

 

Am I right? Hope so. Another G/T please bar keep.

When many of us have a lot of OBC still unspent at the end of the cruise, THAT is when we go to the shop! Sometimes we buy a lot of chocolate or aspirin ... maybe a Gucci bag we'd never buy at home ... and so on! I might buy a nice blouse or dress if they had anything in my size ...

 

You certainly are not restricted to ONLY purchases in the shop. These are for purchases made ON BOARD. That can be drinks, a ship's tour, etc.

I don't think that is accurate.

 

The O cabin bathrobes can also be purchased as can the transfer from the ship to the airport on that dark day when the cruise ends.

DW got a nice set of Ruby and Diamond stud earrings on Nautica in April. "O" paid 3/4 of the cost with non refundable OBC and some good negotiation with the seller/designer.

Question for all you FP cruisers, both "O" and PG. we've cruised a lot and for the most part larger ships (50,000-120,000 GRT). These ships are equipped with stabilizers and so forth to help provide for a smoother ride. Wife is fine; however, I have a problem when the wave action gets it rocking and rolling. We caught the tail end of hurricane Nicole coming from Boston to Baltimore and it was a a rough 16 hours. I use predominantly the sea bands and carry Bonnie with me. So there is the background, the question is with both of these being much smaller ships is it more usual to experience the sea action? Of course understand if there are storms it could get rough no matter what. I am more concerned about the routine day to day sailing.

It is my understanding that the PG being purpose built for the FP area has a flatter hull than a normal cruise ship, mainly to get in the shallower areas. Either of the Oceania ships should give you a smoother ride than the PG in rough waters. Having said that depending on your itinerary in FP you may not run into rough seas.

 

Also, I think how well a ship takes the rough waters is dependent on the design, not necessarily the size. I could be wrong on this, someone more knowledgeable can feel free to correct me.

I think you may be right

ships/boast with a deeper keel will ride better than a flat bottom boat/ship

A twin hull will be even better I think ;)

 

think of sail boat in bumpy seas compared to a motor boat ..one glides through the water the other bounces :D

You are totally correct......... But be polite and tell your wife it can be used in the gift shop too...

Any on board credit can be used for ANY Oceania product that you can purchase on the ship, shore excursions included. Gratuities, laundry, a bottle of wine. drinks package,

 

It cant be spent off the ship for any non O billed activities...... so enjoy the gift.

Ships of 50,000+ tons may be small to toy when compared to the massive aircraft carrier size of many of the ships today. They are big ships in reality... The stabilizers need about 10+ kts to fully be effective for roll, but not yaw or pitch. How a ship feels or responds is a function of wind, waves current and the length of time they are exposed to them.

 

A lighter ship may respond sooner than a larger one due to its mass. However given a few hours more exposure even the largest ships aflaot will respond exactly the same... same roll same pitch as a lighter one. after time.

 

So, there is really not much difference as after say 5 hours in the same sea conditions both large and small will be the same. Larger in not better because of its larger weight, when the sea calms the larger ship will take longer to calm down...l.pure inertia derived from the heavier weight developing more kinetic energy.

 

Think positive, realize that the ocean is a constantly moving and changing thing, you have to realize that any ship in any ocean is going to exhibit some form of motion...

can you tell me more about the transfer from the ship to the airport?

or guide me to someplace on the website that talks about it?

we will have OBC that we dont really want to blow in the gift shop on stuff we dont really want.

this is only my second cruise and my mom and i are wondering how to get from the ship (riviera) to the airport (rome).

ideally we wanted to see some of the vatican without dragging along our luggage but we arent sure how to do that either.

last time we stayed an extra day so we just kept luggage at our hotel.

Our first cruise on Marina back in Oct '11 left from Rome. We spent a few days in Rome beforehand and used FacileTaxi for the transfer to the ship which we shared with two other couples we found on our Roll Call. http://www.faciletaxi.com

 

For the transfer from the airport to Rome we used RomeCabs <info@romecabs.com> Both were very reasonably priced.

 

It's a longish drive from central Rome to Civitavecchia but this is a comfortable way to go. If you don't mind dragging luggage you can also take the train, but the car service is far more comfortable. JMO! (We haven't down the train transfer ourselves, just read about it here.)

 

It's not clear to me when you would want to see the Vatican ... if at the end of the cruise I'd think the best bet would be to stay in Rome for one night (at least!), tour the Vatican, and then transfer to the airport for your return home. You could NOT do it by transfer from the ship to Rome and then transfer to the airport. At least not in one day ...

 

Maybe I'm missing something!

our cruise ends in rome (civitavecchia)

we were hoping to be able to see st peter's basilica before our flight.

we saw A LOT of rome on our last cruise. so much so that we didnt eat anything all day because we were running from one attraction to anothe, but we missed that part of the vatican. we realize it might be a long shot to fit that in and it sounds like youre saying it cant really be done. it was back in 2013 and i honestly dont remember how we even got to the train station anymore and we didnt fly out of rome so i dont even know where the airport is.

 

Classiccruiser777 mentioned something about using our OBC to purchase a transfer from the ship to the airport. i was wondering what the details are for that.

Use your OBC for other things on the ship...spa, gratuities, etc.

 

I am not sure what time your flight it, but Rome Cabs does offer a day excursion into Rome and they keep your luggage with them/you in the car. Yes, going into Rome and then going back to the airport is going out of the way from Civitavecchia, but if you have the time and the means, go for it!

thanks. definitely going to use it for gratuities but we are in a port every day of the cruise so we wont have time for the spa (such a rough life!!)

cruise isnt until next year so we dont even have out flight yet but i was hoping if we got a red-eye that we might be able to see st peters.

i looked and it says there arent excursions on the last day unless you are going on another cruise................ otherwise that would be ideal.

still wondering what the transfer from the ship to the airport is though.

 

edit: just realized you meant our own excursion not from oceania

Near the end of the cruise Oceania will send a form to the cabin with options for disembarking also a place to book airport transfers these will go direct to the airport

They may have excursions that will drop you at the airport after the tour depending on your flight arrangements

Are you using Oceania air or doing your own?

 

How much OBC are we talking here??
