Huge ego on you sir. Or are you just overstating your cruising experience? By all means, as an experienced cruiser I'd love to read your respectful take on the matter. As someone who worked in security for a long time, I also have a perspective. You're welcome to dismiss mine, but as a veteran cruiser surely you can offer something to support your position.

To start off with you dismissed the security personnel involved with the video in question, as inept, touting your 20 years of security experience. You later reveal your "security experience" evolved from being a bouncer at 18.

The security personnel aboard NCL ships are, for the most part, former Ghurka Soldiers. They deal with with alot more than drunk and disorderly idiots in a bar situation. They also deal with between 2,000 and 4,000 people, depending on the ship, in a very closed environment. This does not even include their security duties pertaining to the the crew.

If you go back and look at the video they were dealing with a belligerent drunk over some kind of theft or non payment issue. They were also having to deal with a bunch of other drunks that thought they knew how to handle the situation. I think their patience in letting things slowly calm down was brilliant. As they were about to neutralize the problem another passenger jumped in to put a head lock on the guy which re-escalated the whole thing causing the tumble into the hot tub. After they got around that little mishap and had the guy in custody there was still that other idiot that wanted to hand out his own justice.

Just a few observation from a non security person. But, I have seen a few situations similar to this and they can become very volatile if handled in a rushed manner. The crowd could easily turn on the "good guys" if they think something is not quite right. Just look at the Occupy movement of a couple years ago.

Most cruise ships are not US flagged ships. No US civil law. We all sign a contract before we sail saying we will abide by behavioral laws. This guy obviously was not.

Not correct. As an American citizen you do not give up your civil rights to a foreign company doing business in the USA—even on a foreign flagged vessel transporting you in international waters or other foreign jurisdiction. Please read NCL’s 10-K financial statements where they footnote the civil actions brought against them in US courts.

Also, case in point—Carnival is being sued by US citizens in a US court over the sinking of the Costa Concordia—an Italian flagged vessel operating in Italian waters.

I find it funny that this situation is blamed on "Spring Break".

Based on the verbal "skills" of the VAST majority of the people in that video the closest any of them ever came to a college was driving past one.

Heh, you'd be surprised at the "verbal skills" of a lot of college students, especially the ones who spend their spring break drunk on a cruise ship.

Nope, not a lot of ego here, just 25 years of cruising experience. Most all of that experience is with NCL, which is why you do not find me posting about other lines. Also, I have almost 18 years of experience with Cruise Critic. I do not spend a lot of time "attacking" things before knowing all the facts and surrounding back drop information.

But, I am sure Mr. Unknown is happy you are here to defend his honor by taking pot shots at me in his stead. Yea, you!

Well i have 35 yrs of cruising and over 55 cruises. Big deal.

Here is the important question, what kind of animal is that chick that jumped in the hot tub after the drunk left. You have to KNOW that water is at least 75% urine after he was done.

I thought that was odd too. My first thought was "you do not want to be in there!" I guess she did. Those poor security officers that fell in. Ew.

I don't doubt they are suing in US courts, but are any of them winning ?????? How many are being dismissed because the US courts have no jurisdiction ?????

Bingo. You can file a lawsuit against anyone for anything, but that doesn't mean you're going to get very far with it :p

Especially when the contract requires mediation rather than court.

You fail to mention where security allowed one passenger to deliver a right cross to the drunk which knocked him back to where he dove back into the pool. I think it was mentioned that he split his lip (as the guy looked at his knuckles).

While I agree security did a fair job they failed in the aspect of containing it to one individual. They should have never let him get assaulted by a fellow passenger. With being in the pool area, the best method was to wait it out and distance the problem crowd from the individual. Draining the pool is not the answer either, if the drunk decides to make a run for it and slips on the pool ladder or on a leap up to the pool edge falls back and cracks his skull then we have a legal issue.

And if I was to take security advice from someone, it'd be someone who dealt with people that are mainly unruly. Not someone that cruised with other people, I mean really? Does that mean you know more about your car than a qualified mechanic because you drive it everyday?

As someone said earlier, that didn't look like a typical spring break/college crowd.

Not that any of that matters. A few people being stupid doesn't condemn the vast majority who aren't.

So, just wondering, what happens to a passenger who is drunk, disorderly, perhaps a thief? Are they put in the ship's jail for the duration of the cruise and prosecuted once the cruise is over? Or, are they put off the ship at the nearest port and told to find their own way home?

In either case, the guy in question must have woke up the next day (where ever he was taken to) and had a bad hangover, and probably was pretty sore from being bounced around in the hot tub, the pool, punched, and cuffed.

My understanding is that there is a no tolerance policy against physical violence aboard cruise ships. The'd be escorted off the ship at the next possible port. If they are in port, like the couple who tried to steal art work off the ship, or people who get caught smoking pot, they're prosecuted by the local authorities, jailed, fined etc. The person is then responsible for all costs to get home on their own, and banned from sailing on the cruise line again.

I would hope the passenger who assaulted the drunk and any others who were physically violent would also be ejected from the ship.

I'm sure expert with chime in with a definitive experienced answer :)

am I the only one concerned with what appears to be a lack of security officers? this could have gotten ugly for the ship staff really quick if things took a turn for the worse with other people jumping into the fight. were there no other officers to radio for assistance? this is why I never book a quick 3 or 4 day cruise. the cheaper prices on the smaller ships attract passengers that act like this.

gem 1 nighter in April I was on my way to Cagney's around 1:15 pm and watched a couple have sex in the hot tub, i pointed it out to the waitress at the beer bucket stand, her response, "oh that happens all the time". You won't catch me dead in 1 of them, who knows what kind of disease you would pick up. But all I can say about them is damn what kind of skank are you that you can't wait until 2 pm and do it in your room?
