Just off the Wind

Having just returned from the Venice to Rome cruise on the Wind, I can reassure everyone that the ship is in fine condition and the staff, service, food and wine were all up to the traditional Silversea standards.

My wife and I had a wonderful cruise with interesting destinations, but the jewel in the crown was Kotor - what a beautiful and fascinating place to visit.

Colin Brown was the Cruise Director and he made the time on board great fun - especially the Trivia sessions!

The Artists of Silversea provided some excellent shows - I am sorry that their contact is about to end. We did miss the Poolside BBQ and entertainment - can't quite understand why this has been discontinued.

So glad to hear you had a wonderful voyage...thank you for your post.

Yes, the sail in and out of Kotor is lovely. What did you do while in Kotor? We have been there once before on a cruise, will be there later this year and are looking for ideas/suggestions.

Sounds like our cruise on the wonderful Wind just a few weeks ago. We did have the poolside BBQ though and no mention they were going to stop doing it.

As it was our first visit, we took the walking tour around the old town, which we found very interesting and illuminating. Other guests went further afield and came back stimulated by the wonderful scenery. It was a very hot day, so we decided that the climb up to the little church and the castle, behind the old town, was many steps too far! Maybe it will be cooler when you visit and I am sure that the view must be worth the climb.

The scenery inbound to the port is simply stunning.

We were under the impression that US Health regulations meant they could no longer hold the BBQ. Maybe we were misinformed??

We were on the Wind from 10 - 28 May on two 9-day back-to-back cruises. One of the repeat ports was Kotor which we thoroughly enjoyed. The poolside BBQ was held in Kotor on both legs. The first one was rained out so they moved the grills to the back deck outside the La Terrazza and carried on best they could. The second visit the weather was perfect and we had the full blown BBQ poolside. Now things change and maybe a new regulation went into effect recently or they became aware they were in violation of some existing regulation but just barely over a month ago we had the BBQ and no mention it was being discontinued. I do know that Holland America recently had to make changes to their self-service stations in their Neptune Lounges to add "sneeze guards" over an area where passengers could help themselves to snacks. Maybe this caught up with Silversea as the food choices at the BBQ were obviously fully exposed.

I believe USPHS is also the reason that Tea was moved from the Panorama to the Terrace. Bummer.

I, for one, prefer tea in Terrazza. There are a lot more two-tops (only two in Panorama) and also four and six tops. The table tops are also more ample to hold the tea, sandwiches, pastry, etc.

Whatever the reason, I like the change!

Hello Bean Jar.

We are joining later this month, besides the CD, who is the Captain, HD, Chef, Cruise consultant and Maître D please. Can you remember what was on the nearly always available dinner menu. pleased she is in good shape. Shame about the afternoon tea. Liked to sit in the lounge prior to the tea service with a glass of Champagne and a book. Will now have to move to Terrace...not such a good ambience for English afternoon tea. It would be interesting to see if Cunard etc have to move their Teas

My Lord,

I will help as far as I can.

The Captain was the charismatic Michele Macarone Palmieri, now resplendent with a neat nautical beard. The HD was Helmut Huber and the Maitre D was Antonio.

As far as I remember the 'always available' menu was pretty standard - I really had no cause to examine the left hand side of the menu throughout the cruise.

Please say Hi to Nikki in the bar - she is married to the bar tender and is great fun. She will remember me as the Brit who always asked for Calvados with ice after dinner. Another character was Ace - a waiter with a huge sense of humour. Tell him I was the Tiki man - Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand.

I hope you enjoy the cruise as much as we did.

We leave this Friday for Barcelona and join Wind next Tuesday....we love Barcelona for a couple of back to backs. We will certainly pass on your greetings and hope to give you a current on board insight. Wind is still our favourite (first sailing on her in 1995) with Whisper second and Cloud third. We have sailed twice with the current Captain, and he has always been superb. Cannot see him in a beard! Helmet we met on Whisper last year and was very effective and fair to both passengers and crew, cannot place Antonio...our favourite Maitre D is Jorge. Still cannot get my head around tea in the Terezza. It cannot have the same ambience, although I can understand the need for more tables for two. There are times that for whatever reason either at a meal or in the bar that you do not want to socialise. Does this also mean that they no longer serve 'extra' dishes at the outside bar grill at lunch times and have done away with the international dishes created at lunch time and scattered round the ship on world cruises or extra meal events such as British pub grub in the bar for lunch!. The always available menu I like, when. I fancy something plain such as the pork chop. Nevertheless your comments have created the anticipation for yet another enjoyable Silverseas experience and all their dedicated staff that make Silverseas

Jorge was the maître d' on our first Wind cruise two years ago and was fantastic. We had Antonio, supposedly one of the more senior maître d's with Silversea, for our back-to-back cruises this past May and he was beyond fantastic. Thoroughly enjoyed him and he took excellent, excellent care of us.

Hello Bean Jar.

Arrived in Sardinia today another hot, sunny day. We said hello to the bar tender and his wife and you are correct she is full of life. We also made ourselves known to Ace. We remember him from Whisper some years back. You are correct Wind is looking very good, and Antonio is top man.

Boat is full and also for the next cruise. previouse cruise to Barcelona was a charter full of Chinese

Thank you my Lord,

Is Colin Brown back on board? He disembarked when we did but I think it was only for a temporary break. Please say Hi to him as well - just mention the answer to his trivia question about Scarlet Fever and watch him start to laugh

Enjoy your cruise

Ace is quite funny and took wonder care of us. His wife is Myrynda who was the bartender at the Pool Bagpr for our cruise. We miss them both.

The occasional afternoon tea inside or outside the Panorama lounge with the pianist for background music has always been a highlight for us.

La Terrazza presumably without the pianist is a no no for us.We will take out the positive of a slightly reduced waistline. Does this mean the alternative breakfast in the Panorama lounge is not now available?

The Panorama Lounge is now dead without the afternoon tea being served in there. I feel sorry for the poor staff who still have to man the bar. Early breakfast still available, but plates of fruit, etc wrapped.

the staff have new blue uniforms, very smart. Dinner the waiters now order electronically. Yes Colin Brown is the CD. Will be at trivia as i write. Gone cloudy outside but 92F

I'll have to say the Panorama Lounge was close on to empty 90% if the time day or night of our 18 days on the Wind in May. I guess it's the makeup of the passengers for a given cruise. Two years ago it was packed or at least moderately busy at night. Of course one of the factors may have been that two years ago it was a 14-day cruise with two gentleman hosts and somewhere around seven to eight solo ladies. They made the Panorama their nightly hangout and that seemed to attract an additional crowd as the band was always playing rather than sitting in their hands like they did during much of our recent back-to-back cruises with no hosts.
