Really stupid scissors question

Recommended Posts

Our previous three cruises we packed according to the "take scissors, duct tape, labels, post-it notes, and hi-liters" suggestions and they ALL came in handy. (Those of you who think I am psychotically organized I invite to see my office which looks like a bomb went off within...one of my colleagues was literally stepping over piles to see my computer yesterday and students regularly stand in the door while I clear a chair).

In any case, I've never had the scissors confiscated. Are they a forbidden item? If so, I'm sure I can make do without (nail clippers are easily co-opted if need be or the concierge's scissors can be borrowed). Just want to avoid a trip to the "naughty room" for something REALLY crazy.

Thanks!!!!!!

My friend had scissors in her carry-on in Miami in Nov and they were taken out of her bag at x-ray. She had a broken toe and had to change the bandage daily and they said okay and let them through. So I'd leave them in my carry on and give them some reason why you really need them. (They were pretty small. Not tiny manicure ones, but not normal-sized ones either.)

I NEED scissors and I bring them on every single trip...no problems. Hubby uses them on his beard, I trim hanging threads, clip price tags (when we buy something)...

Of course, we're not talking about pruning shears...we're talking a 1 1/2 inch pair...

Scissors are now on the list of contraband on RCI's website. Don't count on Guest Relations having any sharp scissors to cut anything either! I was wearing Flector patches on my knee last cruise and the scissors at GR wouldn't cut hot butter!

It seems to be a hit/miss thing with scissors. Last week on Serenade, I had a small pair (2.5" blades) in my checked bag and no problem. My mom had a pair of shears that she had in her bag and no problem. There was a woman at our dinner table who had her cuticle scissors confiscated.

I have a pair of folding scissors. When folded they look like a big figure eight...the blades are tucked inside.

I've never had a problem with them. We 'lock' our luggage with plastic cable ties and I put the scissors in an outside pocket to cut the ties.

And most of the time we travel only with carry ons....so far so good

It depends o whether they find the objects and on how strict the security guard is. On our last cruise, they took away a small knife I take to peel apples (they gave it back on the last day) but allowed small nail scissors.

As some posted, scissors are definitely on the prohibited item list. We neglected to note that a couple of weeks ago boarding the VOS and my wife's (very small) sewing scissors and those belonging to 2-3 others in line near us, had them confiscated from our carry on. If you are determined to ignore the RCCL rules (and we were told specifically this was not a TSA rule, but a more stringent RCCL rule), I am sure you would have more success if they were placed in checked luggage. Not everyone has them recognized and confiscated from carry on either, but the day we went through they were enforcing pretty vigorously.

We also secure the locks of our checked luggage with plastic cable ties (small colored ones available at Home Depot, etc.). We use nail clippers to cut them. Nail clippers, I believe are okay in carry-on's as I've been doing this for several years and have never had them taken away. I do pack a small pair of regular scissors in my checked luggage and it's never been questioned.

What is the rational for "no scissors"...when you could take a steak knife from the dining room and do ALOT of damage with it? Stupid rules....

I'll still bring my scissors!

I agree! I would think they would have "bigger fish to fry"

My husband was summarily escorted to the "naughty table" in Fort Lauderdale before our last cruise on Enchantment of the Seas. His scissors were confiscated right after we went through the X-ray machines at the port.

We were told that RCI does not allow scissors, even though Hubby had brought those same scissors on twenty previous cruises. After our cruise, Hubby picked up his dangerous scissors at a desk in the port where contraband and confiscated items were kept.

Hubby and I both puzzled over this rule because if he had wanted to do some serious cutting damage on the ship, he easily could have snagged some knives in the Windjammer or MDR. Go figure.

Yes, it's like the "no irons allowed" rule. Can't bring an iron on the ship because it's a fire hazard. Cigarettes? Matches? Lighters? Cigars? Tobacco pipes? "Welcome aboard! Let me get an ash tray for you sir!"

But and iron is a fire hazard?

Their ship = their rules.

They just don't make sense sometimes.

You would think that would be the case but on our Jan 17th sailing on AOS I got a call in our stateroom from security to go back to where we handed in our luggage which meant leaving the ship and going all the way to the luggage handling section. On the scanner they detected a pair of scissors in my husbands first aid kit. They had me open up the case and they inspected the scissors and deemed them ok to go on board. That was 30 minutes of my life I will never get back.

You just ruined my theory. I was noticing that those of us who posted that our scissors weren't confiscated had them in checked bags, but the ones taken were in carry-ons. I thought maybe RC was more concerned about carry-on scissors than checked scissors for unknown reasons. I guess they don't like some checked scissors either.

I need scissors for my knitting and I'm bringing them! I have a pair of fiskar's kids safety point (blunt tip) scissors. They actually are incredibly sharp in the blade, but can't stab you. I can see them not wanting dressmaking shears (which can kill), but I can't imagine them making me survive 2 full weeks in the middle of the ocean without my kids blunt scissors.

I don't know, you might be able to gnaw away at someone's finger with those horribly, dangerous scissors!! Just tell them if they made you go two weeks without them, YOU would be more dangerous than any scissors you could bring! haha. :D
