Mr Sanchos vs Nachi Cocom: People Who Have Been There Recently.. Pros & Cons of both

*I searched and could only find a very old, outdated thread on this topic*

We went to Nachi Cocom several years ago and they had more to do back then, from what I understand (Jet Skis, etc..)? I have heard that they have done away with some of those activities?

I loved that we had Cabanas over our lounge chairs (for sun protection)

We are going to have some young people with us and we want to make sure there is plenty of fun stuff to do..so we are considering Mr Sanchos.

*My only fear is that we won't have a Cabana or Umbrella over our lounge chairs (I am very fair skinned and need some shade for at least part of the time).

For those who have been to both places lately:

Can you weigh in on whether there is a way to lounge in some shade?

Can you let me know what activities were available... are there a lot more at Mr Sanchos (vs Nachi Cocom), etc..?

Thank you!

I was at Mr. Sanchos last year. If you're on the AI side, you'll be assigned a table with chairs and an umbrella or palapa over it. The lounge chairs themselves are in the sun; the chairs in cover are chairs you sit upright in. They do have the romance package where you are guaranteed a bed cabana. If not all the cabanas are taken by reserved romance packages, they're available first-come, first-served. The non-AI side also has tables and upright chairs with umbrellas.

For activities, you could rent jet-skis, there was a snorkel excursion where they took you out in a boat to a snorkel site, and they have the inflatable water toys to climb on ($12 extra fee for a wristband for those, I think.) Kayaks are included with the AI package, you just have to pay a $5 deposit which you get back when you return the kayak and paddles.

I was at Nachi Cocum March 2016 and I was drugged. I am a middle aged female and had a reservation for just myself but had taken a taxi over with three other people. I had a pina colada & some guac (never even got to the other food) and within 10 minutes it was apparent what had happened. Fortunately I was able to immediately get a taxi back to the ship (Celebrity Constellation) although I was very much struggling. I made myself vomit and pieces of pills were in the guac. I had not eaten anything but a danish earlier, It took about 24 hours before I returned to normal. It was likely Xanax that had been crushed (I say this with confidence as I have knowledge of Rx meds because of my job). Since that time I have found dozens of people who have had similar things occur in Cancun & Cozumel at different day resorts and hotels and bars. My advice is to take your water off the ship with you along with a protein bar or some granola and do not eat off the ship. I was one of the lucky ones.

You were Drugged at Nachi Cocom? This is horrifying.

What was the outcome of your case? I'm assuming this was reported to the authorities?

Is there a link to a thread/discussion here on Cruise Critic of your experience when it happened?

Nachi Cocom is such a popular attraction in Cozumel and has been posted about here on Cruise Critic for years..

it seems like this incident/case would be huge news.

Please elaborate on the details of what was done about it... so that we can all be informed..thanks.

Oh - I just checked and CC does not have private messaging. My name is on my email so I do not want to post that here. Suffice it to say no authorities in Cozumel were notified as it was all I cd do to get back to the ship. I certainly told other people on my ship when I returned but it was not the fault of Celebrity. And I told other professional friends at home when I returned. I have not read about this happening at this day resort before The doc on the ship advised me to see my doctor when I returned which I did. On Trip Advisor you can read about what happened at Playa San Francisco, another day resort. There are also a number of other people who believe they were somehow drugged at Carlos & Charlies, a bar there. I cannot say who did it, but it certainly happened to me. It could happen anywhere but seems to happen with more frequency in the Cancun & Cozumel area....at least people are reporting it more. It was at the beginning of my cruise & I was determined to not let this mess it up. Number one I felt stupid for eating there as I never do that. Number two, it made me feel vulnerable which as an independent strong female, was something I did not want to feel. It certainly has not kept me from cruising but you will see I cruise Southern Caribbean only now and tend not to go to Mexico. And my BF is with me. I wd go back to Cozumel but I wd make it a pool day on ship. Just not worth the risk.

That must have been a horrible experience! I'm wondering, like another poster, if you reviewed it anywhere on CC or TripAdvisor? Did the ship's doctor encourage you to report it all?? Does the ship have to report such an incident? I just checked TA and all the Nachi reviews are extremely positive. It would be helpful to others who may have a concern about this issue, to be able to see your review on these websites - allowing them to make their own informed decisions.

I am also very interested in this. As I, too, am seeing mostly positive reviews...

I am well aware of, and fully believe, all of the stories about date-rape type drugs and tainted alcohol at some Cancun resorts.

There are numerous reports, some like yours, are first-hand. And some fit the description of one or the other type of incident.

If this is also an issue at the beach clubs on Coz, we might just stay on the ship. : (

Wow.

I will be with my husband... who is very vigilant.

As horrible as this thought sounds, I wonder if being an unescorted female made you a victim in a somewhat rare occurance.

Been to both, and I prefer Nachi Cocom, this year they added several more palapas further along and down the shore line so more can be ocean front as well as more servers to handle the new improvements, and I've always felt the drinks we're poured with better quality "stuff" then at Mr Sancho's

I remember the first time I saw a post about someone being drugged at one of the day resorts. Of course I didn't want to believe it, and I tend to be anti "fear-mongering", so I assumed they just drank too much. But recently there was a similar thread on the DIS (Disney forums). It's hit mainstream news.

Before you doubt this poster, just do a few google searches.

Must have been so scary :(

Not sure I could convince the other 5 people in our group that this is a concern.

I actually did mean to follow up on this thread and just forgot:

I did Nachi Cocum solo (female) last year and I was fine. (I had a laptop with me and I was using it in plain sight, so theoretically would have been a good theft victim. :/)

It was nice enough, and very laid back. I didn't feel unsafe--it was mostly pax from my own cruise. It seemed like it would be a boring place for kids though.

Also, the fact that the drugging allegations this summer hit mainstream media makes me think resorts would be extra cautious in the near future. (Somehow I suspect it's more a matter of shady individual employees than a higher-level scam, but who knows.)

In short ... while I've now read enough of these stories to think "where there's smoke there's fire", at least for Cancun, I don't actually think people are in danger at two of the biggest Coz resorts, at least not now.

We've been to Nachi 6 times and will be back next month. Never had any issues with the food. My wife has celiac's and they've even accommodated her allergy great. The poor woman who got sick last year posted:

Heads up on Nachi. I was there last Tuesday from Celebrity Constellation. I had one pina colada and the guacamole. Within about 30 minutes I began to feel rather queasy. Then I became nauseated and quickly left. I barely got back to the ship before I became violently ill. This lasted about two hours. Once the food / drink came back up, I was fine. Clearly, if u go, I would not eat or drink. I spoke to one other person that was there that day from my ship and the same thing happened to her and her family. It was not noro as we were fine once we got the food out our tummies. So a big word of warning!!

Bit of an association fallacy to now believe something different because of the alcohol problem that happened on the mainland.

Yep, that would put a different spin on things for sure. Xanax doesn't make you "violently ill" and in her other version of the story she *made* herself throw up.

Thanks for the catch.

Yeah I thought it was odd that Xanax would cause someone to be instantly sick. And if you saw a pill in what she vomited up, wouldn't she want to know what it was for sure? I don't take Xanax (although sometimes I feel like I could justify it), but how many people could accurately identify a piece of a pill in vomit?

I would hope that if these events are actually happening, people are reporting it (even after they get back home). I don't think I could have an experience like that and not say anything to anybody - especially given that Nachi is SO popular among tourists.

I'm not saying something didn't make her sick but somethings keep bothering me about her story. First she violently I'll then she made herself vomit.... Also she saw the ships doctor and it wasn't reported? Why not report it on the ship to someone to make sure it didn't happen to someone else if Nachi was the reason. Maked one wonder if the doctor thought it was something else like food poisoning from the guacamole or something else she ate? Or we've all had those horrible tummy issues that come out of nowhere make you miserable for a short while then your fine. Again I'm sorry she was I'll but I'm not sure the two are related

We were at Mr Sanchos at the beginning of Feb this year and had a blast. As previously mentioned, lounge chairs are in the sun but we were able to move them around closer to our cabana to stay in the shade. Cabana and loungers were next to one another.

We used the jet ski's, went parasailing and quad biking. There was also snorkeling and the water toys as well. I do remember they were selling lots of different activities on the day, so not sure what else there was.

Felt perfectly safe, was easy to get there and back (shared a taxi with another couple off our ship). Food and drinks were fantastic, waiter attentive. Would recommend.

Hi everyone! Is there any music being played at Mr. Sanchos? I love when it's quiet but it's always nice having some music playing in the background. And it seems like that's not the case at Nachi Cocom. Which is fine, I can always play my Spotify softly if anything. But just curious!
